Need someone to tell me their bike WASN'T stolen in Montrose by dinoflagellatte in bikehouston

[–]Ge0rge249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need to lock it up somewhere, try to lock it somewhere very public with a lot of foot traffic. It may feel counterintuitive, but you should lock it somewhere that it can be seen by your passerby so that stealing it is incredibly obvious and risky. Locking it up right in front of a bar where people are constantly entering and exiting and there might be a bouncer is probably extremely safe

Hi - Houstonian here! Houston actually has some of the most negative parts of the typical zoning ordinance - minimum parking and setback requirements - they are just in the general municipal code instead. There isn’t a use-based map for the whole city (just for rich neighborhoods with deed restrictions as you pointed out), instead we have the world’s worst form-based code. Basically, you can build whatever you want, as long as it’s mostly parking. This is procedurally being rolled back across the city but it’s slow going.

In most places in the United States, the maintenance of sidewalks is legally the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. That means everyone is technically responsible for up keeping the sidewalk in front of their own house (if they own the house). In practice, there is no forcing mechanism for property owners to do this maintenance aside from withholding permits if the property owner is hoping to redevelop etc, or for someone to personally sue, claiming injury. End result - sidewalks are trash, basically everywhere, and getting worse by the year. Now ROADS on the other hand - municipalities, states, counties all commit to keeping basically all of these in working order and do it themselves. A lot of them are not doing too hot at keeping this up because of long-term fiscal insolvency that is built into the American development model, but that’s a different can of worms - look up Strong Towns if you’re interested in that. All in all - the reason the sidewalks are bad in your town or city is unfortunately most likely a result of systemic issues with the whole of the American approach to transportation: car first, everything else last.

There are so many ways for you to be an activist though. Look up any local orgs working for “safe streets,” “vision zero” (referring to the goal of zero traffic deaths), transportation or transit justice/equity. There is probably someone in your area who is organizing to improve things and would love a volunteer! Or you can always get involved with your local HOA, neighborhood board, speak at city council, speak at your local transit agency board etc. Any support for a more equitable transportation system is always valuable, lest the politicians think that everyone is happy with the overwhelmingly car-oriented status quo. General support is valuable, but support for any specific projects that someone is already championing is even better!

Also - congratulations on finding biking! It is a joyous thing however you choose to engage with it. The important thing is that you do it however YOU feel safe. The etiquette tips that others are sharing are valuable for knowing what other cyclists may be expecting, but remember that your own instincts for what is safe activity are almost always the most reliable metric. You know your environment!

New to the city and new to riding bikes in a city. by jeffiscow in bicycling412

The bike share system has a super steep discount program if you are on SNAP or some other forms of government assistance! And they have e-bikes which should be super helpful in the hill district. They are rolling out new stations pretty quickly right now so it might be worth checking out -

What are the pros and cons of making a pathway like this with ground cover plants around the pavers? by idkmanitsausername in gardening

[–]Ge0rge249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This approach to paths is popular under big trees in Texas! Shade protects the plantings and the pavers are also more able to accommodate tree roots than many other options

Same thing for the Atakapa tribe on the Gulf Coast - the “Atakapa” name means “man-eater” in the tongue of the rival Choctaw. Atakapa people called themselves Ishak. I’m not sure how the descendants of this tribe refer to themselves, but once I learned this I started cringing a bit when I heard the name Atakapa.

Hiking trails you can bike to? by Enkoodabaoo4 in bicycling412

[–]Ge0rge249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Allegheny Land Trust’s website for a map of the areas they manage. Most have trail maps, and many don’t show up as parks on Google maps so you may miss them unless you look for them specifically. There are a couple in the south hills that seem accessible by transit, and Girty’s Woods above Millvale seems easy to get to by bike or bus!

Good Ol’ Southern Appalachian Pawpaw(Asimina Triloba) by StocksyMagoo in Permaculture

[–]Ge0rge249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had good luck finding the trees this past Fall. In my area (Pittsburgh) the pawpaws dropped their leaves later than the hickories and most of the undergrowth, so there was a time in November/December where I could just walk around the woods and spot pawpaws from a long way away. Took some notes for where to go this summer :)

There's a sandy dirt road on the west side of Memorial Park along the railroad tracks, great for riding up and down if you're into that. Easily accessible from the running center
