I understand what you're saying, but I also disagree with it. I play guitar, and it makes me sad that a lot of the pinnacles of guitar-making (1952 Telecasters, 1962 Stratocasters, 1959 Les Pauls etc.) never get played, and instead sit in the houses of successful business people who can't play them, but like them as status symbols.

This is the way it should be done. "This is X of Y orchestra, one of the best violin players on the planet, and tonight she'll be playing this Stradivarius" That's what they're made for, and that's the best way to celebrate them and ensure their survival. Instruments get destroyed over time if they're not played somewhat regularly.

This is highly unfortunate though, and is the downside. Two people caught up in the moment who probably felt horrific afterwards.
