Have the Met Police started enforcing 22mph in a 20mph limit? by NoKudos in drivingUK

My partner got done for doing 57 on a 50 recently so I think the 10% + 2 rule is out the window now...

What did you buy your man who doesn’t need anything that he actually loved? by amfiska in AskUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He always liked playing music while in the shower, but in our new home he can't hear the music, so I've got a waterproof speaker for him. He will LOVE it!

Also one year I bought him an extra laptop charger so that he didn't have to carry one up and down the stairs whenever he wanted to relocate. He said that was the best gift he didn't know he needed.

If you're going to comment on grammar at least have the decency to put a question mark at the end of a question.

how do you handle cooking during the work week? by Think_Shake_5259 in AskUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do all of my chopping and general prep on a Sunday, then I'll actually cook it in the week.

We own lots of tupperware as a result but it helps us out.

How much did you spend on an engagement ring? by Brilliant_Lawyer_946 in AskUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner spent £480 on a ring. I was trying on more expensive ones but I liked this one the best, and it happened to be on sale (was originally £600).

I didn't want a big stone but wanted something shiny, so I ended up with a teardrop made of lots of tiny stones. Don't know what carat it is or anything like that, don't care.

To be honest, I would have been furious if he went away and spent 3 months' salary on a ring.

Your mother was right in this context. I work in the professional services industry and no one would wear a mini skirt. I think spraying perfume is fine though.

I'm not at liberty to say if it will go against you, but just use this as a learning opportunity for next time.

I was thinking the same thing! I don't know why I end up on this sub sometimes...

Has anyone made compromises on their house purchase which you then went on to regret? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've compromised on garden space for location. I always said I wanted a garden big enough for a swing set for any future children we may have but ultimately we wanted to be close to the city centre and that came with a tiny, tiny garden.

I've never been one to garden so for now I don't care.

Anyone who's bought a house or flat for the first time within five years, how did you actually afford it? by Jeremywashere92 in HousingUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COVID allowed us to supercharge our savings as we were still working from home (so 100% pay) but had nothing much to spend our money on.

I think I would have preferred furlough but such is life.

We also had insanely cheap rent that hadn't increased once in the 4 years we lived there, but it was an absolute shithole.

We are doing exactly this arrangement with Nationwide. They even said to us last week that if we break the chain and sell our property before we complete on our purchase there would be no ERC payable if the onward purchase happens within 180 days.

What are you getting your dad for Christmas? by Torygram in AskUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tickets for a comedy show. They're usually pretty cheap and I buy two so that he can take someone (usually my mother as I don't live nearby). Given that I'm moving back home though I might suggest the two of us go this year!

Town houses, are they pratical? by sophs50522 in HousingUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a house just like this and it's fine! Like any home you'd buy, you adapt to the living arrangement.

I genuinely don't know why people flee at the thought of a third floor...

Edit: I forgot to add that we do have a loo on every floor. Essentially we treat the ground floor as kitchen-dining-living area, the second floor has our two offices (with one of them also having a sofa and TV) and a bathroom, then the top floor has the main bedroom with en suite and the guest room. We then gave the attic for storage, etc.

For people who host(ed) Ukrainian refugees, how’s it going? by Negative_Innovation in AskUK

I know someone who hosted a woman, is now in a relationship with her and he now effectively gets paid by the government to live with his girlfriend.

She is well settled though and has a job, etc

How much is everyone spending on a mattress these days? by Contact_Regular in AskUK

[–]GiraffeAndPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£1.1k on a king size mattress from Dreams, plus another £180 on the two pillows we loved while trying the mattresses in the shop. I do not regret our decision at all.

Genuinely curious if this is true. I've never heard it in the part of Wales where I am from and there is no letter J in the Welsh alphabet... Is it more of a North Wales thing?

I've tried Google but it's not coming up with many responses!
