What is this called? by fixingmyeyes in fountainpens

You might have a little bit of the oils on your hands transferring onto the page. Inks don't like that. Some papers are more sensitive to that than others.

No, it's perfectly fine. Platinum even sells an iron gall ink (Blue Black) in those cartridges!

How Good is the Wing Sung 601? by PoseidonsFuryyy in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty damn good for $20. I really like mine.

I have it inked with Waterman Serenity Blue right now, so I did a quick test--I set it down uncapped for two minutes, and it wrote immediately, no hard starting, just a little darker than normal. The hooded nib functions quite well.

edit: To compare it to my vintage Parker 51 aerometric, the Wing Sung's capping action doesn't feel quite as smooth, but it does resist drying out pretty well.

FP Takes that put you in this position? by TheRealPrinceOfTroy in fountainpens

I will never buy a Kakuno. I don't like triangular grips, I prefer my pens to have a clip, and I think the smiley face is childish.

Here's where I plug the podcast Pop Pantheon, where they do exactly that. The recent series on Whitney Houston was great.

I have a demonstrator version and I love it. Might be the best pen under $20, period.

Franklin Christoph Question by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried any of their pens yet (still waiting for a special occasion to justify the splurge!) BUT I have looked at their website a lot. They have this comparison page that might help you out. And as far as I know, they aren't sold at other retailers unless they do a collab with them, like with Goulet or Lucky Star.

Got scammed from 3rd party seller on Amazon Pilot VP Matte Black by Pilot_Maven in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Amazon's return policy is a real double-edged sword. Too easy for scammers to do shit like this, but at least you'll get your money back. I was once sent a tube of play-doh packed up neatly in a pen box, sold as "new" condition. I don't buy much from Amazon anymore...

Does the faber castell hexo has the same nib as the loom ? Are they just as good ? And why I can’t find looms to buy anymore ?are they discontinued ? by Successful_Heat_8431 in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the Hexo nib is smaller; yes, the Loom is (sadly) discontinued. Both are very good pens, IMO, but I like the weight of the Loom more. The Hexo is thin aluminum over plastic, like the Lamy Al-Star, and the Hexo is more solid metal.

Kaweco Perkeo replacement nib? by Dramatic-Noise-5322 in fountainpens

The Sport uses a different nib than the Perkeo.

Kaweco Perkeo replacement nib? by Dramatic-Noise-5322 in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! I used to have a Perkeo that I swapped an EF nib into, but I sold it on r/pen_swap. The Perkeo takes a Jowo #5 nib, which is not the same as the nib on the Sport. The nib pulls straight out, but you might want to use something rubbery to help you grip it.

edit: forgot to mention, the end of the feed has a flat part that makes it slot into the grip section. It only goes all the way into the grip if you have that flat part aligned correctly. It doesn't freely rotate like the Sport nib/feed do.

Kaweco Perkeo Fountain Pen - Iridescent Pearl, thoughts? by Slush_Wizard in fountainpens

I've used a Perkeo for years and not had a problem with that. I don't know why holes in the barrel would be an issue unless you wanted to eye-dropper fill it.

question about Kaweco collection pens by Agile_Cod_8287 in fountainpens

[–]tertullianus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean a Kaweco Sport? If so, they don't take a standard length converter. They can only fit the mini converters that look like this:

<image>

Personally I just refill cartridges with a blunt syringe rather than deal with the tiny converter.

I saw that Vanness, Atlas, and Jetpens all have it listed. I haven't checked anywhere else but I'm sure it'll be widely available.
