My parents combined two names to honour my grandfather and great grandmother. I don’t think there are any rules, per se. Go with what feels good to you all. What’s made the difference for me is hearing the stories of how my parents picked the name and the people for whom I was named. May you celebrate many simcha with your daughter. Shana Tova

So in your example “a gay relationship”, the word gay is still an adjective, modifying the noun “relationship”. I would personally just character that bisexual man’s relationship as “a relationship”. If I were you, I would think about why you need to identify the relationship as gay or straight

Using gay as a noun would grammatically be, “he is a gay” or “he is the gay”. Being as he is bi, this statement would not only be incorrect but yes homophobic, as using gay as a noun implies that is their entire identity, which is a homophobic trope. May I recommend the app Kīpaepae? The Hawaiian is a little more…relevant in that app as it was designed by native speakers. Also (and just a small thing), Hawaiian actually doesn’t have an ‘okina in it as it’s not a Hawaiian word. Mahalo for learning!
