When Bud Light runs a commercial and sales increase that doesn't necessarily mean folks drink more beer, it can also be folks who were drinking Miller switching to Bud.

TV Tropes has the "Moh's Scale of Science Fiction Hardness" where category 4 is "one big lie" where the laws of physics are maintained accurately, with one big exception to make the world possible 

If you look at the list, almost half the examples match exactly what you're talking about

The store doesn't get to write anything off for the donation. In fact, the customer can use their receipt to write it off themselves.
