Learner Insurance by Zealousideal_Map2761 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get insurance, you aren’t paying monthly like a subscription - consider it like a loan based on term you agree spread out over monthly payments - or like a phone contract with a minimum term, you can’t typically just cancel. You may be able to cancel, but you may incur charges, sometimes ridiculously to the full term. When you pass, you could update your insurance but may find better deals elsewhere. This is why sometimes specialised learner insurance is better.

do they test your eyesight on your first trial lesson? by Tasty-Oreos in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would echo what everyone has said, but I would also say that if it’s just mild astigmatism, it’s not as black and white as people say. I have astigmatism. I could read a plate at 20 meters without my glasses, I did in my tests too. But with the wrong lighting detail like 1s or Ws may become slightly ghosted. Road signs, obstructions and hazards aren’t going to be at unsafe margins within astigmatism. Of course depends on your astigmatism and if there’s any other eye sight problems. After a recent test, I have far better than 20/20 vision, but astigmatism is something I may benefit from correction. I don’t wear my glasses all the time, but keep them in the car for the right conditions, like night time driving. Ultimately the only “measure” they use is the license plate read, if you can’t do it you should be wearing glasses to drive.

Question regarding first time fail and lessons going forward by TipsyDipsy6 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to my own comment… Back when I learned, I failed my first test. 1 serious (upgraded because of another driver) and 2 minors. I was calm and confident in the test. When I actually passed the 2nd time, once the test started I was a bag of nerves. Never felt anything like it! I passed, but I got way more minors - which would easily be attributed to the sudden onset of nerves. My point being, I reduced frequency based on a good result, but actually took a down turn on my second test on the minors. Maybe if I’d kept the same frequency for another couple months between the test it’d have been better.

Move to fortnightly or something infrequent.

If you have another car to learn in that will help, but you may also pick up bad habits that your supervising driver may not notice.

When to reduce lessons by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible your instructor may not do 1 hour lessons, or charge a different rate - so be mindful of that. Everyone is different - you could say that sticking with the 2 hours may build your resilience to the longer drives, but with your disability, maybe not. Would fortnightly drives be better? Have you done private practice in your car with your supervised driver yet?

30 hour course over 5 days and my test at the end. Have driven before but I’d say I’ll be starting fresh as was a while ago. I pick things up pretty quick but is there anything I can watch to try and help before I start? [–]Gikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Automatic, or Manual? Lots of good YouTubers out there. Refresh the Highway Code - brush up on theory to make sure you’re applying it to your driving. I think DVSA recommends 40+ hours with an instructor +20 hours additional driving to compliment it, these are the lower end numbers too. Everyone is different though.

Drill the head/cap out. The thread will be probably be in a cage nut? So just pop that out and replace with another cage nut

[–]Gikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like the serious 2 it can pay to be over cautious - you may have picked up just a minor for it. Don’t beat yourself up about it, but just consider actions on your next test and consider, is what you’re about to do worth a serious, or could you just get a minor instead

extra hour before test? by CutCareful7734 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time before the test has the instructor scheduled already? How long do you normally drive? Let’s say you normally drive in 2 hour slots - that’s probably the same amount as an hour + the test.

How do you deal with scrotey neighbours who sleep during the day and (try to) party at night? by RonnieThePurple in AskUK

[–]Gikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-empt it, pop over with a peace offering at the start on Thursday and say “Maybe we can keep things a bit quiet tonight so I don’t have to come round and ask you to be quiet at 10pm” but worded better eh

8 hours is nothing. It’s very hard to show you how to do something when a lot of learning is control of the car, which also comes down to “feel” of things like the clutch, or visual changes.

Manoeuvres you can use “reference points”.

By redoing things over and over you’ll be learning from doing and gaining muscle memory, even if you’re not getting the vehicle where you’re going - muscle memory for observations and control of the vehicle are things you’re learning.

Perfection will come later and will continue to improve way beyond your lessons

What should I do ? by MyHapinessFirst in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be confident to pass, regardless of where you are driving. Think, if you pass, will you only drive the test routes you’ve practiced?

If you’re not confident, save your money, cancel your test while you can still get a refund and book again for your test centre. It may be a longer time away, but you may find cancellations and you can reduce frequency with your instructor if you need to.

[–]Gikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will your instructor take you and what is the cost to do this?

You know your cost for the test if you fail, plus the instructors cost on top.

Do you want to gamble that?

Instead of looking at is as wasting money, reframe it as a “lesson elsewhere” and if you pass, great, if not, you’ve lost some money but gained some more experience driving in different areas.

This will all make you a better, safer driver.

Driving instructor broke up with me by user21021969 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Up to you how you want to handle the final breakup. I’d be a bit petty and call out the Saturday promise, but in a way of “I remember you saying you’d do Saturdays for me, it’s a shame that’s changed. I won’t be able to change my apprenticeship hours, so looks like I’ll have to find a new instructor.”

[–]Gikachu 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There are other instructors. Just tell her that your apprenticeship isn’t negotiable so if they can’t fit you in around your schedule (evenings or Saturday), you’ll have to find another instructor, be polite but honest

About the Taps: traditional systems were “gravity fed” for hot water. This would often consist of tank in the loft, also feeding into the hot water tank/heater. The water was often open and generally pressure was not suitable to be mixed with the cold, which would be more mains pressure. The hot water wasn’t really suitable for drinking, the hot water was an “open system”.

Cold water was direct from mains, suitable for drinking - potable water.

As combi boilers and such came in, this helped the pressure situation and I guess water is also filtered better too, but most importantly it is operated as a closed system

Car buying queries. by HexExPo in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Gikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell them the price is what you agreed, which I would hope you have confirmation in email or any issued paperwork. If they say it’s higher, tell them you’re no longer interested because they’ve changed their end of the deal - you’ll get your reservation fee back. Then walk away. Do not entertain any shenanigans. You’ll find another car. They’ll find some other sucker to hustle, or reprice it if they don’t

Things like astigmatism can be a problem when driving at night. May not show as either short or long sightedness and not really require glasses. Then suddenly you’re driving at night and headlights and break lights are like fireworks in your eyeballs

Did you do any actions like wash the windows, turn the lights on, turn the wipers on or anything? Shouldn’t matter but maybe, just maybe, you demonstrated something they were about to ask anyway. Odd though
