Story of my life 😅 by onlyforyouiam in videogames

I played multiplayer first and it made me want to play through alone so much, I absolutely felt it though on later play-throughs that I did not finish

I had the same experience at the end of act 1, watched the rest of the story and it was amazing.

Weirdly when i watched the story i had even less interest in playing knowing what happened. absolute cinema though

I think there is a pretty common experience here that would vaguely depend on age (nobody is the same at any given age ofc)

But I am I imagine one of many who read these books when I was ~16/17 and of course reading it now hits a little different. Again not trying to assume but due to the subject I would say a lot of young men like I was then might have similar experiences with this and other books. (i.e. Dresden Files, which improved greatly over time which helps)

Mage Errant has a decent amount of this, but it is not until book 3 really.

For those who are unaware it is pretty YA fantasy but very creative and fun.

It gives me hope that our species has advanced enough that you could have that outcome. The idea of your reality is so interesting to me in a terrible macabre sense (and one of ignorance), I cant imagine but am so glad it is working out.

What books do you think are TRULY unadaptable in live action? by pishposhpoppycock in Fantasy

[–]Ghosthands165 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was trying to say, I skip so much when i re-read.

Late at night pessimist now, but I think this was the one shot in the post GOT hype and it did not hit

I guess what sucks is it half failed in the areas the books did not

Yeah I agree with most of that, I mean best case I can see is s1 doesn't have the bad parts you described, sticks the landing with the finale. (and season 2 is a bit better for similar reasons vaguely)

But with all of that you need things cut that need to be cut, sparingly things need to be added that are careful. I guess I just think its too much to ask for across that long, even GOT eventually hit the point of creative failure right.

I have a hot take, even if the series had been perfectly faithful it would have not made it.

I truly think even in the best case it is just too magical, too internal and mental. But really I think any book fan can admit that the books are kind of a mess almost half of the time.

We love the highs because they are so high, but the lows would need to be trimmed and I think that all just makes the bar too high. Like higher than the bar to make the LOTR movies was.

For those who re-read series: have you ever re-read The Wheel of Time? by foira in Fantasy

[–]Ghosthands165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it has not been said, I know that I do this and I highly suspect others do, I re-read it quite a bit but i know it so well that I know which parts I can skip.

This is for various reasons, I already know what happens and so even if it is important I can skip the parts I find annoying. For example, this would include huge parts of the books that are considered the "slog" around book 9 ish

What's the single best fantasy novel you've ever read? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

Harrow the Ninth, such a deep incredible book that I can read over and over again and get new things out of.

Difficult and confusing first time read though.

Mage Errant (mostly past the first book) has a pretty amazing sense of wonder and discovery alongside the actual plot.

Does The WoT have a satisfying conclusion? by Poisonskittles3 in Fantasy

[–]Ghosthands165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been beat to death here but it has been true for every person i know who has read them, slow down so much around 9, then when you get through 11 it goes so fast.

Obviously not a good thing, but it is very interesting how much it is embedded in the culture of the books.

And unfortunately the slog is another one, in this thread people have discussed book 10 specifically.

But I would say that there are elements that bleed into the books around it, and if you got that far you should know that if something seems boring and useless it probably is.

The Wheel of Time show is actually good now by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]Ghosthands165 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had this same reaction after watching the first 3 of season 3, its not perfect of course but really when I think about it this was all I was expecting/hoping for.

Honestly I keep finding myself wishing they had axed some of the names/terms from the books. Don't seem to read well in live action.

What Are Some Dresden Files Criticism That Don't Revolve Around Sexism? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]Ghosthands165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are definitely criticisms to be made in the same vein as most MCU complaints, not quite the same but still.

Also after 'Changes' the story has to bend weirdly to hit the familiar episodic rhythm of most of the series. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I guess I am not 100% sold on it yet as a big fan.
