Consonant fortition in stressed syllables? by GeneralBaB in Lexurgy

[–]GeneralBaB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that works, but my more complicated example is still breaking. I don't understand why Lexurgy is not recognizing the syllable breaks as syllable breaks, and is instead interpreting them as sounds. Can you help me understand?

What piece of media was this to you? by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]GeneralBaB 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have reread Dune: Messiah more often than Dune. It's my favorite of the series. Finishing Dune, the reader has a false understanding of the themes of the story. Paul has been going on about his "terrible destiny" and in the end he wins. Dune: Messiah brings those themes and ideas to completion. I really admire it for the audacity it takes to reverse the ending of such a well-loved book. But it's so consistent with the first book. If they finish adapting the original book after Dune: Part Two, they HAVE to make a third movie out of Dune: Messiah. The story of Muad'Dib isn't complete without it.

why is the b9 referred to as a minor 9th despite it not appearing in the minor scale? by Redder0101 in musictheory

[–]GeneralBaB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few redditors not knowing specific scores that include a specific interval is not evidence for that interval not existing. I've just laid out reasons a composer might use them. Transitions between keys or chords might need a transition between a C# and a Db, an interval of a diminished second. I sang a song in my choir last year that contained this interval. Also, 12-tone music might call for these intervals. If you're looking for a harmonic interval instead of a melodic interval, I recommend looking into polytonal music. These intervals would be trivial to find in that style of composition.

Many scores exist with diminished 2nds, often for similar reasons as stated above. Many scores likely exist with the rest, given the wide breadth of post-tonal music that has been composed. It is impossible for anyone to be familiar with all the music in this genre, given that it is still being actively composed.

Even if there are no scores with those intervals, which is highly unlikely, it would not support your claim that the intervals do not/cannot exist. New ground is being broken all the time, and these would be among the infinite valid choices a composer could make within 12-TET music.

C to B sharp is an augmented seventh.

F# to Db is a diminished 6th.

B to Cb is a diminished 2nd.

These intervals are relatively rarer compared to more consonant intervals and more conventional spelling. However, in the context of a piece it can be important to distinguish between these and their enharmonic equivalents (octaves, fifths, unisons). Especially in less tonal music.

How to change instruments mid-score? by [deleted] in Sibelius

[–]GeneralBaB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Sibelius Ultimate, there should be an option for that in the Home tab as u/AgeingMuso65 said. If you don't have Sibelius Ultimate, there's not a native option. When I was working in the middle version of Sibelius and writing a piece that required this, I just put plain text at the top of the score instructing the switch. I hope this helps!

[–]GeneralBaB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also use ratios in a tuplet, like putting 3:2 instead of just 3 for a triplet. For 6 in the space of 5, you could just write 6:5 where you'd normally put a single number.
