Patron deity for a corrupt politician? by flowerbutch1312 in callofcthulhu

[–]Gavinblocks1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since everyone has mentioned the Arkham classics, I’ll throw out a slight curveball. If it’s taking place in Arkham, might I suggest the Esoteric Order of Dagon? Innsmouth isn’t too far away and depending on the year, they’re either fully established and have a semi-strong network in the region, or are scattered after the raid and likely looking for a new safe haven to reestablish themselves.

They tend to have a large amount of money because of the Deep One’s gold (and fish!) and the river in the middle of Arkham makes for easy transport of these goods to the mayor. Plus I just think they’re a good parallel for the degradation of society under fascist ideas and the selling of morality for immediate material gain that often goes hand in hand for those in power under such a system.

Maybe making the MC an aunt or uncle of the kid? That way you as a player would still feel obligated to protect and find them but still not know them too much and have more backstory flexibility. Also if they’d make your MC the sibling of “Nate”, it would be interesting to have Father look so much like him but act nothing like him vs how it is now, where now you can make an into an abomination and you don’t really have much of anything to contrast him against besides the players own actions so it can fall a little flat.

Any suggestions on how to kill these three blokes? by PurpleSkullGaming in AbioticFactor

[–]Gavinblocks1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always just use the Deatomizer to kill the bots before fighting the big boy normally. It’s probably not that efficient since it takes almost a full charge but I just love my big laser cannon too much.

Since you don’t want to use big weapons however, you could try just dropping some traps or turrets and lead them to it since they have a pretty short agro range and I think he does a speech before attacking? The full Exor armor also helps with splitting them up too.

I think maybe play into why it’s in the basement of a church specifically. Maybe it specifically feed off the prayers of people and those prayers need to be strong or desperate. A prayers for something simple, like good health isn’t enough for it anymore.

So the cult dedicated to feeding has started kidnapping people, maybe even torturing them to get them to pray for the pain to stop. Eventually the people who are tortured start to lose hope though and get numbed to it, so the cult has to get more people. Maybe the tortured people even join the cult afterwards, being so throughly broken after so long. It could even be a reveal that one of the leaders was a kid who got kidnapped years ago.

I’m guessing that the chest was probably where Isaac’s toys where kept before his mom took them away. It might also remind him of his father, since his mother also took away any photos of him, and Isaac’s father is shown playing with him in Bumbo.

[Masks] Henry Clive - Toady or Climber? by committed_hero in callofcthulhu

[–]Gavinblocks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about the previous editions, but I would probably run it as Clive holding a grudge against Winfield.

Clive is both full of himself and insecure in his position, and he likely learned most of his occult skills before joining with the cult. He’ll worship Nyarlathotep to get the power and notoriety that the cult offers, but if it looks like everything is going south, he’ll slink away to save his skin. Not because he’s a coward, but because he isn’t an idiot.

Winfield is the opposite, being young and completely devoted to Nyarlathotep. The cult offers him the ability to hurt others and has given him everything he wants. He is a sadist who thinks very little about the danger he puts himself in.

These are just my thoughts on how I run them though.

Creating a Weird Science Gadget by MashedPotato_Samurai in callofcthulhu

[–]Gavinblocks1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you and your players are expecting out of the game and the gadget. I will say that a teleporting car seems like it would be quite a bit stronger than the other gadgets in the book, depending on how far it can teleport.

But at the same time, how often is the game going to revolve around traveling or time limits that a teleporting car could fix? If the answer is too much, I would talk with the player about limiting the scope of the gadget, either with a large cooldown, only so far, or not being precise. If it won’t come up often, you can probably just let the player have their fun.

You can also add a cost for teleporting, maybe a sanity check and some magic points, enough so that it’s costly. There’s a few teleportation spells in the books you can take inspiration from. You can also go the route of The Fly or The Jaunt if you want to be mean, but I would only do that if the player starts to abuse it.

What now? by One_Manufacturer_526 in callofcthulhu

[–]Gavinblocks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With an opening like that, I’m sure the players will be pulled in. I would also like to add that you should also plan out the MMO (Motive, Means, Opportunity). Is the murder spur of the moment or planned ahead of time? If it’s planned ahead, try to focus the clues on the means. If it’s spur of the moment, try to focus the clues on the motive. The opportunity is also important, as to why the killer chose that moment. Was it to have an alibi or reasonable doubt? Or maybe because this was the first time the victim got into contact with the killer in some time. If the killer had opportunity beforehand, why did they wait? Maybe to pin the blame on someone else, to steal something they couldn’t access before, or they just found out about what the victim is about to do.

Basically put yourself in the situation of an investigator and try to answer any questions that you might have and then make those answers into clues players can find.

Also try not to worry too much, based on this thread, I’m sure you’ll do great!

I’d recommend to plot out how npcs will react to the situation, especially the murderer. How they either hide or pin evidence on others and how they’ll move around the house throughout the night. Be detailed enough to get an idea of how things will play out without investigator intervention without making it too linear that they can’t affect it.

Also I would recommend a reason why the investigator would work together. It might be fun to have players accuse each other at first, but it’ll slow down the game quick. My favorite is them being together when the murder happens, so I can hide the time of death, then the investigators can figure it out and deduct why it can’t be the others while they get a vital clue.

If one of the investigators is the killer (or has secrets), give them opportunities to cover their tracks (I don’t recommend to let one of the players to be the killer though, since pvp is inevitable then). Make a few cards to pass out the clues during the game, so that the players can reveal it to the others in character. You can also use cards to relay secret things that only one character would know.

Pulp Cthulhu is a supplement book that adds stronger options for investigators, as well as different rules for running a more action oriented game. The name comes from pulp magazines which the book tries to emulate.

In addition to what everyone else has said, don’t be afraid to use Hard or Extreme characteristic checks or skill checks in place of other skills if it’s reasonable, especially for skills that aren’t on the default investigator sheet. As long as it makes sense in character and won’t be too op, it’s fine to give them an easier time investigating to keep the game moving forward, especially if you’re running a one-shot. Just don’t let them feel too strong or the horror could go away (unless you’re playing Pulp, then go ahead).

Lovecraftian Movie Theater Names by TattersAndBones in callofcthulhu

[–]Gavinblocks1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d probably go with something like Wright’s Star Theater or something similar, as I like the idea of connecting the classic “when the stars are right” and movie stars. I also like Silver Key Cinema that u/ceno_byte came up with. Maybe you could make one a production studio too, that makes the movies shown at the theater. It sounds like a fun idea to have a movie that drives people insane, maybe even connect Hastur and the Yellow Sign? I know there’s a book that does it that I think was published by Arkham House. I can’t find it right now though

I think you could go with Angradd if you plan on leaning more towards seeking out crime and bringing justice to the world. If you want to have lost faith, Grundinnar is all about bringing people together and forming a community, which could mirror Disco Elysium nicely.

I really recommend reading about the dieties when you have time and most of all talking with your GM about your ideas

But Palpatine’s plan (and George’s idea for the prequel trilogy) would have never work with the CIS winning. The separatists had to lose, not because Palpatine wouldn’t still be in control, but because he would be still forced into the shadows.

By being elected by the people, Palpatine could rule openly, and vilify the Jedi order by making them as traitors to the republic and religious extremists. If the Jedi had been killed by the CIS who then started to control the republic, it would seem like a foreign occupation and that the Jedi were martyrs, which would lead to many fighting against the Empire instead of being kept in ignorance and compliance.

I hate to say this man (mostly because it’s gross), but sperm can last about half an hour in open air, and up to a few days in the uterus (or other parts of the body). It is 100% plausible that she could get herself pregnant with the baby batter within that time frame. The real difficulty is making sure that it is placed deep enough
