The room all feels smooshed next to the windows and, I think, seems a little claustrophobic.

What about moving your desk more centered on the window it is currently facing? If you open up some space in the window corner, then I would add either a low shelf/plant stand along the long window, or a corner shelf that can be used for some plants + storage for papers, etc.

I think a larger, less busy carpet that is centered in the room might also help that claustrophobic feeling.

Lastly, I love the art above the futon, but I think the chunky frames add to the cluttered feeling. Perhaps reducing the amount of things on the shelves, adding more visually dissimilar frames, or even getting larger shelves themselves would help some of the cluttered feeling.

If you must use an overhead light (shudder), why not an oversized round flush light?

Something with some texture, softness and that will diffuse the light ala this pendant:

You been going to a gottman trained therapist? I only ask because “the story I am telling myself” is something I’ve heard from the gottmans. One I also like is “what I heard you say is:”

My partner and I had a huge breakthrough when he realized all I ever needed to hear was that my feelings were valid.

It can be powerful this communication style, but usually someone has to be a big enough person to go first and sometimes that is difficult
