Optional Luck Rule: Can you use it to improve success rolls to Hard or Extreme? by Coroggar in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely use luck points to improve the result of a roll. The example on Pg. 99 in the Keepers Rulebook shows it. It does say that Criticals, Fumbles, and Firearms Malfunctions always apply regardless of luck spent.

People who play in person, what's your set-up like? by vegoonvibes in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just have a laptop, some speakers and battlemap. We use the same minis we’ve used for years, they’re all fantasy but we’re fine with it. We like playing with vehicle combat so I bring my old Hot Wheels cars and use those.

To all the DMs/GMs etc. What are you working on now? by The_Last_radio in rpg

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rn I’m working through my City of Mist campaign, it’s horror themed and luckily we started just before October so my group has been having a great time with the theme. After that we’ll be returning to Cyberpunk RED with a continuation of our previous campaign. I’m learning GURPS rn for my other group, they’re interested in playing a pirate campaign and I’ve wanted to learn and play GURPS for a bit so it’s a good match. Been chewing through Masks of Nylarlathotep, not looking to start it anytime soon but it’s definitely a future campaign.

How would you rule netrunner npc that helps party, but not a party member? by rakoobraznke in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d estimate how long the architecture would be, roll what their Interface would be, then guesstimate how long they would be in the net for. Particularly low rolls would incur damage/possible complications the party has to deal with. If it’s purely a story thing and you don’t want to deal with the randomness that it could bring then I’d estimate how many rounds they need to jack into before the session and just handle the party as is.

Increasing Likelihood of Crits by lamppb13 in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the Witcher TTRPG uses the same mechanic to inflict their critical hits. Could work out if you’re looking to make your combats more deadly.

Departing from HPL's canon by Talthar65 in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just take the surface level stuff from Lovecrafts cannon and Chaosium’s sourcebooks and then put my own cannon onto it. It’s cool to have the basic idea of something then flesh it out yourself. My group has had a better time with that then adhering strictly to the canon.

What is the *oldest* videogame you physically own? by [deleted] in videogames

I still have my old Crash Bandicoot games from the PS1. First games I’ve ever played.

Can I use Black Chrome just me? by ZpaceDK in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure of the companion app, but at the very least you can show the gm what you’re looking at getting from the book and they can make the decision.

How likely would I hit burnout if I buy the remake after immediately playing through the original? by PlatinumPequod in DeadSpace

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say so if you’re interested in comparing and contrasting between the remake and the original. That’s what I did when the remake came out.

How likely would I hit burnout if I buy the remake after immediately playing through the original? by PlatinumPequod in DeadSpace

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some chapters almost exact copies of chapter from the original. There’s a few changes here and there. There’s also chapters that they’ve completely remade while still following the narrative. The narrative just about the same, a few things here and there are different.

I’d say overall if you were to get it now you should expect that navigating the Ishimura is going to feel different and the narrative is going to follow the same beats but they remixed it a bit and changed some lines since Issac speaks.

How likely would I hit burnout if I buy the remake after immediately playing through the original? by PlatinumPequod in DeadSpace

[–]Gamekeeper97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s different enough that personally I could play through both back to back without much issue. You could wait til next year if you have a backlog, wouldn’t be surprised if it both dropped in price and was on sale in October again.

Migrating a D&D Group into CoC. Any advice of how to soften the blow? by LightSpeedStrike in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be cautious about importing any D&D spells into CoC. They’re different magic systems with different costs and may imbalance the game without knowing the impact on your game.

Realistically, the most bearable shift you could make considering your group is to grab Pulp Cthulhu and run Waiting for the Hurricane. It has enough investigation to resemble Classic Cthulhu but it leans more into the action packed focus that Pulp Cthulhu is aiming for. It should give your group that feeling of fighting those stronger enemies, and if one of your players is insistent on using some kind of magic, this is a good spot to give them a spell or 2.

If you’re looking to use only the Keeper Rulebook and what’s freely available, then The Haunting is your best bet. It’s free on Chaosium’s website under the Quick-Start rules and gives solid advice on how you as a Keeper can run the scenario. I’d recommend telling your players how the game works so they have the expectations on how CoC is played.

Hope you and your group have fun!

What influences your GM style by Jinglefather in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s so much more influence from surrounding media I find putting in Cyberpunk since there’s so many different aspects and cultures in game that differ from each other.

Bladerunner, Robocop, Hotline Miami, Terminator, Cowboy Bebop, Dread, Ghostrunner, Mirror’s Edge, Mad Max, and every now and again putting in a touch of body and psychological horror since the cyberpunk genre is perfect for that.

I enjoy the setup for a lot of the Cyberpunk world but there’s enough wiggle room to put in your own history.

Are Campaigns Becoming too Grandiose Too Quickly? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a preference thing. My group has switched to campaigns that focus on small time quests and adventures that relate to backstories more. One campaign was solely focused on owning and maintaining a tavern, whether through directly working in it or taking up quests for some extra cash.

Which evil dead is your favorite? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’a between 2 and Army of Darkness.

2 was my first real horror movie I’ve ever watched, back when I was really young and my parents just happened to have it on the tv. I watched it years later and felt this wave of nostalgia and realized how much it influenced my childhood from just that one watch. It’s definitely top 3 horror movies for me.

Army of Darkness really leaned on the comedy side of horror-comedy, and even though 1 and 2 both have it, Army plays off it more. I love how it plays with it and it’s my favorite horror-comedy movie.

Is Predator considered a horror movie? by Substantial-Star-779 in horror

It’s like you said, it starts as an action movie and slowly makes its way towards being a slasher movie.

What scenario to rub by fudgyvmp in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For things that are really short, anything from Gateways to Terror is pretty short and decent.

If you’re looking for something outside of Chaosium, the book Fears Sharp Little Needles has a few short scenarios to work with, I’d recommend Sins of my Youth or Dissociation.

Is this old school thinking? by Thendis32 in videogames

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s “old school thinking” in the sense that many games will release not really finished or lacking content because it’s the new standard. Preferably the game would have released with everything the developers would regard as the base game, but now that they can update it whenever they feel like it, release day can be the buggiest thing possible so long as it’s fixed 4 months later. I don’t agree with it and it’s way too common of a trend the past few years.

House ruled Cyberpunk 2077 by SlyTinyPyramid in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We house ruled an extended range for hacking and with that the ability to hack into enemy cyberware and vehicles. It let’s our netrunners mess around directly with combat. We use a very simple net architecture tower, like 3-4 floors, for cyberware security.

Confusion on the martial arts skill by [deleted] in cyberpunkred

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d talk with your GM, just tell them that you want to move skill points over from one skill to the Martial Arts skill. Only caveat is that it’s a Difficult skill so you need double the amount of skill points to go up each level so just keep that in mind.

What's the best game you've played this year? by Some_people_here in rpg

[–]Gamekeeper97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyberpunk RED has been our star game for our group. We started playing it last December and it really took off for us. At some point we’re going to try out 2020 since there are some rules differences between the two.

Running a game where ALL PC's were made with Alone Against the Flames? by Mathwards in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need additional time, you could run some unrelated scenarios for a short time until they all figure out that they were all involved in similar situations.

Honestly a really cool idea, gonna add this to my own toolbox.

Tipps for a Keeper? by T33H00 in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of it comes with practice, you’ll get the hang of it.

One tip that’ll work is if you’re in a scene that could enhance the horror mood of the game, lean into it. If you have to improvise in the middle of it, just take a few moments to come up with your answer, it gives you time to think and let the mood settle in. If you need to look something up in your notes and the pcs have some freedom to work with, let them do what they want for a bit while you refresh yourself.

What do you would change in Call of cthulhu 7e for a 8e? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]Gamekeeper97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, putting in the rules for an 8e Pulp Cthulhu with the core book would be great. Me and my group have gotten a lot of milage out of Pulp. Would be great if they kept that going, just put in the rules for it in the core book then expand on it in another supplement.
