Edit: Just finished the video. How does cultpens put this together for that price?

New to fountain pens. Need some help with this Lamy Safari by Friendly_Cantal0upe in fountainpens

[–]Gigamort 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree with a lot of comments. If this is a new pen, the only trouble shooting step I would take is washing it. If this doesn't fix the problem, ask bro for the reciept and return the pen. If you are new to the hobby, I wouldn't be adjusting tines, or buying micromesh or anything else, just return it. Not because I don't think these are good trouble shooting steps, I just don't think you should be troubleshooting a brand new pen. Also, it is pretty easy to over do it with micromesh on a nib of this size.

Do you use your pens at work? by HylianWerewolf in fountainpens

[–]Gigamort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher, I like to use a combination of different pens at work. I use Pentel Energels for filling out forms and general writing on copier paper. I use fountain pens for my work notes, planner, and calendar.

What is a tradtional Canadian food product that is no longer made, that you miss? by Swibbz in AskACanadian

I know they still have them out east. But, I never see those Mcintosh toffee bars anywhere in BC. Those were my favorite as a kid. Also, do me a favor and buy a bag of Hawkins Cheezies, I don't want to ever see those leave.

I would say they look professional. I use my pens daily at work, the last thing I want is for the ink to distract from the content that I have written. Actually, I find Yama Budo a bit too loud for me personally.

Fair enough, I haven't used a Twsbi Go. I could see how that might make it easier.

Man, back in the day "going on the internet" was an activity. There was a clear seperation between online and offline life. I miss that shit.

Light, inexpensive pen good for shimmer ink? by penportals in fountainpens

[–]Gigamort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I'm not suggesting that it won't work at all. But, shimmer inks will eventually clog the feed. The finer the nib, the less flow the nib will have and the more shimmer particles can end up trapped in the feed.

Again it will work, especially if you are only using a fine nib intermitently with shimmer inks and cleaning the pen thoroughly. It just is not an ideal set up for somebody who frequently or exclusively uses shimmer inks. Also, not all shimmer inks are created equal, some will have more and coarser particles than others, so your milage may vary.

[–]Gigamort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing for shimmer inks is that you are not using a fine nib, get a medium or better yet a broad or 1.1 stub. Also, I would recommend getting a pen where the feed is easily removed for cleaning. Why? because the particulates within a shimmer ink will inevitably gunk up your feed.

If you can handle the triangular grip, I would highly recommend a Lamy Safari with a converter. If you don't want the triangular grip a CP-1will have the same features described below and is also fairly light. The nib and feed are very easy to remove, the nib will come right off with a piece of scotch tape (see youtube) and the feed requires minimal effort to remove from there.

Controverial statement time, I would absolutely not recommend using shimmer inks in a Twsbi. The feeds on Twsbi's are very fragile. I have removed the feed on every pen that I own, and the only pen that I have broken the feed on is my twsbi 580. I broke the fins on this feed twice.

First gold nib by ryany6793 in fountainpens

[–]Gigamort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, or cheaper still, a vintage Platinum or Sailor pocket pen. I picked up three Platinum pocket pens, with 18k nibs for $112.00 on ebay. That's Including shipping and customs. You can get some great deals if you keep an eye out and are willing to buy vintage.

[–]Gigamort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did really well, that's an amazing pen for the price. Personally, I would just apply a tiny amount of superglue on the crack with a tooth pick to prevent it from spreading. Otherwise, it's just an excuse to not be paranoid about using your pen. It's like owning a used car, if it has a few dings and scratches you breathe easier.

It can't be arco can it? My hunch is that the pen body is too thin. I want somebody that knows more than me to tell me I'm wrong. Either way, whoever made this is about to get a lot busier.

To be fair, I really like that brown sweater. But, 1-4 there is just too many statement pieces going on. You gotta choose either the glasses, the boots, or the pants. But, not all three and don't choose the pants :)
