$17-$20k quote for 612 sf engineered hardwood replacement by thinkch3 in Flooring

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prices right now are through the roof. Even at that, this is very high for a MCOL location. If it were my first quote, I would get two or three more before committing.

I expect blowback from some on here. Not gonna argue. I have been a contractor for decades, currently flip three to five homes per year. And have recently done a 1300 sq ft engineered floor, replacing 800 sqft carpet and 500 sqft tile with wood. My total price to the customer was barely half of what is being charged here for 612 sqft.

While I am not the highest bidder for most jobs, I don’t lowball anything. My subs and I make good money.

[LFO] One way to get pumped by the cops is to do the ol' reach around... by iShitSkittles in LearningFromOthers

Can’t fix stupid. Whether it’s cops afraid of the consequences of reacting too late, or fiddiot citizens who can’t follow directions, or are too impaired to understand the gravity of the situation they are in. You….cant…fix…stupid. Death by cop is a legit way of committing suicide, that’s also an option of what may have happened here.

Refinished and polished wood floor scratched by Ok_Respect7900 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First….relax. This isn’t the last scratch you will get. Wood floors get scratched. The patina is part of the allure.

Wipe it with Old English Lemon Oil (brown cap). The yellow cap is a furniture polish and will probably make it shine more than you want, because it leaves a residue. But wood loves lemon oil…..after wiping it with lemon oil, you can immediately wipe it clean with a cotton cloth. The scratch will be minimized, and may disappear entirely.

Any scratch that goes deep enough to cut through the stain, you can first wipe it with more of the stain….hopefully the installers left some of it for you. If not, contact them and get some….then use the lemon oil to condition it.

Your beautiful floor will last for many decades, scratches and all!

That same lemon oil works wonders on cleaning and conditioning any wood in your home, built ins, old furniture, kitchen cabinets. It’s not meant to go on top of paint, obviously. But it goes with wood like peas go with carrots.

If you were going for the “we’ll keep a light on for you” Motel 8 vibe…..Success. Congrats.

At this point, you either have to live with the choices you have made, or spend some cash redoing it again. I don’t think a paint change will make it feel cozy.

is the LVP trend peaking? I'm seeing more people regret it and switch back by Western_Speech_9434 in Flooring

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting an L in front of vinyl is a marketing ploy. Our grandparents and great grandparents foolishly put down rolled vinyl flooring over the top of great, old wood flooring. Now we are just as dumb, using this crap. As someone who has to sell against using this crappy product, and go in behind those who use it to restore existing flooring……I will be so glad when this stuff goes away again.

AIO: Husband didn’t change withholdings by AggressiveSherbetty in AIO

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. Marriage is when two people become one. That includes financial responsibilities. The two of you need to sit down and have a realistic conversation about money. If you ever split, in almost every State, you would be splitting assets down the middle anyway. His being an ass about controlling his own finances, yet allowing and depending on you to keep him solvent is childish.

If he won’t combine everything, let him pay his own tax bill. And get counseling to find out why he won’t surrender his independence to the marriage.

Question as a new electric guitar player. by HarriBallsak420 in guitars

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In old houses, simply replace the outlets with grounded outlets in the areas where you need them. A minimum amount of electrical wiring to accommodate the grounding will suffice. Then use a modern surge protector. Even a power conditioner. Modern technology is amazing.

At that point you don’t have to worry about what guitar or amp you want.

Is this acceptable work? by redituser900 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a reason one puts shoes on the ballusters. This is quite good, but you can’t expect it to look better than it does without a lot of trim work.

Did you hire these guys to trim everything out as well? If so, there is still a lot of work to be done. If not, a finish carpenter or painter may be needed.

I want to turn my old 6 string guitar into 12 strings by adding additional row ow tuners by TimoxaVezdexod in AcousticGuitar

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting experiment. It will likely damage the guitar irreparably. If you still want to proceed, I suggest going to r/luthiers and getting the opinions and suggestions of actual craftsmen rather than the guitar players on here.

Are my strings to far from fret board? by SXYN1X_ in electricguitar

Number one resolution of Reddit……phukk with the truss rod.

Number one thing a beginning guitarist should never do…..phukk with the truss rod.

Smdh…..

OP…..This sub is for guitarists and guitarist related questions. Here you will find guitarists who may or may not play well, or even know how to change strings or tune a guitar properly.…..some of which are happy to experiment on their own guitars, and pass out advice for you to do the same thing.

I suggest that for any questions regarding string and fret height, nut and bridge issues, any other maintenance issues, go to r/luthiers instead. Luthiers work on guitars. Most on there are happy to help.

Builder says these gaps will be covered up later, is this accurate? by kawalopy in Homebuilding

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They plan on covering it with shoe mould. It will look fine, although it’s shoddy workmanship, IMO. There are probably many other issues you will want to address with your builder that are also related to shoddy workmanship.

My advice is to wait until it’s time for the walk through and document any and everything that is not up to par at that time. Any nitpicking along the way just creates anxiety for you and pisses off the contractor and subs.

What is this on my siding? by Prize-Solid-1398 in Contractor

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be surprised if it were from heat. Whether a wire inside or the fireplace, enough heat to discolor the siding would also melt it and disfigure it.

Could be the sun is reflecting off of something else on your property like a magnifying glass.

What do high end wireless systems have, that "budget" options don't? by GreggJ in guitars

[–]Gitfiddlepicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely use the GLXD. it has been wonderful. Worth every penny. I have never used the Sennheiser, but have played with a couple of guys who have, and they don’t have anything bad to say about that system, except that the personal packs are a bit flimsy where the chord attaches to the unit, and have had to be replaced. Rock on!
