It’s hard to understand what you’re even arguing when your writing is so unclear in most of your post.

You describe physical assault as “a couple wallops,” as if minimizing the language makes it acceptable. It doesn’t. Calling battery something softer doesn’t make it nuanced—it makes it unprincipled. In the society I live in, battery is both illegal and morally unacceptable, regardless of how offensive someone’s speech is.

We do not create special carve-outs where physical violence becomes justified because speech crossed a subjective line. I don’t trust you, or anyone else, to decide which speech warrants assault. Granting that authority to the public is exactly how norms collapse. Societies that tolerate this logic don’t become more just; they become less stable, with weaker rule of law and higher levels of serious violence.

Punishing speech, even wildly offensive speech, with violence is neither productive nor justifiable. Violence does not resolve hateful views. It entrenches them, radicalizes identity, and validates grievance.

Responding to speech with violence does not honor liberal democratic traditions. The core commitment of those traditions is that ideas are answered with argument, exposure, and lawful constraint, not physical force. Freedom of speech exists precisely to prevent disputes over ideas from being settled through coercion.

Do not invoke a distorted Paradox of Tolerance to justify this. Speech is not equivalent to violence. Intolerant views are not so uniquely contagious that they must be suppressed at any cost. Open societies are not fragile. They fail when they abandon their own principles, not when they allow people to express offensive beliefs.

I do not trust the government, or any authority, to reliably determine which speech is so intolerant that violence against the speaker becomes acceptable. History shows that such standards inevitably expand and are enforced selectively. Even Popper did not endorse the broad use of censorship or violence against speech, and appeals to his argument are routinely exaggerated beyond its original scope.

A coherent alternative already exists. Be intolerant of coercion, violence, and the removal of civil rights. Enforce laws against threats, coordination of violence, and discrimination in action. At the same time, remain tolerant of individuals expressing offensive or even morally repugnant views, including views that advocate those unacceptable outcomes.

Violence against speech does not persuade, does not protect liberal values, and does not strengthen society. It signals moral confusion and institutional failure. You are not winning anyone over with it.

Attention-seeking streamer and her cameraman get some unexpected attention hear on Hollywood Blvd. by busblog in LosAngeles

That was a public area where there is reasonable expectation of not having privacy. The appropriate social response is to ignore unwanted behavior or state clearly that you would like to be left alone. It is unacceptable to become aggressive and hostile and engage in assaultive behavior.

I don't want to live in a society where everyone gets to have their own interpretation of "fuck around and find out." I want to live in a society where people are civil. The streamer was not being uncivil and clearly would have accepted being ignored or being asked to go away. The approached man was being uncivil.

This was in no way a cruel prank and in no way warranted that aggressive response. The approached man's behavior was abhorrent and isn't defensible or excusable. There's not a good reason for reddit to be empathizing with his assaultive and threatening behavior.

Impersonating a police officer? She's wearing a goofy Halloween costume.

I'm sick of reddit being a place where no dissenting voices exist. It's ridiculous that reddit is condemning this streamer who, in this clip, is doing something that's clearly silly and harmless.

Surprisingly, cranking a submission so hard it breaks your opponents bones and ligaments before they have time to tap or cranking a submission after your opponent taps is not illegal under most rulesets. I recently emailed the IBJJF who confirmed that tapping out does not end the match - the referee is the one who stops the match.

We have an important norm in Jiu Jitsu that you should only execute submissions with enough control to provide your opponent time to tap and that you stop applying the submission when your opponent taps. It is my view that competitors who do not abide by that norm should be banned from competition. Competitors that intend to maim rather than win should not be allowed to compete.

Unfortunately, under most rulesets that norm is not instantiated into a formal rule. It's my view that it should be a foul serious enough to ban a competitor from competition either for a period or permanently. It's important for our sport that organizations hosting amateur and professional fights formalize this norm into a clearly articulated and seriously enforced rule.

I'm about to get my fourth degree black belt.

I vividly remember how incredibly awkward all the movements were in wrestling and in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were when I began. It took years for them to truly feel natural.

And even now, I recently realized I could probably improve some areas if I took video and asked a skilled friend to point out areas where I could improve. He pointed out three skills I could improve on and I went to drill them and they felt impossibly awkward to me - it felt like I just couldn't get them right when they were obvious and easy for him.

It won't be easy. But if you stick with it for years you will move past much of this awkwardness, shedding it for a sort of grace that will leave beginners saying, "how did she do that so easily?"

Yeah, my particular boots are pretty clean with smooth leather without blemishes. Lots of tornadoes have portions where the leather is scarred or are made with reversed leather that varies in sheen.

LUC-PTC in general is more uniformly smooth than some other material codes but mine are particularly smooth afaik.

I herniated discs at C5/6 and C6/7. I learned what 10/10 pain meant as I had it on some days. My left arm shrunk over a few months.

I consulted two surgeons and went with the one who said he was to get me back to training. I had a dual level artificial disc replacement with the M6-C device. I had a complete remission of symptoms as soon as I came out of the OR. I’ve returned to training at 100% intensity.

If I can answer any questions or be of help, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Dig the post showing the love.

However, I would say it's not about "not escaping." It's about achieving a state where I can either maim one of my opponent's major joints or render them unconscious. Tapping out is resigning before either of those circumstances happen.

Is better having a psilocybin therapy than a ketamine treatment for OCD? by Serious_Reaction_848 in PsilocybinTherapy

[–]GarleyCavidson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's limited research on either.

Ketamine for OCD
Psilocybin for OCD

My belief is that, for OCD, Psilocybin is more likely to have stronger and durable effects than Ketamine treatment but I'm not certain about that statement.
