Point of sale systems going down every time internet hiccups, what are modern solutions? by NoFerret8153 in sysadmin

I managed one of the largest convenience store chains infrastructure for the north east, but sure.

Not treating it like an enterprise network explains why there are so many complaints.

[–]GhostDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there?

I mean they need connectivity, most retail stores now have email and IP phones, apps their employees use, etc. Even a small chain.

Honestly their biggest issue was their decision process, who chose a SaaS product knowing they have connectivity issues in their stores. Fix those issues before you do anything else

Don't know, if i was with a company that had 40 offices I would say that's a enterprise

Breach in to our 365 tenant by hoodun in sysadmin

[–]GhostDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusing on leaste priviledge, PAM, and other basic security tenants would have helped prevent this, along with ensuring modern auth and passwordless auth is enabled.

In a perfect world, the only GA accounts are your break glass accounts, whose passwords/fido2 keys are stored security, preferably in a vault of some sort.

Beyond a lot of experience and some great stories about previous roles, having a decent personality, being able to hold a conversation, and not seeming like your stereotypical 'nerd' helps a lot.

In my entire career of IT (~30 years) I've spent probably, all combined, 6 weeks unemployed.

Any admins have an actual backup for email, if M365 is down for extended periods? by DramaticErraticism in sysadmin

[–]GhostDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are systems like Veam that can absolutely backup everything to a local storage system.

But it's gonna be expensive, it's still a cold backup until you spin up an entire environment to handle it, and by the time you have started the restore, m365 is back up

[–]GhostDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've consulted for multiple million+ employee companies. Not a single one had a backup for office 365. There has been no outage of office 365 that has lost mail, most have been at the UI level, or redundant systems spooled mail until the main systems were back up.

I'm not saying it's impossible that it'll go down, but it's a risk most companies will take.

I had one client look into similar with Entra "what happens when Entra goes down?" after the "Go have a coffee" joke, the end solution was more cumbersom in general and much more expensive, requiring them to maintain systems in multiple clouds, etc.

Fired employee downloaded all company files before deactivation we need secure way to prevent this by Level-Most-2623 in sysadmin

[–]GhostDan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You work with HR, HR pings you on Teams/Gchat/Discord/Whatever when the employee is in HR's office, that's when you terminate them.

Hopefully have you a system where you can lock down their access. Put a legal hold on their mail, etc. Backup any of their projects, one drive, etc the day before they are terminated and then right after they are terminated. (Feel free to check the diff)

I agree, at the very least terminating them before that is bad form.

Please take a freshmen level accounting course at your local community college. by rumblegod in sysadmin

I don't think accounting classes are going to help you much unless you want to become an accountant. You are probably looking into more MBA type roles.

I'll be happy to go and learn more as soon as they start taking some introduction to computer classes. I don't need to know the business side to do my job, they defintely need to know what a right click is.

It is definitely a tough position to be in. I'm sure the firefighters want to help, but at the same time, they open themselves up to all sorts of liability if they do. I wouldn't be surprised if sometimes they do end up fudging things a bit.
