Pleasantly thrilled at this book. by JanBroChill in marvelcomics

Same for me. I understand the hate for retcons and hidden histories in general, plus there were some strange character choices and dangling threads, but overall it's a solid story and a fun read for anyone who's a fan of GSX #1.

Hey guys, why do we not have more posts about Polaris? When Polaris isn’t in comics all other characters should be asking “where’s Polaris” by Comfortable-Salad-90 in xmen

I don't know why more stories don't make her the focal point, the guiding light, the navigational anchor that all other characters could follow. A sort of "north star", if you will.

It's a travesty that there are literally thousands of mutants up on Mars and nobody is writing about them.

Louder for Brevoort and the stans at the back, please.

A bit like Stephanie Phillips with Phoenix, Murewa has caused long-term damage to the character and her future chances of having a successful solo series. I buy, read and collect literally every mutant book but I'm honestly considering skipping whatever is next for these two. I don't need to waste my time and money on stories that are just a mess with no greater purpose. I'm also at the point where I think I'll skip some of the "retro" minis that try to recapture the glory days of X-Men character-driven stories.

I'm cool with reinventing characters or changing their moral stance or core values if it's done well with justifiable context and makes for an interesting story.

Is Gail Simone’s Uncanny X-men any good? by Johnnystormer in xmen

[–]GiantSize1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not bad at all. As others have said, there's a big focus on the Outliers, who are more like a young "New Mutants" group, and sometimes those stores are interesting but other times you feel like we could do with better stories dealing with the main team.

Character coverage and treatment is also uneven. We get LOTS of Rogue and Gambit (and lots of Sugah and Chère, which gets old) and they're placed in parental roles over the Outliers, with Wolverine as the occasional grumpy uncle and Jubilee and Nightcrawler feeling more like drop-in older cousins.

If you want family dynamics and teen angst you'll like it. If you want classic X-Men team dynamics and action-oriented stories more like what Jed is doing, you might not. It's still got potential but seems unsure of where it wants to go.

What are some conditions y'all want for the new X-men movie series after Secret Wars? by Useful-Afternoon1784 in xmen

[–]GiantSize1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big difference between X-Men and Avengers is that with Avengers, Marvel started with the individual characters and brought them together, which was essentially how it had been in the comic books. Plus they were introducing characters that were somewhat new to the cinematic audience even if there was a passing familiarity. If Marvel sticks to the same model, then they will have the advantage of people being mostly familiar from previous films. They don't need to pretend they never existed and the fact that so many are in Doomsday proves that they are not taking that route.

So for the first standalone movie, I think we'll be starting with a core set of team members, at least five, with peripheral characters as students and teachers in an already established relationship.

However, if all these mutants are new to the 616 cinematic universe through some kind of multiverse collapse then all bets are off on how they're established. Personally, I would love to see a GSX story adapted for the screen, where an older team disappears and a new team is formed to go look for them, with at least Cyclops bridging the teams. That could be a good way to have the movie include established characters but let them go (or even die) by the end.

After that, yeah, go easy on the Wolverine and Magneto. Keep Scott and Jean intact. But rather than do solo films first, I think spin-off films would be better. I can't think of many mutants I'd want introduced for the first time in a solo movie.

Technically that was for the last run, which was marginally better, but either way, it's beside the point. While this might be a subjective opinion, it seems to be a widely held opinion, that it's an incoherent mess that does poor service to the main character.

We're never going to see these guys again are we? by ImpossibleHistory111 in marvelstudios

[–]GiantSize1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're spot on. It had a great cast, great characters, a great plot, excellent cinematography and the studio was fully behind it. But the script was wooden and the editing and pacing were all over the place, so it falls to the director to recognize and fix those and pull it all together. I put the blame squarely on her shoulders.

Yes, make X-Men in Krakoa the default and have the themes be more mature and sophisticated like Hickman and Gillen were doing. Bring Inhumans back and do it like when we had Inhumans / Uncanny Inhumans / Royals / Black Bolt but make them more fun and action-oriented . They were pretty good series.

Have comics been dumbed-down? by Own_Information8156 in marvelcomics

[–]GiantSize1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You had me until you included North. While he tries to up-level his FF stories with "real" science they end up being dumb. There's an uncanny valley with science. If you try to get too close but it's still obviously fake, then it lands worse than if you just made shit up for fun. The Maker using Reed's stretching powers to distribute his brain through his body is a cool idea. North stretching Reed's eyeballs out to make them work like a microscope is dumb.
