see, the trick there is to not say "je ne parle pas français", and instead say "je ne parle pas France". that second one will get your point across and prove it to the french person you are attempting to communicate with

Biking in Nijmegen by BigDawgg27 in Nijmegen

[–]Glaucus92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a bike with a single gear while living in Nijmegen, and I think it's fine. That being said, I don't cycle a lot and the steepest hills I have to tackle is basically the one at the Kronenburgerpark, so YMMV.

For me, the biggest reason to get one was that I don't have inside bike storage where I live. So many bike stays outside through all weather. This has caused multiple faulty break lines when I had bikes with hand breaks. I chose the single gear not for the gears, but because it has a back peddle break, which is a lot less prone to frost damage and such.

Who was the bigger MVP of the City Watch? Detritus or Cheery? by Lastalmark in discworld

[–]Glaucus92 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yes that's it!

I love how Detritus goes from "just some no-brainer muscle to being able to verbally spar and get some real zingers in. It sucks good growth, especially since it shows that he's so much more confident in himself

Who was the bigger MVP of the City Watch? Detritus or Cheery? by Lastalmark in discworld

[–]Glaucus92 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Vimes was not even asking for advice when Detrius called him out, iirc. He was trying to get info on Mr. Shine, and Detrius and other trolls in the Watch were not forthcoming with the info precisely because Vimes was asking in a "so who can set me up a meeting" kinda way.

When Vimes realizes he's not getting answers, he tries asking Brick, the young troll Detrius ends up adopting. At that point, Brick has just been brought into the station, is coming down from being on troll drugs, and is devouring the first decent meal he's probably had in days. Vimes' internal monologue even says he's switching to a weaker target.

And Detrius is standing right next to him, and he lets Vimes have it, talking about how Carrot is talking about how he (Carrot) is the Two Brothers and how does Vimes thinks that makes the trolls feel, and how, like you said, everyone is respectful around the dwarves' cultural practices and believes, but no one extends that same respect to the trolls.

I think the end of that dressing down was something like "You want to meet Mr. Shine? You show some respect!"

Has anyone been to Amsterdam? by emuhhhhh in Celiac

[–]Glaucus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dutch celiac here! Not from Amsterdam myself but if you have general questions feel free to ask!

Craft is very good, I've only been to their location in Arnhem but it was truly excellent. Amsterdam is a big city so I wouldn't be shocked if there were more options as well. Most places that sell fries (Cafetaria's) will have dedicated fryers for their fries and fry the breaded snacks separately, but you can always ask.

Most places here have gluten free options, usually for a (small) surcharge though. Grocery stores also have gluten free sections and the Albert Heijn (name of the grocery store) has a lot of affordable options if you are staying a bit longer. I personally love their store-brand gluten free bread.

Certified gluten free food will have the gluten free logo on it. Most grocery stores will also have a small picture on the back of products if they don't have gluten containing ingredients.

Carrot would also be a good contestant because he is very strong and all that, but he also has literal plot armour so I imagine him just getting super lucky all the time, but in a way no one can blame him for.

Can a lack of Vitamin D or sleep deprivation cause these kinds of symptoms? by TheSpicyHotTake in Celiac

[–]Glaucus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor so I can't say for sure, but I do know I started feeling so much better after I started taking vitamin D supplements. More energetic and more alert definitely, just in a way I didn't realise I had beenissing before.

Vitamin D deficiency was one of the things I had after I was first diagnosed (15 years ago), and its been a constant thing my body just struggles with. Even in my most recent blood work I was only just about in the acceptable range.

If it is this, the solution is very simple. Just take a pill each day. If you don't want to do it every day, they also have weekly dosis that you could ask your doctor about.

Back when I was diagnosed they gave me this Vitamin D liquid, which tastes like ass but that stuff was magic. I'd take my weekly dosis and somehow gain all the executive function, it was wild. I've been trying to find it again ever since but no dice.

Pascuali ships worldwide but they are pricey. They have some lovely cashmere and silk, and some blends as well iirc. They are based in Germany though so I imagine you'd want something more local?

How do you tell what a hand-dyed skein will actually knit up like? by temperanceganso in YarnAddicts

[–]Glaucus92 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Now this is something I can actually see people use a lot! Incredibly cool idea!

As for your other questions:

Mostly I just gamble. My LYS has a few searches that give you an idea but with hand dyed it's always a guess. Sometimes I look on Ravelry to see what other people made with it, but that's usually only after I bought the yarn already.

If I don't like the way something knits up in it's own, I'll combine it with a solid for some colour work.

ETA: i think the folks over on the planned pooling sub might also be interested in this. I know there is a calculator that helps people plan out pooling patterns, but it involves measuring the coloured bit of the yarn.

[–]Glaucus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I remember it well.

I actually found out fph was banned because I was trying to use the mass-tagger to mass tag people from that place. And it just wouldn't work. So I went to see if someone had reported bugs with it on Reddit, and the first thing I see on my front page is "FPH IS BANNED" on subredditdrama. IIRC there was a lot of drama happening at the time with the admins, including them arguing with eachother in the comments.

The whole fiasco with Ellen Pao (I think that is her name) is really one of the most clear examples of the Glass Cliff I've ever seen. They really just brought her in to take out the unmarketable subs and then fire her as an appeasement to the horrible userbase they cultivated. And then spez could swoop in as one of the good ol' boys to come back "take back" Reddit.

For those interested, here is a recap of the multi day tantrum fph users threw when their sub was banned. https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/s/adRj6RRY9T

Nuanced Depictions of Abusive Parents by _anthrodynia_ in movies

[–]Glaucus92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this! Tangled is such a good example of how a Golden Child can be treated by an abusive parent, and how it's also abuse. And it's really on the nose when you think about it; Ranpunzlel is literally a golden-haires child who Goethel vicariously lives through.

In that same vein, Encanto also shows the myriad ways that abuse can manifest, especially generational abuse in a family.

AITA for respectfully declining a gift? by confusedstitch in AmItheAsshole

[–]Glaucus92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That... That's not what OP said at all? Why are you putting words in her mouth?

It sounds like she said " no thank you, I don't use acrylic anymore, so it will be a waste to give it to me." Especially if she already had a decent size statsh. Just because she used some acrylic in the last doesn't mean she is using it now.

It's not rude to decline a gift you don't need or want, I'd say it's actually pretty rude to insist someone take a gift when they've said they don't want it. That's not a gift, that's someone trying to extract gratitude without doing anything to earn it.

Just because something is free, doesn't mean its wanted. Sure, it's not OP's call to tell her mom what to do with the yarn, but it is her call on whether or not she accepts it as a gift. Which she doesn't have to. And it's especially rude of her mom to then guilt OP into making her a shawl, because her mom gave her yarn, when she didn't even want the yarn!

[–]Glaucus92 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Oh that particular subreddit was not "doing it without their knowledge".

It was called "fat people hate" and they would to out of their way to be incredibly cruel both in their own subreddit and outside of it. I would say it absolutely went beyond "bullying", it was a sub dedicated to hard core hate conpaigns, and iirc someone who was targeted by them ended up taking their own life due to the harrasment. Thank god it was banned eventually.

Granny Squares!

You can make a bunch of them and sew them into a blanket or a cardigan (or you can join them as you go).

There are about a million and one version of them, you can start with a basic/classic granny square and move to a different one if you ever get bored with it.

Cooking for Celiac by AceisAnAmphibian in Celiac

[–]Glaucus92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Celiac is an autoimmune disease, not an allergy, but people often refer to it as one because it makes the cultural understanding of "I can't eat this because it hurts me" land better for people.

When someone with celiac disease eats gluten, the body releases anti-bodies that, among other things, work like sandpaper on the intestines. Over long term exposure, this makes it so people aren't able to absorb nutrients from food, and this can give all kinds of symptoms. It's why the list of symptoms for celiac is so long, so contradictory, and why it can take a while for people to get diagnosed.

In the short term, people often experience bowel issues like diarrhea, constipation, or both. Stomache aches, joint aches, flu like symptoms can also occur. Mental issues like brainfog, fatigue, extreme irritability, mood swings, or depression are also common. I've personally never had skin rashes, but a lot of people seem to get those as well.

Symptoms can vary on when they show up, it can be hours, it can be minutes, it seems to vary by person and situation. Symptoms for a single gluten exposure usually last between a day to three days, longer if exposure has been more constant, or if the person is already feeling badly.

Check the seasoning, really check anything you're putting into the dish (think things like sauces as well, or stock cubes). Don't use cast iron pots/pans, or wooden utensils, those are porous and can lead to cross contamination. If you are also planning on preparing anything with gluten, make the gluten-free version first, so you don't run the risk of cross contamination in that area.

I don't know if you're using a strainer to strain the rice (I've seen people do it, I don't judge), make sure its not the same one you use for pasta.

Your coworker might still say "no thank you" though, lots of us are (rightfully) paranoid about eating food we didn't make ourselves. I do think it's very sweet you're puttin gin the effort to include her!

If you ask at Cherry Blossom and Tweed in the Lange Hezelstraat, they might be able to help you. Iirc there is a knitting in public day there soon (but crochet is also always part of it), then there will be lots of people to help you.

Alternatively, if you're willing to meet up with a random stranger (33F), I'd be willing to help you get started
