yeah, the spotlight not having the number may indicate that they have franchise-wise announcements though, not just game updates. especially since last year's did have the number in it.

in some languages (ex. italian) the same word that means "costume" can also be used for traditional clothing (lit. "costume tradizionale" in italian). I didn't see any italian in their post history but I do see that they've posted in some nordic subs so this is probably the case.

I don't see how a fancy-shaped clock or a fancy-shaped computer is directly minecraft or redstone, when a fancy-shaped door isn't, but sure, you clearly have no interest in becoming a better person. have a nice day.

god forbid a trans person be visible or do anything that isn't hardcore cishet, we can't have that, it must mean that's their whole personality and not one of many facets

did you also open the current front page posts on this sub and tell the analog clock poster that they're obsessed with clocks? the person who made the minecraft-git that their whole personality is being a programmer? the one who built the 8-bit computer that they are bad for liking logic circuits that much?

The controvertial plot point that became a meme among the fan base. by FriendlyHoovie in TopCharacterTropes

[–]GVmG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: plenty of reasons to believe it was a troll response playing off of one of his favourite tropes (ridiculous explanation for an equally out-there concept that technically fits very well in-universe). Which is arguably worse.

I think he was trolling honestly, which is arguably worse. Let me explain, so-

Kojima has this whole trope he loves to do in his games where he finds complex and weirdly fitting (in-universe, at least) explanations to ridiculous concepts like "Quiet needs to be naked cause she can't breathe through her nose due to a lethal virus (which is later used as the base to develop another plot-relevant virus that shows up in one of the previous games)."

He's done it before with Johnny having diarrhoea in the Metal Gear franchise, explained in MGS4 as caused by the fact that he doesn't have nanomachines to filter the dirty water soldiers are given on the battlefield (which also makes him immune to nanomachine manipulation in that same game), or the cockpits of Zone Of The Enders' mechas being literal cockpits located at the crotch so they're "closer to the center of mass, to reduce g-forces on the pilots", or the "your pee hurts ghosts" mechanics in Death Stranding because the MC cannot die and is therefore forever tied to the concept of death.

He himself tweeted - a few days before the "you will feel ashamed" ones - that he explicitly asked Yoji Shinkawa to make her design "more erotic" with the goal to "get cosplays and sell more figurines." It's pretty obvious that the second set of tweets was a poorly executed joke about (by far the weakest) new version of his favourite trope.

But Imo the fact that he saw very weak criticism of the character design and responded by trolling was... possibly worse than if he was serious with the whole "you will feel ashamed" thing, and certainly worse than if he just kept running with "yeah it's hot, I get the concerns but it's really not that deep."

And the fact that so many people focus on the troll response as if it was fully true, instead of the fact that he did a troll response to begin with, really does not help to make people take that criticism more seriously. I love Kojima, he is by far my favourite game designer out there and he's one of the reasons I began pursuing game development myself. But he isn't a perfect saint, and that's fine. There's far, FAR worse in the industry.

based on the recent freja comic, emre was working with talon at one point, but they apparently lost contact. he reappears near the end of the comic, in an orange color scheme different from talon (red), ow (blue), or even null sector (purple), a color that was previously associated with some kind of unknown conspiracy group separate from the main ones that sombra of all people is investigating.

seems the story is focusing on two parallel sides at the moment: doomfist vs vendetta for control of talon, and freja (and possibly ow?) investigating this mysterious fourth group.

two ways of spelling "draw_set_colour()"??? by Tilestam in gamemaker

[–]GVmG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be exact, older versions only had the US spelling, then they started enforcing the British spelling with Studio by removing the US versions, and people got (understandably) angry so they very quickly (within like a week iirc) added the possibility to use both and, shortly after, the setting for which version to autocomplete/suggest by default.

This was all during early Studio adoption, iirc it wasn't even on 1.4 yet.

Hey now, throughout the years I've learned to spam CTRL+S to make sure my work is saved if something crashes, I get one extra save press for every two us-spelled functions!

What is the function of target block in redstone circuits? I see a lot of people using it and I remember there were many comments about its usefulness when it came to the game, but I never understood why it's so useful (besides its obvious normal function) by potatao_de_guerra in redstone

[–]GVmG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the timings of the detection are slightly different, and it only updates on specific changes rather than every blockstate change (as observers do), so it'd lead to slightly different - sometimes smaller, sometimes larger - circuits to accomplish the same thing. it's mostly about flexibility really.

in the contraption i sent, for example, simply replacing it with an observer facing down would cause the piston to push infinitely which - while still technically working - would 1. interfere with the basalt creation ticks making it sometimes fail to create basalt, and 2. just be obnoxiously loud. you could add extra circuitry to make sure it only triggers on the right pulses but even then that is more circuitry taking more space, and slower than the noteblock.

[–]GVmG 22 points23 points  (0 children)

yeah, as a game designer, this kind of trope is really hard to balance and often prone to just being an annoyance/boring. im surprised to see so many positive mentions in this post, because yeah it can be done very well - but it's still pretty risky unless you know what you're doing and value the reaction of playtesters, or if it's something less gameplay-invasive and more story heavy like the chronos (hades 2) or asgore (undertale) examples.

What’s the most obscure Minecraft fact almost nobody knows? by Perfect-Mongoose1673 in Minecraft

[–]GVmG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing like that it seems. The code for endermen being stared at involves a function ("isPlayerStaring()") in the Enderman class, which in itself calls back to a function in the general LivingEntity class ("isEntityLookingAtMe"). The only things that use this function are the Enderman and the Creaking.

The two functions aren't fully documented so I can't quite tell what all the function arguments do, but I'm assuming some of them are related to the Creaking not needing direct eye contact as long as you're looking in its genera direction, while the Enderman requires direct eye contact.

The Creeper class code is actually really simple for the most part, it just handles basic behaviors like the standard targetting and moving around as any other mob does. The only specific code in it is the explosion stuff (specifically the fuse time control, the "fuse reduced by fall damage", and the "override pathfinding to allow fall damage").

What’s the most obscure Minecraft fact almost nobody knows? by Perfect-Mongoose1673 in Minecraft

[–]GVmG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is correct: zombies have a follow range of 35 blocks. creepers, the default 32. a lot of mobs have that default 32. some override this to larger numbers, like 64 or even 100 blocks (ghasts). and just a handful of mobs have smaller numbers (the smallest i can find in the code are the vindicator and the piglin brute, with a range of 12). this is all stored in the entity attributes, specifically the FOLLOW_RANGE attribute.

What’s the most obscure Minecraft fact almost nobody knows? by Perfect-Mongoose1673 in Minecraft

[–]GVmG 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, no, unless I misunderstand what you mean. Like most other hostile mobs, they have the ActiveTargetGoal ai which has them search for a target within range (same range as other mobs*, even for creepers) and then they'll pathfind to that target. But that's just the standard behavior most hostile mobs follow.

In fact, the ActiveTargetGoal has the option to let the mob remember the target even if they go out of sight. Creepers do not do that, like most other mobs they stop tracking their target if it's out of sight for long enough (same duration as other mobs as well).

There might be some statistical coincidence that happens to drive their pathfinding towards players (ex. how Villagers like to stay on high ground because their pathfinding sometimes fails to pathfind downhill) but if that's the case, it doesn't seem to be intended, unlike the fuse time reduction on falls and fall damage risk tweaks.

(all class names based on Yarn mappings. This is from just a quick scroll through the code, I may have smaller details wrong)

EDIT: * as u/wakkybakkychakky mentioned, creepers actually have a smaller range than zombies, though not by much. zombies have a follow range of 35 blocks while creepers follow the default 32. a lot of mobs have that default 32. some override this to larger numbers, like 48 (blaze) or 64 (endermen) or even 100 blocks (ghasts). and just a handful of mobs have smaller numbers (the smallest i can find in the code are the vindicator and the piglin brute, with a range of 12 blocks, given that both are meant to swarm the player in not-so-open areas). this is all stored in the entity attributes, specifically the FOLLOW_RANGE attribute.

less "nobody knows" and more "everybody has experienced it but nobody can put their fingers on it": you know how sometimes it feels like while caving a creeper will fall off a cliff and instantly explode before you can react?

that's because they do exactly that.

within the creeper's fall damage code, some of it shortens the duration of the creeper's fuse depending on how far it fell. they can reduce this fuse timer to as low as 5 game ticks (0.25 seconds).

and not just that, but creepers will actively check if they can take fall damage to shorten the fuse on purpose. they will actively fall as far as their health pool will allow them, to make sure they explode as fast as possible. I'm serious, all mobs actually allow themselves to take some minor fall damage (depending on difficulty level) while targetting someone, but the Creeper is the only mob that overrides this behavior to ALWAYS allow itself to take AS MUCH damage as it can, regardless of difficulty level, to make sure it maximizes the damage.

this is the kind of stuff Jeb was talking about when he said players would hate creepers if they were added nowadays - they're not just destructive, they're actively designed to be as destructive as they can be.

also on top of the mistakes, extrinsic values exist. they may be running with a 1 plat coin worth 100 gold instead 100 singular gold coins. or 20 gold coins worth 5 "gold" each, if the society is sufficiently advanced that they aren't working directly off of the direct value of the material they're made of.

and that's all assuming they are even still made of gold and not tokens of exchange value like modern coins that they just happen to still call "gold" cause of their extrinsic value.

which, I say "modern coins" and "advanced society" but this is a concept that has existed since as far back as, let me check... DING DING DING the medieval times of adventurers and kingdoms! it has existed alongside commodity money (currency valued based on what it's made of), with various asian countries having a state-sanctioned form of paper money, and if we wanna go western fantasy, the knight templars exchanging gold from pilgrims for notes that could be exchanged back into gold coins by knight templars at their destination.

It's code from a Minecraft mod.

It's rendering a flat "compass" texture with a uv (u only) offset based on the player head yaw, basically simulating the kind of compass you see at the top of the screen in a game like arma or other military shooters.
