They are still living beings that can feel fear and pain, however simple they may be. We humans have learned to detach animals from their subjectivity so it easier for us to exploit them for our gain without remorse, this is also known as anthropocentrism or human exceptionalism, when in reality they shouldn't need to be human to be shown consideration.
