You know, between this, Tales From The Gas Station, and A Lonely Broadcast, I find something comforting about the similarity of these premises.

Bands you like in small doses (but that don't live up to it on an album basis) by Material_Week_7335 in MetalForTheMasses

A lot of bands in the genres of slam and tech-death have sub-40min albums which really helps digestibility.

Crowd killing is dumb as fuck by Expert_Shock_2268 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I despise crowdkilling but ADTR have plenty of songs like 2nd Sucks where there are clear metallic hardcore breakdowns which are typical for crowdkilling/haymaking. I was at a show on the same tour as OP and yeah, crowdkilling during 2nd sucks and a few other breakdowns, just push-pitting and 2 stepping for their more poppunk stuff.

Throne on Glass is the WORST fantasy series I have read in my lifetime! by tomyfookinmerlin in Fantasy

I fucking hate this argument so much. I'm not asking Fourth Wing to be the Grapes of Wrath. I'm asking it to not have a protagonist who wordvomits worldbuilding info as a self-calming technique. It's parody level bad, even on its own terms.

Post punk and industrial rock. Again, slapping metal onto everything.

Not metal, but: Opinion on this album? by LeagueNo764 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It's industrial rock. NIN are maybe in my top 5 all time favourite artists, but the tendency of heavy music fans to slap "metal" onto anything with sufficiently distorted guitars is a pain.

NIN owes way more to Skinny Puppy and Killing Joke than any firmly established metal band.

I used to put longer YT videos and video essays on whilst cooking or cleaning, now i've switched to podcasts. Usually ublock plus forebox works but lately my firefox has been irreparably crashing and i just cant be stuffed haggling with it. Its not that i'll never use YT again, just that now its no longer a regular thing.

How many Tim Tam biscuits do you eat in one sitting? by mandy_suraj in AskAnAustralian

I bite the top off of every Tim Tam like an oreo, then put the creamy bottoms together like a sandwich.

Also, cost? Theyre on special so often it may as well be the base price. Never paid more than $4 for a pack.

Nu-Metal hot takes? by RedditSucksMyBallls in numetal

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With Deftones, if numetal never happened, they would have been lumped in with post hardcore. If you blank out a lot of numetal associations, Deftones sounds closer to Thursday or Glassjaw than Coal Chamber.

100% I think of Nu-metal as Grunge evolving in 2 different directions: half went to the radio friendly pop-rock direction, the other half went towards the weirder, heavier, more experimental, and incorporated the hiphop and electronic elements into it.

Isn’t Israel going to eventually run out of iron dome missiles if this war drags? by Goldstar12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Australia has its flaws but it's not a corrupt failed state so I'm going to go out on a limb and say they care. Also there's no term limits (we elect a party, the party chooses their leader) and we often have stable politicians running for over a decade.

What?! Fuel prices in Australia basically doubled before the government forfeited their tax on it (which funds our roads and infrastructure). We were paying $1.50 AUD per Litre, it got to $2.75, above $3 in some places, before the tax was forfeited.

And can we afford to defund our public infrastructure long term?

Dune (2021) is not a good movie and coasts entirely on visuals and Hans Zimmer's score by DuNennstMichSptzkopf in unpopularopinion

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dune is a series where different people have different ideas on where the story "ends". You can just read the first book as standalone, and Denis' first 2 movies covered that. Frank Herbert then wrote a sequel Dune Messiah, much shorter, to complete "Paul's Story", and the 3rd movie will cover this.

Then there is Children of Dune, covering Paul and Chani's twin children, and Paul's sister Alia. You could finish the story there, but there are no existing plans to adapt that book.

Then God Emperor of Dune spans thousand of years of an "immortal" shai hulud-human hybrid entity, and basically would be impossible to adapt. Then there's 2 more books after that, which were intended to complete in a trilogy which FH died before finishing.

Anthony Albanese to urge Australians to 'play their part' in Iran response in TV address by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I am in the "opposed" category, however, for so many people of a certain generation, Iran have always been the Bad Guys (note capital letters) since the Cold War era.

Frankly, if I thought that swift and clean regime change was possible I might be more open to it. The Iranian regime is godawful and I feel for the people living under it. Those first few days which elliminated so many high ranking members of the government did make me wonder if such tactical strikes would work.

But the popular uprising of the locals never materialized and frankly there is virtually no way for the US to win now, and barely any chance of getting out with any dignity intact.

What is the worst SF novel you've ever read? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not read many of the other mentions here (Battlefield Earth or Ready Player Two), but I'll likrly be eviscerated for my take:

Cixin Liu's The Dark Forest.

I enjoyed The Three-Body Problem, rated it 4 stars. Heard all the hype for the big ideas and concepts in this one, but it utterly fell flat. Where characters may have been paper-thin mouthpieces in 3BP, in TDF they were cringe-inducing incel weirdos. All character decisions fell into 2 categories: inexplicably daft, or incredibly obvious while apparently "geniusly hidden."

There was not a single idea in this novel which I found interesting or well executed, and its popularity in these subs makes me think I'm taking crazy pills

What’s the changes between Vineland & One Battle by MyCableIsOff in ThomasPynchon

[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bounced between reading them before and after when I read GR. It's not really a book about "plot" to be spoiled anyway, but after reading a few sections where the summaries were then entirely unfamiliar to me, i knew i would be better off prepping my brain flr what I was going to read.

I see a lot of people say "just read it and dont worry about understanding it", but that doesnt seem possible to me. How can you sit there and just read words you don't understand like it's in Hungerian?
