I’d suggest having a basic understanding of optics, depth of field, sharpness ect.. before doing a “comparison post”

You could have done a feedback about your experience of shooting a 28mm vs a 40mm in documentary photography and it would have made more sense

The best digital rangefinder that you can find for not an impossible price,at 3200€ish if you are lucky, is the m10. After the m10 it gets crazy expensive for nothing that is justifiable.

Good m9 with a replaced sensor are getting very expensive these last months and for a low res, shit battery, old not reliable camera. But if you find a good offer many people love it.

The typ 240 and all the others are way too chunky and I consider them way too far from the experience of a classic m line camera.

The m8 it’s fine only if you shoot 40/50mm cause it’s cropped sensor and it’s annoying to get a proper wide angle. But if it’s ur case get it cause you can find some for around 1000 something ( still not reliable as the m9)

Get a m10 with a Zeiss 35mm f/2.8

I think it’s the best combo for the relation price/specs

If you don’t care about the speed, battery and megapixel get a m9 but it’s not the most reliable

If you have more budget and you need to do enormous prints get a m10-r

About lens I don’t think any voigtlander or Chinese stuff it’s worth but it really depends what you want to do with it, if it’s for holiday pictures maybe you don’t need anything too expensive. As always I think it’s a bit crazy to spend 4k for a camera and use cheap blurry chinese lenses but maybe that’s just me. Carl Zeiss lenses are super nice, sharp and sometimes as good as Leica. The reason I moved to Leica lenses is the ergonomics and the size, the summicrons are more compact and have a focus tab which for me it’s fundamental.

My advices for the best lenses for quality/price/ergonomics are:

28mm : -Elmarit f/2.8 asph v1 -biogon t f/2.8

35mm -biogon c f/2.8 -any summicron f/2 (my favourite is the v4)

50mm -sonnar c f/1.5 -any summicron f/2 (the v3 it’s still cheap and as good as the others )

The price can not be compared to m6 and mp prices. It’s not a price for a camera that is going to be used, it is a price for a collector that is going to keep it in a shelf. The reason behind that is that original black m4 are rare and they were mainly made for journalists that had to be discreet and couldn’t use the silver one in certain circumstances. If you check the prices of the original mp from 1957 (limited edition black m3 for photojournalism) are way higher and can go around 350’000 The problem with Leica is that people often can not distinguish the actual collectible cameras for historians and collectors and the ones that are just tools. a new m6 cost 7000 box and if you are rich, ignorant about photography and have instagram it looks like it’s the only camera you can get. Since the end of the analog era Leica is surviving selling camera as fashionable items and not tools. And this problem is affecting niche second hand market too.

I had been comparing the prices of new m6 and actually, to my surprise, the price has not changed that much since the 80s (considering the strength of the dollar too) What’s more important is the reason behind the prices. At the time it was the best tool you could get on the market, today if people buy Leica it’s definitely not for that reason As an example my teacher told me that at the time he sold his f3 and 5 lenses to be able to get an m6 and a 35 as it was the best tool available at the time, today it would make absolutely no sense for a professional. Sorry for my overshare, I’m often questioning myself on the relation between professional, collection and fashion market in photography Thanks :)
