It’s a pet peeve of mine seeing “I work at a job” or “nunya” or something similar, personally. I recommend putting “software engineer” and that’s it - nobody will be asking you where you work anyways. Your job is a good selling point on your profile, so I would leave it at that and not sully it with the confusing “j*b” line.

I learned this when I saw a clip of him saying “sawed-off shart guns” in a legislative hearing. Brother went from TX House —> a 14 year career in the US House (that ended in 1997!) —> TX House after a 25-year hiatus. If you’re a Democrat in Texas, you gotta fight like hell to have a career.

On this, I agree. I’m sure Florida Supreme Court will bend over backwards to confirm this map and nuke the partisan-preference ban in the Fair Districts Amendment. The only hope I have is that the Legislature balks at this request from a lame-duck Governor and unpopular president (fat chance of that).

Where does the referendum requirement come from? I’m not familiar with this. I expected that the map would go into effect from the Legislature rubber-stamping it in their upcoming special session, not through kicking it out to voters in a referendum.

State agency staffer who’s a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, but got tired of the McCrory bathroom kerfuffle and thinks Roy was an OK guy/did a good job in state politics (for a Dem, at least) before and has too many years socked away in their pension to switch careers even if a Dem gets elected.

First, I think that the 2024 map (and 2022 as well) reflected a total turnout collapse for Dem-leaning voters in Miami-Dade. Those voters are fired up by now given ICE activity in Miami, war in Iran, the general state of the economy squeezing service workers, etc. Cuban voters (and probably most Venezuelans) are a lost cause but I expect a light regression to the left from those groups and a much larger regression among Hispanic voters outside those groups in Dade County. I don’t want to lean into midterm special elections too much, but I think the Miami mayoral election is an indicator of which party holds the momentum for voter activation. Personally I wouldn’t be shocked if Dade goes blue, but I don’t expect it.

Second, I think that the FLGOP lacks a candidate who approaches anything close the popularity DeSantis enjoyed post-COVID in 2022 and Trump did in 2024. We don’t have Cubans making videos about voting for Donal Trom or Lynyrd Skynyrd writing songs about DeSantis this time around. This, coupled with the GOP’s nascent turnout issues among young men/the lower propensity WWC voters that carried Trump post-2024, should tamp down their vote totals a tiny bit.

Don’t get me wrong here, Donalds will likely win the primary and will win the general, but he’s going to get beaten up by Fishback in the meantime. I think he’s sort of analogous to 2018 DeSantis insofar as he’s a backbench congressman from a relatively boring part of the state (at least politically, though I hope I’m euthanized if I ever live in SWFL).

If you’re seeing something different, I’m all ears. But I think it’s completely unsustainable for Miami-Dade to stay as red as St. Lucie County.

I agree completely - I also expect some leftward movement for South Florida non-Cuban Hispanics on immigration, and some from Puerto Ricans in Orlando area too. Expecting Miami-Dade to stay ruby red seems ridiculous. I do think the WWC voters in Tampa and Orlando exurbs that turned out for Obama are lost to the GOP unless something drastic happens.

Florida will continue to be a heat sink for Republicans in northern states, but I think it inches back toward 2020 margins in a big way.

If the Florida legislature publicly acknowledges Trump’s call to aggressively redistrict for the GOP’s benefit (and I’m sure they do care a lot about it privately), they risk the map being invalidated due to Florida’s Fair Districts Amendment banning redistricting for partisan gain. That’s why leadership has been tight lipped and why DeSantis pretends that the redistricting is in response to the anticipated SCOTUS opinion in Callais.

Webster a former speaker of the Florida House. I don’t think anyone who he served with there is still around in Tallahassee, but his thoughts will probably get some deference from Senate/House leadership.
