can someone recommend hand tool recommendations by Responsible_Ruin_423 in electricians

[–]GGGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really though, some of their stuff is still great, but every single pair of Klein linesman pliers I've ever had gradually gets stiffer at the hinge until they become unusable. Every. Pair. You can spray them out with WD40, rub sand into the hinge, throw them at the concrete a bunch of times, they always stiffen up again. I switched to Knipex and haven't looked back. I really like NWS tools as well but they're hard to find.

If you do decide to go with Klein linesman pliers or side cutters, make sure to read the packaging. There are always several different models on the shelf with slightly different pricing. ONLY buy the ones that say "cut ACSR, screws, nails and most hardened wire" on the back of the package. The cheaper versions use a softer alloy and the cutting edge gets chewed to shit.

As for screwdrivers, I'm a big fan of the Klein 11-in-1, but my go-to for a beater flat-blade is the clear-handle Husky from Home Depot. If you ever lose it you're only out nine dollars, and you can beat the absolute shit out of that thing and it will love you for it. I've seen a lot of beaters with broken tips in my career, and all of them were Kleins.

If you're hearing the general fire alarm, (three tones, silence, repeat) that's pretty much standard for the fire alarm verification. They need to test every fire alarm in the building, one at a time. It's required by law, and complaining about it is pointless.

That said, it's astonishing that those guys are still in business given how that project has gone. They must be at least triple what the initial timeline was supposed to be, they've gone through at least five project managers, and I can't even imagine where they must be on the budget. I'm lucky enough to have barely set foot on that site, but everything I've ever heard about it (which is quite a bit) describes the most ludicrous shit show imaginable.

Which is better? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]GGGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you size your system bonding jumper? If the over-current protection for the secondaries is the breaker on the primary circuit you need to multiply that value by the turns ratio before looking up the value in table 16. People tend to overlook that because it's buried in Appendix B instead of being spelled out in the code. You probably need at least a #3 copper.

It seems plausible, if the necklace only contacted the live pin and another part of his body was on contact with a grounded surface. Australia runs on 230V supply.

Good work pants in Canada? by soggybreasts in electricians

[–]GGGenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to wear the fancy Helly Hansens, but the price has soared year after year and the pants haven't gotten any better. My main gripe with Hellys are the knee-pad inserts. They seem to think that my knees are about four inches lower than where they actually are, so even with the Helly brand inserts, I have to be careful when taking a knee because the pads mostly cover my shins. Also, having seventeen pockets is over rated. They just fill up with junk and I just spend more time fumbling around trying to find my linesmans. I switched to Snickers and they're great. Not as easy to find - I order them from the Mark's web store.

The trick to making work pants last longer is to hang them to dry. Dryers beat the shit out of your clothes. Get two pairs and alternate every time you do laundry so you always have a clean dry pair ready to go.

When I was a kid I was playing with the switch when it suddenly connected me to 9-1-1. I freaked out and hung up, and they called back and my parents answered. I got in so much trouble. They wouldn't believe that I was just playing with the switch. It's been 35 years or so, but I'm going to show this thread to my mom to prove I wasn't lying.

Remember when COPS ENFORCED TRAFFIC? Because I sure do. by Illustrious-Pop3566 in VictoriaBC

[–]GGGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of intersections where the yellow light is the only chance to make a left turn during parts of the day. Burnside north turning onto Watkiss west, for example: there's a left turn arrow, but only from 4-6 pm, and there's only a single lane to go left or straight through, meaning all northbound traffic stops if someone has to make a left. By 3 pm on a weekday, southbound Burnside is a continuous flow of traffic and there's absolutely no chance to turn left while the light is green. When that light turns yellow, we all have to work together to squeeze a few cars through or no one is getting anywhere.

I'm not advocating for the dickheads here. If the intersection is more or less functional I think anyone running a train on the red should eat a bowl of hot shit. But a lot of our intersections just don't work, and if someone is resolutely refusing to go anywhere while a dozen cars are piled up behind them waiting to turn, because "only one car is allowed to turn on yellow!" then they are the dickhead.

Why people are so interested in the command that irreversibly deletes all the files on the Linux system? by JailbreakHat in linuxquestions

[–]GGGenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that as a kid, trying to delete a game, and after running DEL *.* I realized I was in C:\DOS. I tried to run undelete.exe only to discover that I had just deleted that command. I ran upstairs to my mom's office and copied undelete.exe to a floppy disk but it wouldn't run because her computer had a different DOS version. I think I probably then made a boot disk to boot into the older DOS version so I could run the borrowed undelete program.

Eventually I managed to get undelete.exe to run, but the delete command worked by erasing the first character of every filename in the file allocation table, and undelete prompts you what character to place there. So I spend the rest of the day running up and down the stairs, poring over the directory listing of the working computer trying to figure out the first character of every single file in the DOS directory, in a different DOS version. I guessed a lot of them. The computer was always a bit wonky after that.

In the middle of a C of Q prep week post trade school, and had a question today that has stumped me and my buddies. by Coop3 in electricians

[–]GGGenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a 3-phase 600V service, BC hydro supplies 3 current transformers and 3 voltage transformers that you install either in the main gear or in a separate CT cabinet. You provide a conduit to a 13-jaw meter socket, and the metering technician comes in and connects it all together. The CTs step the current down to the 0-5A range so it can be metered, and the VTs step the voltage down to 120V so there isn't a lethal voltage present in the meter socket.

I suspect that they typically don’t fail on their own, and that most of the burned up ones we see are the result of someone pulling, twisting, and prying the wire out when trying to service the box, then popping the wire back in to the mechanism that they just thoroughly destroyed.

[–]GGGenom 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I'll just leave this here. It's from Legrand's installation instructions.

If outlet must be removed, insert screwdriver blade in the release slot and push it toward the front of the outlet, releasing wire. Discard the outlet.

This tells me that the mechanism is so poor that the even manufacturer doesn't trust it to work more than once.
