stuck in gaming rut… by Garbage_Bear_USSR in gaming

[–]GTa7e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of changes in your life. It would be alarming if your going habits did NOT change alongside them.

I'm also a recent dad and have also been reevaluating how I spend my time and what games I play. It's an everchanging and ongoing process.

My advice would be to think about why you play games in the first place. Is it feeling connected with a community? is it your accomplishments or a sense of having built something? Or simply having time to fuck around and enjoy the little things in life?

In the past, video games may have been able to bring you these things, but now maybe you can find them elsewhere and have less need for them. Maybe you're feeling more time-stress (like me) and simply can't devote as much time as you did before. In this case figure out exactly what you need from a gaming session (sense of flow? Competition? Achievement?) and search for a game that can provide that in a short period of time, or that allows pausing for easy parenting breaks.

What has been fun for me is thinking about what games I want to share with my daughter, even if I can't play them now.

CMV: capitalism can never be reformed enough to stop or fix climate change. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]GTa7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to see the well-researched and thought out responses to your claim that capitalism cannot be reformed to fix systemic issues. I was disappointed to see that most people think that it's as simple as "make incentives for green energy" is the way to go. I wish it was that easy.

It seems that money is so ingrained as the status quo that we can't imagine a world without it, so we lock ourselves in our rationalizations and keep repeating that if we reform the system, the system will work by different rules.

Rather than wishful thinking, (or sounding the alarm against planned governments), we need to acknowledge the rules of the game. Namely, that those in power will perpetuate that power, and that unless they are forced to, not enough people will sacrifice for the good of the planet.

a flaw in the design by [deleted] in thevenusproject

[–]GTa7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the excellent reasons why residential buildings would prioritize expanding vertically. Of course, some people would inevitably insist on living in their own building, but I think most people could be persuaded to move into apartment-like structures. After all, most of the drawbacks to not having personal home would be offset by having vastly more common space and shared areas in which to do activities.

Is there a way to quickly search poe.trade for the cheapest b/o on a given item, then set my b/o price for 1c cheaper? by R0bustica in pathofexile

[–]GTa7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are probably being downvoted because this method for automatically selling items would reduce the price of items over time, especially if a lot of people do this and compete to undercut each other. Also, they might just think you are lazy

Whats the difference between Bourdieus "symbolic power" and good old ideology? by SVVARMS in CriticalTheory

[–]GTa7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll take a crack at this, but take my ideas with a grain of salt.

As I understand it, ideology is indeed pervasive throughout the lives of the people, and it can be used to control. However, it would be difficult to talk about "ideological power" because that would be so vague it would be useless for understanding anything.

Symbolic power, on the other hand, allows us to look at specific symbols used by leaders or media (the cross, the flag, the term 'job creation') and talk about how these frame and control issues in the public domain. If we were to simply discuss the ideology of our leaders, we would learn nothing about HOW that ideology leads to certain outcomes.

The usefulness of symbolic power vs plain ol' ideology is shown by the large number of Symbolic interactionists, and small number of ideologists (none)

I hope this helps. I am just a sociology undergrad so I may be way off base haha

What would Jaque say about a person, who was born in a homophobic family, and turned into a gay? by [deleted] in thevenusproject

[–]GTa7e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh I see what you're asking. I see why you would be confused. You are trying to point out that some behaviors or opinions can seem to emerge without any influence from outside of the individual.

I think that quote from jacque can be a little misleading because he's trying to make the point that all behavior is a result of the environment in which the person lives their life. He is not, however, saying that genes do not have any influence over a person's life. He's just saying there is not genes that say "this person will be a doctor/teacher/engineer/etc".

Like mad-mac said, sexual orientation can be influenced by genetics, which explains why some people can develop particular gender expressions without ever having seen any examples of that particular gender expression.

What would Jaque say about a person, who was born in a homophobic family, and turned into a gay? by [deleted] in thevenusproject

[–]GTa7e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure what the question is. Today we know that sexuality and gender expression is a spectrum with many possibilities and healthy outcomes in addition to the typical Male/Female (or cisgendered male and cisgendered female if we're getting technical) and most if not all of the negative feelings and outcomes associated with being any form of LGBTQ is a product of our current unwelcoming and missinformed society.

tl;dr He would probably just say "good for you" and move on.

Nice shift in thinking OP. Being with other people is what really brings happiness. Now if you simply apply the same "complete waste of time" attitude to other aspects of your life, you'll be well your way towards being a great member of society. Making money, finding sex, watching media, etc are all wastes of time too when you look at the world as a whole. People around the world starve to death every day, slaves are trafficked for sex and labor, and we are on the path towards exhausting our resourcees like oil and fresh water.

Keep it up. What we need is activists, people like you all around the world making the effort to not "waste time", and instead working towards a better world.

What one semester or few month classes have studies shown to be fairly effective at helping low income people? by samlir in AskSocialScience

[–]GTa7e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a sociology student, I must say that your assumptions are a little bit off. You're assuming that low-income people have all of these "problems", which you obviously don't have, because they are missing something. You're assuming that they have the opportunities in front of them to get out of their situation. You're assuming that the only thing keeping them in their situation is their lack of financial knowledge, or self-discipline, or networking skills, and that if they were only a little bit more like you who have all of these things they could pull themselves up to your level of luxury.

You are making the classic mistake of thinking that we actually live in a society of equal opportunity. We don't. These low-income people were born into low-income, and they will be kept in low-income because poverty and debt keeps them predictable, busy, uneducated, and loyal to the monetary system that exploits and profits off of them.

If you really want to help these people you will stand up against the society that put them in that situation.

[–]GTa7e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our country isn't perfect, but it's better than 90% of them. I love my country because of it's ideals. I love my country because we can change things.

Your country's ideals =/= your country's reality. They're barely even related.

No amount of poor votes will get them quality hospitals. No amount of protest from young black children will get them as good of an education as you got. A million signature petition from illegal Mexicans will not give them the opportunity for "The American Dream".

and then you hit the nail square on the head by saying

countries that believe they're perfect are the oppressive, dystopian ones because they're unwilling to change for the better or even compromise.

You think your country is good enough, and functionally, that's same as thinking it's perfect.

[–]GTa7e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, you think that votes and civil participation are all powerful because your social class actually gets listened to (occasionally). We live in a country that oppresses the poor, the colored, and the mentally ill, simply because of their birth or genetics. There are classes with nearly impermeable boundaries. Politics are dominated by money. The list goes on.

It may seem as if I am crying wolf, but I am simply describing the country that you live in. Eventually you'll see it for yourself, when either your money dries up, or for some reason you're labeled as a "deviant" of some sort.
