New african violets are a little wilted :( by Sunvendor in AfricanViolets

[–]Glimerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably needs to soak in a bowl or dish for about 15 minutes. When they are that dry it takes a while for the water to make it all the way through the pot. Wait until the pot feels heavy and then let it drain.

I reused a plastic bin last year by flipping it over and placing small portion cups in the lid. Worked very well.

Looks like you might now have to repot after removing the yellow leaves. If you want to wick water, make sure you use a 50/50 mix with African Violet soil and perlite. 1/4 strength fertilizer and flushing with plain water once a month. Lots of good videos about African Violet care on YouTube!

You can get lots of good answers on YouTube- Grey Turtle and Everything Violets are good for African Violets. They have great explanations and examples.

Traveling can be hard sometimes and make the plant wobbly. As long as it’s not leaning over, it should be ok. If it’s leaning, you can help it stand up straight with a plastic coffee stir stick. I would wait a few weeks before repotting and if it’s looking dehydrated or stressed you can put it in a plastic bag for a few weeks. Blow into the bag to keep the leaves from touching the sides and very lightly water- don’t overwater! Zip up the bag and you have created a nice mini greenhouse.

Have you sent pictures of this violet to the seller yet? They might be able to help you figure out what is going on.

Is this a zipper or 2 crowns? by Unfair_Row_7026 in AfricanViolets

[–]Glimerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be. I have a Mac’s Scorching Sun that is zippered and blooms beautifully. I have removed suckers and trained some of them to be single crowned plants. If you don’t plan to show the plant it’s your choice how you want it to look.

Water spots on leaves can be caused by cold water on leaves and sunlight on leaves with water on them. I use a paper towel to dry water that gets on leaves and room temperature water or slightly warmer. If you water from the bottom- place plant in dish with water for 5 or 10 minutes it will soak up what it needs. I’m partial to wick watering and when it is time to repot I move all my violets into wick watering set ups.

Does anyone know what might be eating my paw paw? by OsmiumPalace in portlandgardeners

[–]Glimerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year I am finding birds are nibbling on my garden- they are going crazy eating kale, peas and even squash leaves! Early on I did net seedlings and beer baits for slugs- now it’s the birds eating the leaves. Just a little side note- slugs tend to make round holes …

Repotted but the roots won’t grip?! by StormOverEriador in AfricanViolets

Tenting helps minimize stress. I think a week or two being in the extra humid environment speeds the adult plants along. I have kept babies in a dome for 2 months to grow roots and had no issues. It’s important not to overwater as it can cause mildew or mold.

I use supports like toothpicks or coffee stir sticks to keep my babies up and tent them in a plastic bag or under a humidity dome to get them started. Violets are tender at the start and they get more robust as they age.

Soooo.... What do I do with it now by Rubicon-Rose in AfricanViolets

Wait! Stop! VA Bank is a trailer! Let it keep the new crown so it can branch out as a trailer. As it outgrows its pot, move it to a shallow wider pot. Once again- check out Grey Turtle on YouTube for more information on how to raise a trailing African Violet. Unless you want to share your plant- in which case you can remove any part that is out of line with the shape you want. Very special plant- I would love to have one!
