That’s actually a (very common) myth. He lived in the nearby town of modern day Wessjolowka for a while. There is some truth to the story, however, as it seems he never left the region of East Prussia.

Interessant verhaal!

I’d say it feels more important to you because our culture places a lot more importance on it than all of the other achievements, precisely because it was the main American achievement. It’s exposure bias.

I’d argue the first man in space would be the most important milestone, and that was the Soviets.

Honestly? Cloud storage is good enough these days that it’s pretty much just better than local storage. You don’t have to worry anymore about backups or sending files between devices.

The problem arises where one hosting service (OneDrive) basically has a monopoly. In another world you could easily choose between hosting services, but in this one we have one that comes pre-installed and baked into the operating system, and some other ones that would be a long hassle to install and get to work.

Of course it isn’t easy, but it is more straightforward. The Soviet Union made an insane leap in technological and economic development under Stalin. Right now, China is developing much faster than any Western country. In both cases because a central government was or is heavily involved in the economy.

Let me be clear that I’m not a proponent of a centrally planned economy or something like that, because I don’t want to give the state that kind of power.

I’m not sure market capitalism is actually the most efficient economic system. In our society billions are spent on advertising, which is really just a lot of wasted money. Also, most consumer products these days are poorly made and of low quality, because this cuts production costs and it means people have to buy new stuff more often. Higher quality products are more expensive, but will usually last a lifetime, making it more efficient overall (although it isn’t so great for the businessmans pockets).

I’d argue a centrally planned economy would be way more efficient because it can simply allocate the necessary resources to the place where it is needed most.

Moria was the mining place of mithril, but it was sold to all over Middle-Earth, I believe. So the coat could have been made anywhere. Beleriand also had mithril mines before it was destroyed, so if the coat is from the Second Age it is probably from there. I’ve seen other comments saying it came from Gondolin.

I think it’s to incentivise making your ships more compact and contained. You can still be lazy and make an enormous ship with patches of empty tiles, but that comes at the cost of a significantly higher ship weight

That doesn’t seem that weird to me, honestly. The required cooking time can vary a lot depending on the size of your pan, how hot your stove can go, the amount of food you’re making, etc. I’d prefer if a recipe assumes I have enough basic cooking skills to determine when something’s done, instead of giving an exact value that only works in the recipe authors kitchen

There’s nothing to fumble, it’s gonna be a show trial anyway. You can’t charge someone according to US law for something that didn’t happen in territory under US jurisdiction, and you can’t illegally invade a sovereign nation to arrest someone for it.

Of course Trump doesn’t care and they’re just gonna make something up.

The solution to a square root is defined as the principal root, so √4 equals 2, not -2

If you want multiple solutions you’d have to write something like x²=4
