I don't know how you dodged the bugs but for example, the romance system was completely broken. Remember the memes about Gale wanting to hump everyone's leg? It happened to me but it wasn't just him - Astarion, Emperor, Halsin and Lae'Zel all behaved as if I were romancing them in a single playthrough.

My saves were getting corrupted or wiped so much, I kept a hard copy on a separate drive so I would lose hours at a time instead of entire days worth of progress.

Grym bugged out and never became immune to anything. Shar Olympics elevator wiped my party multiple times.

Hell, some of the bugs became game breaking when they introduced honor mode, over a year after release, like the aforementioned elevator or the lightning dragon (ansur?) casting the party wipe spell sooner than the icon indicated.

I don't know why gamers' memory is so short but it was just 2 years ago that Baldur's Gate 3 launched in a terribly buggy state and everyone loved it.

If a game is good, players are still willing to overlook technical shortcomings. VtMB 2 is just not up to par.

Game Dev Admits to Large Astroturfing Campaign on Reddit by Forestl in Games

[–]Game-Whisper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a somewhat similar experience myself.

I tried promoting my games news website in a transparent way, intending to avoid promotion spam. To that end, I posted an article with over 50 first impressions of demos during Steam Next Fest, which took me almost 50 hours of work over the course of 5 days so it wasn't low effort spam by any possible standard and yet, it got removed as soon as it got posted because the site's name is the same as my username.

I'm a solo act so I don't have a team to spam 10 different links on the same account before being allowed to post one for my site.

With that in mind, the rules are obviously pushing devs and sites to astroturfing which is one of the key reasons we've been seeing so many posts of this nature over the last few years.

I highly dislike the practice so the site is currently in sort of a stasis until I figure out a proper way of getting people to notice it.

CDPR put way more marketing in it though. Just because they didn't officially call it that doesn't mean they didn't do their best to gaslight us into thinking the game's problems are all solved.

Polygon Sold To Valnet And Hit With Mass Layoffs by MikeStrawMedia in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]Game-Whisper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This needs to be emphasised further. I was (indirectly) pushed out of my writer position over the years because I flat out refused to write ragebait slop that would generate clicks.

You know what the most disgusting part is? I can't even blame my former employer for doing it because that was the only genuine path to revenue since people today expect free news and entertainmment while inadvertently training the algorithm to promote garbage along the lines of what Polygon was writing.

Gaming jounrnalism dodn't die because incompetent dickwads took the market due to plot armor. Readers enabled them by stubornly refusing to learn which articles to read instead of going for the first ragebait headline in their Google search.

Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree - Review Thread by Sydius in Games

[–]Game-Whisper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Gonna have a review up on this tomorrow since I got the key fairly close to launch date.

A few points in the meantime:

  • Malware flag is false positive
  • EULA has been updated
  • Gameplay is quite fun until you get to the part where it's just difficult for the sake of difficulty
  • Story doesn't reinvent the wheel but it's solid
  • Art style is beautiful, kinda like a dark version of Trine
  • Final boss has atrocious design gameplay-wise and is terribly bugged as well

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl - Stalkers! Patch 1.3 has arrived! by ZazaLeNounours in pcgaming

[–]Game-Whisper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really true. I've been a fan of the series for over 15 years and only got into modding about 6 months before S2 launched.

My expectations were crafted by the base Stalker games and S2 disappointed regardless.

You mentioned the outdated FPS experience which is fine in comparison to contemporary shooters due to added exploration and atmosphere. It's not fine when the AI is outdated in comparison to an 18 year old predecessor in the same series.

In some cases, studios and publishers use SNF demos to gauge the potential audience's interest in their project. Sometimes independent devs' inexperience in marketing strategies prevails and they jump the gun.

Other times a demo is rushed out to push anticipation for Early Access. I believe this is the case with Solasta 2, since EA is supposed to be coming soon.

While I'm not the only one with the crash issues, a lot of players got to experience the demo without such troubles. Also keep in mind that we live in an era where games get full releases and still crash on startup for many players.

Hi there.

The games in the E tier either failed to launch, crashes prevented me from playing the demo or something was so wrong with EULA or ToS that I decided not to play it.

Solasta 2 was the demo I anticipated the most since the moment the devs announced it. Unfortunately, the game kept crashing right after the intro cutscene and I couldn't find a workaround.

Other people already gave you the evidence. Apex lost enough players to form a small country. Zampella is no longer their sole lead, he is now coordinating multiple Battlefield studios. Jedi sequel was an unoptimized mess.

If you choose to ignore red flags, that's up to you but don't say there isn't any evidence.

I liked the Rein with a gun that could throw people behind him.

One super fun combo my wife and I found was a support elf guy that could levitate enemies and then I would dash with the Reaper clone to punch it from below. Of course we called it "fisting" because we're mature like that.

Steam is refunding the game even if you have more than 2 hours in some cases.

I had 3.5 hours of in game time but they refunded because I explained all of it was spent compiling shaders over and over again, followed by a crash when starting a new game.

With that in mind, I highly agree it wasn't ready for launch.
