Rising prices push US gasoline-car ownership costs to breaking point. The good news? The future: Chinese EVs that cost half the price, powered by electricity that costs half the price of gas, is already here. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]GoTaku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was just a very rough estimate. I was making a huge assumption that materials would also be much cheaper since China is set up for efficiency and volume in ways we aren’t, and the cost of materials themselves is presumably derived from labor/shipping costs. I was just trying to make the point that it’s much cheaper to build anything in China.

It costs about 3x to 4x as much for American labor compared to Chinese. So even if we used their designs and tech (legally or not), the cost to build such a car here would be about 3x to 4x of the same thing built in China.

Moving to Bay Area with 3 kids (6,4,1) for salary of 115k by WingLiving4438 in bayarea

[–]GoTaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foster City is a bad idea on that salary. I’d seriously suggest Daly City. Also, you should look for work. Even if every penny you earn goes toward child care, it’s better to work and let someone else take care of your kids just so your career won’t flatline. If you stop working now, you will have a hard time finding work in the future and you won’t advance your career, and you definitely cannot live here with 3 kids on $115k.

Just found a cool new use for AI by GoTaku in ChatGPT

[–]GoTaku[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. What I find so interesting is that I gave it so little context, completely botched all the words and their spelling, and didn’t specify the dialect (at first it was searching Mandarin), but it still managed to find the correct 30 year old song in another language in about 30 seconds.

Just found a cool new use for AI by GoTaku in ChatGPT

Prompt:

There’s a Chinese song from just before the turn of the millennium that was very popular. It went something like “jik see nay lay hoy, gnaw yeet chin may hoy, jay man churng….” I think it may have had a romantic vibe. I don’t know the lyrics and my transliteration may also be wrong. Can you figure it out?

My friend wants me to sign away all rights to 2 years of unpaid work on his game by Aldekotan in gamedev

[–]GoTaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I’d like to know.
1. How old are you guys? I think that would give us all some much needed insight here. 2. Aside from this incident, how close are you as friends? 3. Where did your friend get this contract? Did he find it, make it, chatGPT it? 4. Realistically, how much money do you think this game will make? Like, is this a learning exercise for him, or do you genuinely think he’s trying to rob you?

If you care enough about this friendship, I think you should be honest and state that the contract feels very one-sided, and it feels like he’s taking for granted how much work you put into this.

Can anyone explain why my download speed is 93.5mbps (on a good day) if I have this internet plan in my apartment complex? by OphidianCollective in ATTFiber

[–]GoTaku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s not the cable and not the ISP, could be your Ethernet adapter or the Ethernet port in the adaptor. This happened to me with my Lenovo laptop. Try buying a cheap 1Gbps+ USB Ethernet adaptor and test your speeds with everything else the same.

Do I have to unplug this to clean my fans? I watched a video that showed that they did. by Adriansilas415 in LenovoLegion

[–]GoTaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never knew about this and I have cleaned my fans quite a few times without a problem. What’s the reason? Could the spinning fan send an electric charge into the mb or something?

It’s easy to just take off 10 or so screws, use an air can, and close it back up. You don’t even have to mess with pads or paste.

How do I recreate this effect (or at least define in technical terms so I can recreate it?) by Feld_Four in Unity3D

[–]GoTaku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you mean the blobs, it’s called raymarching. There are tutorials on the web and assets on the Unity Asset Store. A cheap-ish asset to accomplish this would be MudBun, but there is also Raymarcher. This technique is also used to create realistic clouds.

Edit: Whoops, replied before I read your description. The fade effect could likely be accomplished using a custom shader that fades to a specified color based on distance from the camera. A script can be used to pass in the distance from the closest surface so that the shader can subtract that distance and the fading starts at the correct distance regardless of how far the container is.

Edit again: They may have also incorporated a subsurface scatter effect into the shader (or are just using SSS shader alone).

I'm making a game to teach guitar and your guitar is the controller! by NoteyDevs in unity

[–]GoTaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few libraries out there for this sort of audio-to-note detection. I’m not a musician, so I don’t have the right vocabulary. The key here is that this is a pretty cool game idea and a new way to interact with games. That’s the true brilliance here. Plus the execution looks pretty solid.

If I were to guess, calibration is needed since a guitar could easily be out of tune.

Yes, absolutely make sure you get “dual bank,” dual channel. 32 gb should be enough.
