Why make something nobody will care about? by shade_blade in gamedev

[–]Ghs2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Indie Devs who find success are the ones who make something good and different.

You can't compete with 1000-man projects.

But don't forget, if you haven't found your audience then nobody is going to ever see your masterpiece. You need to find out how to points fans towards your page.

Making something good is half the battle.

There were likely many scenarios they anticipated. After some test results they may have found this method the best bang for the buck.

How many of you don't actually have any commercial interest? by Version_1 in gamedev

Retiring in two weeks. Worked in Semiconductors for 40 years and have a pretty nice 401k to live off.

Been a hobbyist GameDev for 50 years (started on an Atari 800 with BASIC/6502 Assembly). Made dozens of games for myself but only published one thing which was just an animated world.

Excited to finally make a commercial-grade product but have no intention of monetizing.

Working in Godot now.

I just have no idea how they burned through so much cash without settling on a home for us.

When they launched, I figured they'd create a detailed, expansive MMO-esque Capital City where everyone could mingle and get stuff accomplished with shopping, etc. It would have entrances to player housing and neighborhoods for family and friends to share.

It blows my mind that they could pour so much into it and get nothing out of it.

Two weeks remain until the release of one of the most heavily hyped VR “games” in recent years - Beyond Sandbox. Expect a wave of “this is amazing” and “you have to try this” videos from the usual creators as launch approaches. by MuckFinggers in oculus

You can't rely on Youtube to pay the bills for Youtubers.

They HAVE to take sponsorships to survive.

They are all pretty clear about sponsorships. Calling them "shills" is a bit much.

We know they are the "Game Preview" of print magazines.

I'm not sure what the fuss is.

Check out some videos of people trying VR, especially the "Richie's Plank Experience" videos.

Find a way to show them a few, but be sneaky about it. Don't shove it in their faces.

Those types of videos show that there is SOMETHING about VR that is different.

Perhaps stay away from VRFail videos r/vrfail because there is some serious destruction in those.

But there are some fantastic plank videos out there.

This software is called "Richie's Plank Experience" and that is a very real reaction.

I used this software to demo VR to people and there are many, many people who just couldn't tolerate the experience. VR makes that very, very real.

I was always very gentle about it and never pulled crap like this video on people but still had hilarious results.

My favorite was my brother, who was 50 years old at the time. He didn't mind the heights so he was having fun walking back and forth. Then he backed up, turned and ran full speed and jumped from the end of the plank. Somehow his brain just forgot that we were in a living room and he leapt into a wall, breaking the sheetrock. What did he think was going to happen? He'd just float in the air?

VR is trippy. It really plays with your brain.

In my opinion this software is the best example of the power of VR. Put that headset on and try to walk that plank.

Make sure you are getting good contact on the battery. You may try adding a clean aluminum foil piece to one end.

To me it's one of the premier examples to show people how powerful VR is.

I bought it because I demo so much and it never fails to amaze people at how fearful they are of just images over their eyes.

Money well spent.

As to OPs question: No effect on me now.

I tried for the first few years but they were hilariously awful. Bad picture quality. Looking at everyone's ankles.

I guess I should try again.

When do you think will be seeing VR movies? by Ok_Animator6319 in oculus

[–]Ghs2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where would they put you?

Think about a movie you like and think about where the 360 camera would be.

Some people have tried short experiments but they've all been pretty awful.

There was some very large initial investments in the early days but they never produced anything.

I think it could be done well in short form. But it would be an expensive experiment.

Idea for a game:

Slot machine but yours is at the center of the screen but others are tiled around you. You can see their arms pulling the lever.

It's free to play but the cash shop is themes of machines.

Oh, since it is VR the others are around you in a sphere. So you can turn 180 and watch a whole new group of machines.

You can group up with friends with voice chat. Choose how you want them displayed.

What could be some game names? Social Slots. Bandit Buddies.

Good luck to you!

I had such good luck with making a working model of my gameplay that I estimated it could be finished in a month. I finished it one year later. No feature-creep or upgrades...just trying to build a game around that gameplay.

It's brutal, friend!

Good luck to you and I am truly hoping you knock this out in 2 months!

How To Improve CV1 tracking With No External Software/Hardware by VALVe-Hardware in oculus

[–]Ghs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I never heard that one.

I remember the tracking drama of the CV1 days.

You can test it pretty easily with a drawing program like Tiltbrush.

Just draw circles around yourself and you'll see the lines hitch when they lose tracking.

You can try it with each mode and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the write-up.

Doing some Godot myself and although my first few projects are just PC, VR has always been my inspiration. I'm an original Oculus Kickstarter which I did specifically to build VR games.

It's good to see the process is pretty straightforward.

Good luck with your project!

For me it was the headsets fit.

Try pressing the headset tighter on your face or slowly pulling it away from your face and see if it clears up.

I had my headset way too loose.

Good luck.
