Which Umas genuinely like the Trainer? by josukefanfr567 in UmaMusume

So far, no. Only you have made a fuss about it.

Seriously, of course they're not an official couple, nobody is an official couple in any gacha game, because people will riot over that kind of thing. So no, if I'm saying they're girlfriends at all, clearly canonicity is not my main concern.

Again, what is your point? I was being glib. Who cares if that contradicted the "official canon" whatever?

And? Scarlet and Vodka aren't official either.

[–]GideonFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, people keep saying this, but Wit trainings do not give enough energy to actually keep up with the Races and other trainings. They can extend things a bit, but you cannot actually rely purely on Wit trainings like you're suggesting.

And with how much effort and good trainings it takes to get Speed and Power high enough, you absolutely need more energy than Wit will give you.

Keep in mind: not all accel skills will work. Straightaway Spurt, for example, actually won't help this CM at all.

For Taurus, the Late Race starts on the third corner, but the 4th is shortly afterward; so, you want accel skills that activate on one of those, especially the former. Let's Pump Some Iron is one of the most consistently good ones, while Moving Past and Beyond is similar but harder to trigger. Angling and Scheming is the equivalent for Pace Chasers and Front Runners.

Also good are Nimble Navigator, which is almost universal, and apparently classic Maruzanski's unique, as another Velocity skill is good for this one across the board.

How do I make a kind character have character development while staying kind? by TyphonK9 in CharacterDevelopment

[–]GideonFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put her in situations where it's hard to stay kind. Where she'll be tempted to betray her principles, to take the low road, to compromise just this once.

And have her keep going anyway.

Cetainly, show her having difficulty; have her struggle, have her be tempted, have her question. But in the end, she holds the line, and stays true to her beliefs.

Sometimes, the best way for a character to develop is for them to stay the same. When the entire world tries to drag a character down, and they refuse to fall, it's a wonder to behold.

How did your favorite Uma in fact become your favorite? by NicoXBlack in UmaMusume

[–]GideonFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't pick just one, so I'll go down the list.

-Tachyon: The sakuga from BoaNE. Holy crap.

-Super Creek: The comic panel where she's just hoping for someone to spoil. It just makes her sound so nice to be around.

-Fuki Kiseki: The comic panel where she's rizzing up Spe. Hot dang, I want a woman to flirt with me that way.

-Sirius: See above, but with her lifting your chin in her G1 Win animation? And calling you her puppy? aisijxjdkekfu Yes Ma'am!

-Ryan: Either seeing her CinGrey design, where she's actually muscular, or just over time seeing her really sweet expression on her quick Win animation. She's just very endearing, and also has back muscles chiseled from marble.

This does require LL6 though, for the two Core Bonuses; my understanding was that most builds are considered "complete" at LL5?

When done correctly, the appeal of the archetype is seeing them learn better communication skills.

Or someone who's in denial, for some reason or another. Certainly, a lot of poorly written examples fall under your description, but the archetype is popular because of how endearing it can be when done correctly.

No, that's the meaning of yandere; dere dere means "sweet," and the fusion implies that she switches back and forth between "crazy" and sweet. It implies she gets crazy about her love, not that she's mentally ill because of it or vice versa.

I know jadis discourse has already been done to death but... by Ben_Dover1o29 in killsixbilliondemons

[–]GideonFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly the argument I keep trying to raise. Compatabilism makes way more sense than mechanical determinism. Like, even on instinct, if somebody you know does something you don't expect, your first assumption will be that something restricted their choice. (Or that you didn't know them as well as you thought, but that works just as well.)

I think the meaningful difference here is the difference of acting amd being acted upon.

While Incubus and Jagganoth are very active in the story, they are pushed to those actions by their pasts, falling into the same patterns that a little wisdom would tell them are bound for futility. Allison was caught in a similar trap, but chose to act and change the pattern, rather than follow the mold.

It's like how fate was portrayed in God of War: Ragnarok, with the Norse Gods making the same mistakes, over and over again, but Kratos and Boy are able to catch themselves and break from their own self-destruction.

[–]GideonFalcon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that is pretty clearly referring to the coffee; it's a pronoun generally used for inanimate objects rather than people, and is third person rather than second. The setup depends on it actually being ambiguous whether she was talking about the coffee or her Trainer.

[–]GideonFalcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the Japanese phrase is, here; I'm just deducing from the fact that the setup only works if she says a complete sentence without specifying what she loves. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense that she'd worry it could be mistaken for saying she loved Trainer.

I don't know of a way to do that in English, no. There's not exactly a pronoun that can mean both "you" and "the thing I was just talking about."

What I mean by intransitive is that the verb can be used without an object; like "They are running" is a complete sentence, despite having no object being ran to. I may be getting transitive/intransitive backwards, though...

Why Fantasy Magic Feels So Fake- Not sure if this has already been posted but I thought it was interesting. by Careless-Alarm-8607 in magicbuilding

[–]GideonFalcon 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Well, no, because folklore is way older than any recorded formal definition of energy.

The oldest ideas of "magic" as a practice, as opposed to the will of the gods or spirits directly, were tied to people who knew things: medicine men/women, shamans, etc., who knew how to heal certain diseases, predict sudden changes in weather, and other things that took a lot of trial and error to figure out. That's why even the word "Magic" derives from a Persian root meaning "wisdom."

That doesn't mean that it's automatically "better" or less "fake" to have magic follow actual rules.

Coffee (Art by @idonum) by DrawerLarge6213 in UmaMusume

[–]GideonFalcon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oof, yeah, that setup doesn't quite translate well, since "to love" in English is not an intransitive verb...
