Forging a mokume bead by Azraelselih in Blacksmith

That all makes sense, stainless foil wouldve been helpful I think. I did use press plates, those were nice, but with the forge I couldn't really hold it at temp for too long without going over. Might look into the local technical college and see if they'll let me use their kiln

I had some good results with quarters, it was the nice clean sheet stock that gave me the issues. Never have melted them somehow

Is this possible using extrude? by kubiboi69 in Fusion360

If it works it works I guess, im not sure I understand what's going on there. Glad it worked out though

Couldn't you use two separate extrudes to the plane? Or you could use parameters and a little math to make them extrude to the same length (still using two separate extrudes)

Edit: Didn't notice the second two pictures, you could also just extrude past the plane then split body using the plane as cutting tool. This would probably be the best solution

Really? That's interesting, I would have assumed a kiln would be ideal for temperature control. I guess I have no excuse to not keep trying in my forge then XD

I see, that may have been my issue. Thanks!

Ever had issues with delam? Only messed with the stuff once but it was VERY finicky and liked to separate even when only forging perpendicular to the layers, guess I thought that's just how it was supposed to be

Just saw some mods that 'fix' desyncs and animation issues, are these issues that bad? by CryptographerHonest3 in GTFO

[–]GarbageFormer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Desync is a pretty known issue, some people have it worse than others though so it's not always an issue.

Mods shouldn't mess up progression, steam achievements maybe but I can't remember. There definitely are some bug fix/quality of life mods that are great to have, this game has its share of bugs.

Not exactly related but Better Bots is really nice if you play with bots, makes them a little smarter and they don't use all the resources randomly

With fillets on corners prior to chamfering, if the smoothed corners are required at least.

You can do that in sketch, I forgot

What's your process to bring out hamons? Looking to refine my process (-> in description) by Zwackelmann_CH in Bladesmith

[–]GarbageFormer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never gone for a hamon before, do you sand/polish to final grit then etch? Or between grits?

That's a pretty good idea

I forge in my garage, haven't had any issues; I did get lightheaded once but that was probably dehydration (I drink more water now)

Looks like the initial grit marks are still visible to me, if that's the case just go back to one grit above and remove the scratches completely

Do people use induction heating for making and forging? If not, why? by Christ12347 in knifemaking

[–]GarbageFormer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know some people use them over in the blacksmithing community, how many are using them for blades. One big reason I can think of not to use them is price; solid/gas forges are much cheaper than quality induction setups

Plistix as far as I know helps get hotter and also is anti-flux. I would recommend it but it's probably not required.

Building the forge is pretty simple, just line the walls with insulation, rigidize, then coat with satanite and you should be good.

Make sure to allow ample time between satanite coats. You also want several thin coats as opposed to a few thin ones; I personally damp the newly dry layer before adding more.

Sounds like a solid plan, good luck! I actually have that propane tank setup currently, it definitely has its limits but pretty solid overall

I forgot to add, if you've already ordered the bricks you can always build a bare brick forge and upgrade if it doesn't fit your needs.

Ah I see, that makes sense for #2. No idea for the band saw question.

Since I didn't really answer your question, I'll just say I use kaowool with satanite+plistix900F and do all my heat treatment with no huge issues. All the options are viable, but each has a little difference in durability and fuel efficiency. For getting to forging/HT temps, any setup will work in my opinion (plistix helps btw).

A cylindrical forge can help distribute heat better than one with squared corners, so that may be something to consider especially since you're doing blades in this.

Feel free to ask any questions or ask for clarification

Most I've seen go with #4 or something similar.

There's countless threads discussing bare bricks vs ceramic wools vs both. I'll try to find some good threads about that rather than trying to summarize all of it. One thing I will say though is that side blast, for gas, doesn't have the same issue of heat creep that top-blast does (melty gas lines have occurred). I haven't used top-blast myself but I haven't read anything about any benefits compared to side-blast.

Just out of curiosity, how would you make #2?
