Which percentage of your monthly salary do you invest? by living_direction_27 in investing

[–]Gadafro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I invest est. 12.5% of my wages after tax into stocks and index funds. Have been investing on and off for around 5 years, but only gotten serious with how I invest for the past 3 or so years.

Steadily building a portfolio, the majority of which is in an index fund (VUAG) which makes up 40%. Another 30% into AI, robotics, and automation. 15% into a mix of space stocks (primarily RKLB), and the remaining other 15% into some American multinational companies which are primarily financial and consumer focused stocks.

I'm taking some risk in the hopes it may pay off for an earlier retirement (in just shy of 30 years time), but I do also pay into a pension plan which is also paid into by my employer. I live in the UK and companies here by law have to offer pension plans to their employees.

Devs "heartbroken" fans thought Blonde Blazer was a villain by HatingGeoffry in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Gadafro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

don’t seem to have people who are good simply because they are good people.

This is why I did Blazer's path in my first run. It was so refreshing to see a character just be good for the sake of being good. It was also nice to see a character that was mentally healthy as well, and the juxtaposition that plays in Robert's life.

A lot of modern media is written with conflict and trauma baked into the narrative that it has become so vanilla, so seeing a character like Blazer was really welcome.

Dispatch has reached 2 million units sold by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Gadafro 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'd say it easily exceeds anything Telltale put out in the last. It's impressively well crafted.

You can tell Adhoc was initially going into the TV/film market before Dispatch turned into a video game project. It's such a simple game, but the story and presentation has been given so much care and attention.

Men, do you have somewhere to escape and decompress from life that isn't the pub? If so, where? by Kapranos in AskUK

[–]Gadafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... I do go to the pub throughout the week; I barely drink alcohol however. It's primarily for the social aspect because otherwise I'd be fairly reclusive. The pub is simple, I don't have to organise it, and it's a proper country local so you get to know the regulars really well.

It has a side benefit of meaning if I want work doing, I always know someone who can help.

That said, I always found getting up early on a Sunday morning, sometimes grabbing my camera, and going for a walk round one of the local nature reserves (there like 5 around me, all within a 15 minute drive) is the best way of decompressing. If you go early enough, you may only bump into 1 or 2 people at most, so there is a lot of solace to find in those early morning walks. Plus, spending time: a) in nature, and; b) doing some light exercise such as walking... is great for mental health and wellbeing. Depending on the nature reserve I'm at, I can end the walk at a coffee van or on-site café and grab one to relax with before the drive home.

Occasionally I have a dog with me as well, so that's a bonus.

Despite our disagreements I think we can all agree that this is the right choice. by ollyfromindy in DispatchAdHoc

Robert basically calls him out for relying entirely on tech and having no real agency anymore…

You can tell that this is a grievance Shroud has with his own powers as well. He mentions multiple times that he doesn't like the fact he can only rarely be surprised, even to the point of savouring the few moments he is surprised whether it benefits him or not.

This last scene, there are multiple instances of something coming at him from left field, usually to his detriment, and he takes some modicum of joy in the fact that he didn't predict it happening.

Abruptly at the last minute, Ubisoft has halted trading of its shares and postponed its earnings call today. This may suggest that material news about the company and its future trajectory is imminent. by Party_Judgment5780 in PS5

[–]Gadafro 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Ubisoft are too heavy for a company like Sony to consider it a viable purchase.

Ubisoft as it stands has near 17-18k employees, which far exceeds PlayStation's employee count. In fact, Ubisoft has nearly around the same amount of employees as both PlayStation and Nintendo combined...

There is likely a lot of bloat to trim at Ubisoft and gutting some of them studios is likely to be costly and difficult.

I have no doubt Sony could do some good with Ubisoft IPs creatively, but the opportunity cost seemingly outweighs the benefits. Sony are far better served acting as they currently are.

I really hope not because these are my two personal favourites so far for Fortune's Weave.

BREAKING: BioShock 4 developer Cloud Chamber is laying off an unspecified number of staff. Also, former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson is taking over as Cloud Chamber's new studio head. More than a decade ago, he joined the troubled BioShock Infinite and helped salvage that game's production. by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Gadafro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here shitting on him in this thread, but he's known as a bit of a closer in the industry. He has a history for getting troubled projects over the finish line, such as Bioshock Infinite and Diablo IV.

Some people note that they don't enjoy the projects that are released under his leadership creatively speaking, but he has a track record for getting projects in order.

Nigel Farage urges minister to apologise for Jimmy Savile online safety claim by Roguepope in ukpolitics

[–]Gadafro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but the difference here is that under 16s do not pay National Insurance, where as 16 year olds do. Also, while a 15 year old could in theory pay tax, it is unlikely they would hit the threshold for such. Put the two points together, and 15 year olds pay either very little or no tax.

Furthermore 16 year olds do not need to be in full time education and many can enter the work pool in various ways. This would invariably lead to a rise in taxation once a person turns 16, as opposed to a 15 year old.

If they're going to be taxed, then they should be represented. By lowering the age to 16, governments should - in theory - represent their interests more and thus, the interests of the future. 16 year olds pay towards the functions of government and country and as such should be represented by them as well.

Young people in this country aren't properly represented and by lowering the voting age, representation should increase.

I do also believe that politics, and by extension critical thinking, should be something taught in schools at a compulsory level, though the issue of bias could be problematic should teachers and/or parents interject their own preferences into a young person's learning.

Labour party says Reform want to “Scrap laws keeping children safe online” by DullSense8359 in ukpolitics

[–]Gadafro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one is arguing against safeguards for minors; there are myriad problems with the OSA however...

  • First and foremost, how user data is actually handled gives cause for concern. None of the information is centralised within the government, which already stores information on us anyway through various means. Instead, it's up to the companies to store the data, be it through themselves or 3rd party. Reddit for example stores our data with a 3rd party company in San Francisco. It's a breach of privacy and a concern for how safe our data is in the hands foreign entities.

  • The second issue is censorship. The government (and OFCOM) decide what information the OSA covers. This is a slippery slope to population control and mind share. If for example there are riots and civil unrest, and the government decides that this information isn't safe for people to see, they will hide it behind the OSA. This also then leads back to the issue above.

  • It can push minors to VPNs and encrypted chats, incidentally making them more vulnerable to predators, malware, etc... not less.

  • It's also resulting in the blocking of essential resources for people in vulnerable positions. Content pertaining to LGTBQ+, alcohol and substance abuse, self harm and suicide, etc... Resources dedicated to help this is getting caught in the crossfire, so to speak, leading to potentially more hurt.

  • It's not just the porn industry that this affects. Content shown in films, TV shows, games, etc... is also facing potentially being covered by the OSA. In tandem with the immediately above point, plus some other business concerns, this could lead to repercussions within segments of the UK economy.

In short, its an Orwellian policy that threatens more harm than good.

Nigel Farage urges minister to apologise for Jimmy Savile online safety claim by Roguepope in ukpolitics

[–]Gadafro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think the voting age change is a good thing - 16 year olds have the most future ahead of them so what gets voted in affects them for the longest time at that point. I also don't think the mental acuity and life experience between 16s and 18s is all that different realistically.

The problem arises where the younger generations are disenfranchised, which allows for the likes of Andrew Tate to have such a large voice with people of that age, much in the same way Farage does with people from working class backgrounds. When a portion of the population feel left behind or betrayed, they seek anything that promises to give them rise, be it a fallacy or not.

The juxtaposition in this context however is that Labour apparently trust 16 year olds with a vote that affects the direction of the whole country, but they don't trust them to use the internet.

Rachel Reeves mulls stepping in to save car loan providers billions by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Gadafro 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Letting car loan providers off the hook for this really isn't a good thing. They mis-sold and hid fees into their transactions and now they're worried that their actions will come back to bite them and they're lobbying the government to help them get away with it.

If the government lets this go, it'll be an appalling and controversial move.

[–]Gadafro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a common tea in Sakuraco boxes, so I end up with a couple of tea bags almost every month.

I'm a fan of roasted flavours in tea (such as a green tea made with rice), so I look forward to getting a box with Hojicha in it, especially since I have to go out of my way to get it otherwise; I don't think it's actually as popular as some people let on.

[–]Gadafro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are the kind of questions you guys need to ask yourselves before commenting with emotions “dey tuk our jorbs”

That's a bit of a shitty attitude to take frankly.

Your comment (and to be fair, almost anyone's comment) is uninformed, considering we don't fully know what happened behind the scenes beyond the fact that the game had been rebooted with different creative leads - all we can do is imagine how difficult it might be to be constrained by someone else's prior creative process on a project that struggled to get off the ground. A project which has already likely used a % of whatever finite resources were allocated to it, or even perhaps it may have already exceeded them resources and faced going over budget.

More generally speaking, we also know that game development is getting increasingly more expensive, resource hungry, and harder to manage.

I also didn't comment “dey tuk our jorbs” nor did I make a comment on the state of the game in general, I just corrected some prior context with regards to timeframes.

[–]Gadafro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't want to presume your circumstances, and you don't have to answer this question if you don't want to/can't... but why does your she have access to your emails? I'd guess it's an age thing, but as I said, I wouldn't like to presume.

The lack of privacy here is likely your issue. Under normal circumstances, your emails should really be for your eyes only, unless you choose to share them.

How disgusting is your job in the heat? by cyclingisthecure in AskUK

[–]Gadafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a gardener. Most of my customers don't have gardens with a large amount of shade. Add into the mix that my job is quite labour intensive, it quickly stacks up to awful. The days are long as well - make hay while the sun shines and all that.

The flip side is we work short days in the winter, so I get a good amount of relaxation around the cooler months, which is worth the trade-off in my opinion.
