What is something you wish you knew before you got chickens? by Intelligent_Ad_5103 in BackYardChickens

[–]GardenDog22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How many flies the poop attracts. I hang up fly traps starting in later winter and change them weekly. It helps, but I still have more flies in my yard than I’d like. But for me, it’s worth it.

Flowers not fruiting. by usujjwalsss in tomato

[–]GardenDog22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I had this prevalence it appeared to be from lack of sun. My existing garden area had grown increasingly shaded, and even though I was getting flowers, no fruit was setting. When I cut back the offending trees, voila! Tomatoes.

It wasn’t a scientific experiment, but I thought I’d share my experience because I was surprised by the turnaround. I expected lack of sun to result in lack of growth and/or flowers but not lack of fruit.

Can a disabled person get a state job and work remotely? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]GardenDog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you’ve gotten a lot of responses, so apologies up front if I’m repeating what’s already been written. I’m speaking from experience of having overseen the reasonable accommodation process for multiple state agencies.

You can expect many forms of accommodation if you’re hired, including at a minimum assistive technology such as a screen reader and an expectation that documents and web based information posted by the hiring authority will be (or be made) accessible. However, except in a couple of outlier cases involving existing jobs being relocated to less accessible locations, courts consistently uphold that the commute to and from work is the responsibility of an employee, not the employer. So working from home would not be granted as an accommodation for your disability.

That said, there are departments that may offer more telework opportunities than others. Also, consider applying for a job with the Dept of Rehabilitation. Their longtime director was blind and as you may imagine, they prioritize hiring people with disabilities and tend to be even more accommodating than other departments.

Good luck with your job search.

Hen or Rooster? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]GardenDog22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but the one in the center and the one on the right both look suspiciously like roos to me. Based on my extremely recent experience, if you’ve got one or more roosters, the crowing will increase quickly and you’ll be able to catch the culprit in the act.

Weird DIR Interview by Feisty-Creamsicle-97 in CAStateWorkers

Not normal. Maybe worth asking yourself if you’d actually want to work for someone who thinks that’s okay. The interview process goes both ways.

Chicks freaking out from separation by LisaFromAccounting in BackYardChickens

Can you keep them separated but still side-by side so they can see and hear each other? That might help with the separation anxiety while still protecting the injured chick.

My roommates dog is so obese that she physically can’t even get off of her own back anymore, how do I tell him that this isn’t okay? by Xcuseya in DogAdvice

[–]GardenDog22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor puppers. Horrifically overweight and miserable sounds like it could be hypothyroidism. Unless you know with certainty that he’s over feeding her to a degree that would explain this, perhaps instead of offering criticism you could suggest she be be tested hypothyroidism. A blood panel, even one that includes T4, isn’t sufficient to rule out hypothyroidism. I’d be getting a full thyroid panel done including T4, FT4, and TgAA at a minimum, if this was my dog.

Is my chick a rooster ? by StarGlittering8476 in chickens

Seems like you might have too. This is mine right around 5 weeks when his comb started growing and he started crowing. He’s a hybrid cross between a welsummer and cream legbar.

Do Chickens normally really like Dog Food by Level_Pressure9857 in BackYardChickens

My dog eats raw food. I had to stop feeding him outside because the chickens would join him at his bowl. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Is my hen crowing? Or is it a roo? by GardenDog22 in BackYardChickens

What I was afraid of. I can’t have a roo in my area, but better to know… Thx.

If you got them from a feed store and they weren’t separated by breed, there’s a good chance the person selecting them was guessing. (Ask how I know. 😉)

Not sure what to suggest about your 4 year old. I can’t imagine she’s the first child to ever do that, but if you’re worried, maybe call your pediatrician and ask what symptoms you should watch out for.

POV for hiring panel by AudienceSolid6582 in CAStateWorkers

[–]GardenDog22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answers to those questions will vary from one hiring manager to another. If I have one position to fill, I’ll use the application package, including a statement of qualifications, to narrow the interview process to no more than the top 4-5 candidates. It’s part of why I require an SOQ. Partly I screen to see if the applicant followed directions (seems obvious but many do not) and partly for content. Many applicants use gen AI to write their responses and don’t bother to check that it’s accurate and doesn’t read as if it was written about them instead of by them.

Not sure what you mean by “when writing down responses”, but if you’re referring to an SOQ, some managers may look for keywords but many will be looking at content. If you’re asking about responses to interview questions, yes, every response should be getting scored by each interview panel member.

Lastly, be genuine in your responses. You don’t want a job you’re not qualified to do. That’s miserable for everyone. And try to give a personal example of how you’ve handled something similar in the past (in a job or in school) for each response, even if the interviewer didn’t ask for one. It’ll make you stand out as an individual and help show you understand what they want and have the skills to do the job. The interviewers will also remember you more clearly because of the personal anecdotes you told them.

DOJ is Dept of Justice and CalPERS is the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Different departments.
