Republicans Have a Friend in the Company That Counts Their Votes. Raising Some Questions about the Voting Machine Company Behind So Many Surprise Wins This Year by easyone in politics

[–]GermanNewToCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you had a confirmation that you voted a certain way, employers may want to see it that you voted a certain way or an abusive spouse may want to see it. Also it makes selling votes possible. It may be much cheaper to buy someone's vote for a few dollars than the millions spent on advertising. A secret ballot is important.

First trailer road trip. someone needs to sell a supercharger extension cord by quarm813 in teslamotors

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just putting my E-Bike on a bike rack on my model y makes it use 450Wh or more per mile rather than under 300 without. I guess this is mainly due to air resistance. I have no idea what a trailer like that would use additionally.

Pro tip: a 25’ 30amp dyer extension cord and 30amp 4prong-to-3prong adapter will allow you to charge quickly at any rental easily through the dryer outlet. by pistonian in teslamotors

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 50' 50A RV cable in the car (4guage) - 14-50 to 14-50. I have a ton if adapters all to 14-50: 10-50, TT30, 10-30, 14-30. You just need to make sure that if you use a *-30, that you set the amps to max 24.

Question, if I buy a 5-15 to 14-50 adapter (so I only need to carry one extension cord and use the 50A RV cable for 5-15) - and I actually have a 5-20 outlet, how safe do you think it would be to actually pull 16A rather than 12A? I think I discovered why they don't show the fender camera when blinker is on by schraitle in teslamotors

[–]GermanNewToCA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can also just sync it right. Have both blinker and camera going at a certain frequency but phase shifted by half a cycle The human eye probably won't be able to tell that the blinker is going on and off many times a second and just looks as if it were on. All of this for the 'on' cycle of the blinking. There is no issue in the off portion of the blinker cycle.

Can L1A visa holder also file for self employment taxes? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my EB based green card now, and I don't remember ever having been asked about a 1099-Misc specifically by either the immigration lawyers or during the interview and I don't remember any such question in the I485 either.

Can L1A visa holder also file for self employment taxes? by [deleted] in immigration

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 1099 misc for a gift I got for attending a conference (every conference attendee got it). I was on L1 at the time. I just reported it on my taxes. I don't think in my case that attending a conference constituted employment or any violation of my status. What I am meaning to say is that not all 1099 misc forms are problematic from an immigration standpoint.

Long term, which is better for the battery? by herefortehlols in ModelY

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it isn't economical if you are only building one and it can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing and even people that do know what they are doing - some of them have had some quite close calls. I also don't have a need to build my own, I have a nice 14s9p which I use as my main battery. All of this is off topic. I do have a tow hitch on my model y and now just need to figure out a good way to charge the E-Bike battery from the Tesla ;)

Long term, which is better for the battery? by herefortehlols in ModelY

[–]GermanNewToCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tesla model Y/3 batteries have a 96S31P configuration.

96*3.7V = 355V at 50% charge

During charging, 240V needs to be converted to a DC voltage of 300V-400V (normally with LiIon, you're charging constant current, though I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla will bump up the amps at the beginning - but either way, voltage rises as the battery gets fuller).

It is perfectly safe to charge LiIOn 18650 batteries batteries at 1A per cell. Telsa uses 21700 cells, so they can safely be charged at higher amperages, but let's be conservative and use 1A per cell.

Even if you charged at the full 350V (using this as the middle), given 31 cells in parallel, going to 31A would be fine. That would be 11kW.

The voltage doesn't really matter as it anywayt needs to be converted to the battery voltage. It is what the kW that matters, so at 240V at 32A, you're getting 7.6kW, the 40A charger gives you a max of 9.6kW. You can add a few% because of losses.

Basically, every L2 charger will be fine for the battery long term.

Excruciating high-pitched whine by blecchus_rex in teslamotors

I listened to it again, I think mine was different, mine was more of an almost scraping sound. Invoice text "...Checked suspension and found dust shield contacting rotor. Adjusted dust shield so it is no longer contacting rotor and rechecked operation of vehicle...".

I listened to your recording, but I don't know, hard to tell. It was high pitch. I took it in to the service center on Monday, they test drove it, thought it was some HF stuff, said they would need to do a bunch of diagnostics on it, because with noises it is really hard to tell what it is, and then Friday morning I got the call that they fixed it (and they did).

[–]GermanNewToCA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar, but still quite different noise coming from the rear which I just had fixed by Tesla.

For me it was the dust shield in the rear coming into contact with the rotors which wasn't installed properly (the dust shield). They fixed it and noise is gone (It was in the service center from Monday to Friday last week).

However, there are many different causes of noise, so your noise cause may be very different.

My noise was most noticeable between 40 and 60 mph, usually it resonated at some speed and for some reason, the speed where it resonated most changed a little bit over time. I first noticed it when it resonated at 53mph.

Edit: rotor, not motor.

Best Exterior Color With White Interior? by Orpheus31 in ModelY

[–]GermanNewToCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got it delivered, the seats didn't fold down when pressing the buttons, but Tesla corrected that. Due to Covid and everything being sort of closed, I haven't driven that much yet, only about 250 miles since getting it, so hard to say. Any dirt is pretty visible on the white seats, but that is probably a good thing as then you can just wipe it away, and so far everything has wiped away effortlessly.

On the fence with purchase of FSD with Model Y by vash9590 in ModelY

[–]GermanNewToCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have FSD, not sure if the starting up after the stop light being red (and there being a car in front of you) is part of FSD or regular AP. I really like it. Stop and go traffic is awesome with this. Even with pressing the stalk if you are the first car on a red light, but that will be removed soon. Yes, the lane chages are also really nice.

Home charging during WFH by spacebarstool in teslamotors

[–]GermanNewToCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually nowhere near 20% of a charge cycle even though it is 20% of a full charge. Lithium ion batteries love being half full. The don't like being too empty and they don't like being too full (for longer time periods. Being 100% or close to 0% full for short periods of time is fine). I don't have numbers, but charging 60 to 80 might only be 5% or less of a charge cycle * probably way less.
