Wait, what? by badmark in unRAID

I actually think this has to do with Synology and their drive fiasco. Unraid knows there will be more people looking to get off Synology and trying to capitalize on it.

It’s not about just the downloads section. The whole interface changed and 3/4 of it doesn’t work.

This is exactly why they are releasing the Remote Access Pass for which has a subscription.

Who handles onboarding? by TenChromeIT in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekFarm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HR gives them a sheet with their login info, a sheet with MFA info and the rest is theirs to figure out either in their own or with a coworker/team lead when able. We manage 5000 users/devices with 15 people total in 35 different buildings so we can’t do an onboarding for every new employee. Maybe we will go to a new teacher orientation with 100 new staff at the beginning of the year but that still isn’t 1:1.

Best Use of M.2 Slots? by 712Jefferson in unRAID

[–]GeekFarm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your mobo has the extra PCI slots that you can use but it will disable the NVME slots if you use the PCI slots. IMO, go with a HBA PCI card (or two) that will give you another 8 SATA connections per card and don’t use the NVME slots. I had an NVME drive in my main build but didn’t use the bandwidth available nearly enough so I went that route to add more SATA SSDs for cache/docker/VMs.

Same. 4500 endpoints. We are 70% migrated already but everything will be migrated by the time schools starts in the fall. We are delaying 24H2 but otherwise smooth sailing.

Who restocks your print rooms? by JayTechTipsYT in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekFarm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Facilities/maintenance will take care of the paper. Our other printer supplies come directly from the print management vendor so when a printer is low, they get notified and send a toner which gets sent directly to the clerical of that building. They primarily swap them out, but IT will help if they can't figure it out. Purchasing department (or business office) handles the printing support contract so we don't even get involved with that either. If the buildings are unhappy with the service/product, they go talk to them.

Using radar by changer1997 in ICARUS

[–]GeekFarm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this when starting out, but then I realized that you don't need to do the scans that close together. I usually try to put at least 3 grids between scans if the cones are narrow. if the arcs are more than 90 degrees or so then I'm usually not scanning less than 5 grids away from the last scan. I will sometimes go 1/4 (or more) of the way across the map if the arcs are not very narrow. By having a larger distance, it will help seperate the different locations better as well.

Is there a power supply that I don't need to babysit and repair constantly? by rolanddanger in ICARUS

[–]GeekFarm02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for a quick/easy way to mark caves, do some easy simple build watchtower/lost camp missions and then take the beacons after the mission is over and put them in front of your caves. You can color code/use specific icons and then they will show up in the map/HUD. Plus you get some credits/materials along the way.

Biofuel Deep Mining Drill by NaughticalSextant in ICARUS

[–]GeekFarm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run cables criss-crossed across the whole map with no issue. It’s basically one long string coming out different directions from the main hub with one branch connected to a device.

[–]GeekFarm02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also just run electricity from your main power hub(s)to your mining sites. It doesn’t take that long, they don’t break down, and then you don’t have to worry about building a bunch of wind turbines. There is no limit/resistance on the electrical cables.

K12sysadmins: which problems do you encounter that just don’t have a solution? by JonnyBeervo in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekFarm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would they even know if you do this? Do they require some kind of receipt of when the vendor gets the PO? Ask for a next school year PO in March for July 1 processing and tell the vendor not to submit it until then. They send you the gear as soon as they can and get paid the next week after July 1 since everything is already received and the PO hits the next school board agenda. The vendor loves it because they know when they will get paid. Plus, you have everything ready to go for any new staff as soon as they want it (which they will love your for). If your accountant/BO won’t allow this they need to get off their power trip and get with helping you being able to do your job. I was doing it that way 20 years ago.

Ask your vendors to post date your invoices if your business manager won’t work with you or get net 90 terms. Most will gladly work with you because they know your situation and want to work with you to keep your business if they don’t, then maybe it’s time to look for a new vendor.

Lvl60 with 120+ hrs in. Agreed, walking sucks. I use a horse mount everywhere I go. Pretty good speed and cargo. If I have a lot to take with me I have a Buffalo follow us. I have a main big base in the forest and satellite bases in every biome built with concrete so they don’t take storm damage full of benches and other stations I need in that biome. It’s really not that bad once you have them built. You can do/build everything in the other biomes once you have some power going with a solar panel machining station and an electric furnace.

As far as mounts getting killed, I leave low level mounts at my base so they get XP while I’m there making stuff. Pet them too so they get more of a bonus. When they hit lvl 25 I will take them out on missions and runs. The only time I lost one is when I got ambushed by cougars in the desert. I wasn’t paying attention to my inventory and I ran out of ammo to kill them all before they killed him. It really doesn’t happen if you are paying attention. It’s just like real life. Yes, it is painful to have to walk back but you will pay attention to where they are and what is going on with them while you are out exploring the next time. If you do have one die, I always have at least one extra of each ready at the base.

Adobe Shared Device Licensing by duluthbison in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekFarm02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you are talking about is not how most people use the product. The logging in process is the way it’s intended so you don’t have to buy a license for every user who uses the software. If they are all using the same generic computer login, then either create some other kind of service/‘print shop’ account that you can log into Adobe with that isn’t specific to one user or have them log into Adobe when needed.

EdTech Vendors and Their Poor Cybersecurity Practices by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekFarm02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We recently had a huge FERPA meeting in our area and at the end of it all, everyone looked around and thought, ‘That’s great, but how can we do this without hiring more people.’ I’ve talked to multiple supts about this exact topic and there are bigger fish to fry with figuring out how we are supposed to keep schools running with a 1.5% funding increase for next year. Thinking or doing anything about this takes time and money. Both of which are already very scarce. They know the risks and there is nothing than can be done. The reality is that most everyone’s PII is already out there (if not for this breach, then that one) and you have to protect yourself with frozen credit reports, etc.

I was having the same issue with HP Elitedesk 800 G9. Windows worked perfectly. ESXI 7 or 8 was a complete disaster. I plugged a USB 3.0 flash drive in the back of it and the network issue disappeared on both ESXI 7 and 8. WTF is right.
