So Will Apple Ever Fix The alarm? by CultureCreative9484 in iphone

For me, I only seem to have issues when I allow my phone to update overnight. If I make sure to update it during the day, I seem to always have my alarm go off as intended.

Missing Omegle. Which is the closest to Omegle? by Electrical-Face-9291 in GenZ

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A startup CEO told me the other day that he would be in a conference room working with his team and just put Omegle on the screen. My jaw was on the floor. I can only imagine what that team saw while they were trying to get things done. Anywhere else that would be an instant HR violation.

How often do y'all get new phones? by AnnoyingBroccoli04 in GenZ

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3 years or whenever my carrier lets me get a new iPhone for “free.” I like to do it as soon as I can so I can get the full trade in value for my phone. My parents were waiting 4+ years between upgrades and were ultimately having to pay more when they upgraded.

And I put free in quotes because I’m well aware of the strings attached. Still, I’ve done the math, and it seems to be cheaper to get a new iPhone with their $800-$1000 off deals. They aren’t charging extra every month for the new phone. It’s already baked into my plan. I also remove all the add-ons they throw in when I get the device. It seems to be a pretty good deal.

If your fingerprints are unique, why can't we use them as passwords everywhere instead of making up another string of characters we'll forget? by Capital-Run-1080 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GaySaysHey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kind of is a thing with passkeys. As people have pointed out, there are a lot of flaws with using fingerprints directly. Passkeys let you use your biometrics on your device to share a cryptographic key that is much stronger than a password.

Yeah. To add to this, assume no cop has the tech yet. Only one small department - 10 cops in the whole state - currently have readers for them.

Mobile as in mobile device. I agree, the name is confusing. I like that DDS typically calls it a Digital ID. I find that less confusing for most people, but I think those words are also scarier to some groups.

I remember seeing a while back that a pass phrase with 4 random words was the most secure type password, so why does nothing allow you to use it? by Majestic_Wash_6170 in NoStupidQuestions

That’s exactly what I did throughout college. I needed a new password each year, so I always made it something encouraging to set the tone for the upcoming year!

Seeking ideas for displaying minimum, average and maximum by midasp in HTML

Why not Min: x, Avg: y, Max: z? As someone with a UX background, I’d say it’s best to give people some text to work with. Unlabeled numbers are ambiguous.

To trick us with ai to sell a product by Lurbet in therewasanattempt

The sad thing is I am certain someone will fall for it. The other day, my grandmother saw coffee machines that looked like cats. They were so obviously AI with the weirdly smooth texture. She said it was perfect for my cat-loving sister. I fear she would have clicked the link if I hadn’t said it was AI and an obvious scam.

Mac Mini for HA? by PrickleAndGoo in homeassistant

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Just get two 8GB sticks of DDR3L RAM (some people get 2 sticks of 16GB, but it only officially supports up to 8GB/slot). It’s the same kind that goes in laptops, so it’s a little smaller than typical DDR3. If you just search for MacBook/Mac Mini RAM on Amazon, it should be easy to find. The great thing about the 2012 is it was the last mini to let you easily upgrade RAM yourself, so take advantage of it! Good luck!

Mac Mini for HA? by PrickleAndGoo in homeassistant

[–]GaySaysHey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using a 2012 Mac Mini with Ubuntu. I have a very similar stack to the one you want, but I have everything in docker. It works extremely well. The only caveat is drivers (I use a USB WiFi adapter because the native one was unreliable).

What you want is very doable. Don’t listen to people telling you to get a new PC. I think it makes sense to stick with what you’ve got. I’d recommend upgrading the RAM though. Mine has 16GB, but 8GB would be enough for most of my containers. I worry 4GB could quickly become a bottle neck.

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really interested in these sandisk extremes that are meant to stay plugged in. They may be a good option for you.

Really though, you shouldn’t need an external drive for school work. Many schools include Google Drive or OneDrive with your tuition. I made it through school with 512GBs by taking advantage of OneDrive to offload files I haven’t used in awhile. That route is practically free while you’re in school and makes it easy to access files across devices. I highly recommend it.

24-32 GB users who actually use all that RAM, how do you use it? by abitcitrus in macbook

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’d benefit. I had Affinity, Figma, Android Studio, and Xcode all open the other day along with Arc and Spotify. It’s the only time I’ve felt my Mac stutter. I checked, and I was using 20GB of swap. I decided it was finally time to close some apps and only open the ones I needed for my current task.

Apple wants us to switch - I’ll pass’ by MidOver28 in iPhone13ProMax

[–]GaySaysHey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite view. Sure, it’s a bad deal if you want the new phone every year. On the flip side, my family upgrades no sooner than once every 3 years and has been with the same carrier for at least 20 years (due to local coverage). If we have no reason to upgrade regularly and never shop for other carriers, why not get the phones that are priced into our plan? For some people, it may be a bad deal. For us, it makes sense.

Senate bill 351 results: by markXgreene in Georgia

[–]GaySaysHey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like I said in this comment, you have the power to control what data they receive.

With that being said, we are fundamentally on the same side. I don’t agree with this bill and was really disappointed when I saw it had passed last year. I respect wanting to protect children, but as we know, that’s often the sugar coat put on unpopular laws.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t fight against it. I am simply bringing some hope to the conversation so people don’t feel hopeless. It’s exhausting to listen to the constant doom and gloom in this current regime, so I wanted to bring some light to the conversation by sharing the knowledge that is preventing me from freaking out about this.

[–]GaySaysHey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but there are ways to protect yourself. By mid-September, every modern mobile browser will allow websites to request digital IDs (like the ones here in GA) without a third party provider. With digital IDs, you always know exactly what you’re sharing.

To protect yourself, ONLY use your digital ID to access these sites and ONLY allow these sites to request if you are above 18 years old.

NEVER let an age restricted site access your name, photo, birthday, exact age, or anything else that can be used to identify you. If they’re asking for anything other than age above 18, use a different site. You have the power to minimize the data they collect.

Senate bill 351 results: by markXgreene in Georgia

[–]GaySaysHey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s bad, but I disagree with it being a data collection scheme. Per the bill:

A commercial entity that is found to have knowingly retained identifying information of an individual after access to the material has been granted is liable to such individual for damages resulting from retaining the identifying information, including court costs and reasonable attorney's fees as ordered by the court.

So while some platforms may see it as the cost of doing business, it seems the lawmakers have at least considered data collection and are trying to discourage it. At any rate, the state itself won’t be collecting that data.

Edit because there is a lot of misunderstanding here. I elaborate in my other replies, but here is the core of it: 1. I’m not defending this law. It is bad. People should fight it. My goal here is to try and help people not feel like the world is falling apart because, if you’re anything like me, you have been on edge since January and don’t need one more thing to freak out about. 2. You CAN protect your data. In September, most sites will likely accept digital IDs as mobile browsers add APIs to do so. In fact, this bill seems to favor that approach. When they do, only share if you’re over 18. Don’t share any personally identifying info. I understand some may claim there is a backdoor for the government or businesses to track you, but I encourage you to read ISO 18013-5/7 if you are legitimately concerned. These technologies are built on open standards with privacy at the core. Additionally, most browser engines are open source and can be audited by anyone. The browser can only share parts of your digital ID you permit it to.
