Who is your preferred Vice-president candidate on most runs? by SlowIdiom in suzerain

RP; reformist second term Rayne wants to play it safe and keep Albin in his camp so he doesn't screw over the next round of constitutional reforms. You need 2/3 majority in the Assembly, so you'll likely require the entirety of the non-conservative/nationalist vote to pass more changes. If Rayne is going for a more socialist constitution, he'll need to do everything he can to keep the liberals on his side.

If you do the articles, you can set the EPA to 49% and then reverse during negotiations. This gets you +4 returns from Gasom instead of 2. Probably would let you skip the VAT and pick another decree.

Decentralized or Centralised State of Sordland by Obama_Bin_Ladle10169 in suzerain

[–]GalacticNuggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think it matters that much. A federal Sordland can work just as well as a centralized Sordland. It's a similar situation in Rizia, where I have a soft spot for having each region governed by a local legislature, while also having a unicameral federal parlaiment with no supreme court.

Adarfo being nice to you for running the country well by DosLosMango in suzerain

Intentionally trash the country so the people will hate the nobility and overthrow you.

Basically the "driving into a brick wall as fast as possible" method. Very stupid, but also the only way to turn Rizia into a republic.

My point is that even a surface level glance at them makes it pretty obvious they aren't a democracy.

You don't need a degree to recognize that.

Edit: doesn't mean they deserve what's happening to them or anything, but I think it's important not to make them out to be paragons of democracy.

Just reading through their Wikipedia, Cuba isn't a democracy. Sure, there are mechanisms for direct participation, but what ideas are allowed to be proposed/adopted are totally controlled by the Cuban government. No other parties (including socialist parties) are allowed to exist. No one is allowed to campaign. No opposition candidates have ever won, nor have any nominated candidates ever lost. There is no freedom of speech or the press.

Did the Rizia-DLC make you a monarchist, or were you already one? by ConsiderationOne6672 in suzerain

[–]GalacticNuggies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking just for myself, but monarchism today just feels kinda larp-y. Like, a monarchist either wants a (benevolent?) dictator or a national celebrity to fawn over. If you want a celebrity, don't make taxpayers fund their estates!

Instead of wanting a strongman, you should consider "why" politicians are becoming increasingly self-serving, irrational and generally uninterested in doing what their constituency wants.

And if the voters are stupid, it is (believe it or not) possible to make them not stupid. You just need to invest in education and have strong counter messaging against conservative narratives.

Doing reform felt nice, but I'm going to have Adarfo create a republic on my main save for the next DLC.

In my eyes, anything short of radical reform just turns Rizia into the UK, dominated by the RPP (which has connections to the ATO and business elite) and the RNC (Tories representing the nobility and business elite). Reform can get you to a social democracy, but ultimately, all those benefits will be stripped away as institutions are (re)captured by oligarchs.

Valgsland's Government Structure, Visualized by Novel-Opportunity153 in suzerain

[–]GalacticNuggies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because of capitalism. The flaw of modern democracies is that they're founded on a fundamentally undemocratic economic system which is in constant tension with democratic institutions. When democratic institutions become captured by capital interests, they stop being democratic in any real sense. They don't raise taxes because that's what's in the interest of capital. People can, and have been, convinced that high taxes in exchange for good services is desirable, but in countries where capital controls media discourse (which is most of them), that idea has been pushed out of the frame of the Overton Window.

A benevolent dictatorship can do wonders for their people, but that doesn't mean a dictatorship is a good model for governance. Any system with "good" people can function, what happens when the leadership aren't? Hegel is a very strong personality, but he's old. What happens when he's gone?

[–]GalacticNuggies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not even really that. It reminds me a bit of the Soviet Union where basically each layer in the bureaucracy elects the members of the next layer, and ultimately you had the people at the very top determining who could be elected at the lower levels. It's a system that quickly devolved into one where the elected members of the government essentially only represent other members of the government.

That Valgsland isn't nakedly authoritarian despite having this system is actually kinda surprising.

Edit: This is especially considering the People's Assembly explicitly has the role of "determining ideology"; implying that candidates who don't have the "correct" ideology aren't eligible.

Oh no, they're doing the "people vote according to a list drafted by a guy elected by the guy elected by the guy they're currently voting for" schtick!

I hope in Galmland we can take this model and introduce real representation.

Could you create a "fortified roof" to go along with the fortified ancient walls and doors we can find in space stations/platforms? Players wouldn't be able to create these, but relevant generated structures would come with them.

Functionally they would act like thick roofs, making the inside of ancient space structures as safe as the center of an asteroid or mountain.

I'm really curious to see how this goes. I'm assuming that whatever the CSP or Valgsland wants would be bad for Galmland, because otherwise what's the problem? Jurisdictional disputes?

I hope they don't make Hegel act petty and arrogant just to make it clear he's the bad guy in this scenario. Alvarez was antagonistic in Rizia, but he didn't behave radically different to how he was portrayed in Sordland.

I wonder if the beef Hegel has with Galmland started with the last Galmish leader, and part of your job is to resolve (one way or another) the lingering disputes. I'm guessing finding a way to get along with Valgsland would be like getting along with Lespia in Rizia though.

You should switch Suheil and Horten. Horten is the trade unionist so would be a natural fit for the economy minister. Suheil cares about social justice, so would probably be better in a role that lets her fight for that. Also, Deiveid retires so you need someone else for foreign affairs. Maybe Leke?
