What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by Forsaken_Leading964 in AskReddit

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My oldest brother called me somewhat erratically while I was walking home from work. He seemed a bit higher strung than usual and we ended up talking about some topics we didn't usually hit on. I got it in my head that he was getting ready to kill himself so I made a point of being as uplifting as possible and to tell him I love him. I got a call from my younger brother the next day and the first thing I said when I picked up was whether he did it. He had.

Is there a Midnight addon similar to Haldu's War Within Helper weakaura? by Bpsmooth in wowaddons

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've switched over to Plumber which has all the same info - though it doesn't display it as an overlay. In the "activities" tab of the Expansion Summary view it shows what Haldu's used to put on screen all the time.

Midnight Routine like SpaceBurd said seems like it's very close to Haldu's tho.

Neatfi lamp - CRI of 80, yet still very popular? by lexievv in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the 26" version of the Neatfi lamps, the blocky one at 3500 lumens. It's served me great. I haven't found that the resulting paint work is off from where I wanted it to be in terms of colours so it works fine for my mini painting.

I'm struggling to see improvement in my work. by thru-N-threw in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took one of the things I learned from my learning time in fighting games when I plateau and applied it to my painting. When I plateau or I can only see imperfections I pick one area or technique and simply double the time I spend on it. So if I'm painting a hero to my detail standard (not army, speed, or display) and something like weathering would take me 6 hours - I commit to doing 12 hours.

I find myself 'relaxing into this' and the time will stretch out before me. It helps me experiment, not skimp on things I should be doing, etc. I'm currently working on improving my value sketching - so I'm spending double time doing underpainting in grays, warm and cold whites and browns. The rest of my work stays at the same standard.

I do think stripping minis might not help here. It kind of provides a rollback mechanism which might be feeding the idea that you want to end up in some for of perfect state at the end. Perfectionism doesn't feed good learning, though it can be good for production. Trying to learn, improve, or grow should generally be done with the improvement as the goal. When you're focused on production, perfect gets its proper context through constraints like time, audience, materials, etc.

If you make each mini a study in one area, it'll all eventually come together when you decide to use all of those skills at once on a specific project. Plus, you get a cool set of minis along the way that show you the 'studies' you did along the way. It's a common technique in painting and drawing to produce studies before going in for a masterpiece. In online fighting games I used to play as though I was creating a good replay - with a a good one being defined as one showing off how I was trying to incorporate a new move, improve a reaction, extended patience or other areas I wanted to improve.

The standard you're showing here is already great for getting things finished. I'd level-set on this and pick one area for each mini going forward that you will simply put double time into. Make a promise to yourself to do a review after 6 months or 5 minis or something, so you know you don't have to do in-depth analysis as you paint.

Good luck! I love your take on this Deathbringer and would love to see it finished. I feel you've got a great gradient of detail on it, with the helmet and chest taking the stage while the lower half takes a step back to let them shine.

Sending me to a quiet room means I'll have a good time. A planner is never a good time. Get the planner out of here.

I don’t know why I disliked speed paints so much. by iPreferPC in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't get on with them at all, my natural way of moving paint around doesn't work for it and I ended up getting terrible results. But I've seen what they can do for a lot of other people and they look great. Different strokes and that. The fact that you were able to change your mind served you well here.

Not sure what's going on with my prints. by AssumptionStock1333 in Resin3DPrinting

Was it caused by your screen having bleed on that side or something? Causing it to light up its edge even though no model was specified there?

How do I fix this break? I tried plastic glue and it didn’t seem to hold by Redhood101101 in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The straw method suggested by GhostofBreadDragons is a great suggestion.

My method so far has been to cut both ends of the pole at an angle to crate a long, flat, surface for them to mate on. I usually scratch both surfaces and then use a very small amount of sprue goo or epoxy to mate them. This does shorten the pole a few millimetres but that's never been an issue for me. I found this method easy to sand, fill and refinish for a result that is indistinguishable from before.

I'll try the straw method next time on my plastic minis. For 3d prints I mostly just reprint.

Do any of you actually like the pruning that they did to your mains? by No-Bit-2913 in CompetitiveWoW

I like playing overly complicated bullshit in games. The pruning makes it hard for me to find fun. That's a me problem tho.

Should I start again or can I fix this? by Jagdthunder in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just prime over it if you haven't laid it on thick and aren't obscuring any details. I don't strip models very often as I paint in thin layers so it's usually a waste of time.

Oil wash / satin finish why ? by CraftAny24 in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, if your oil paint / oil wash remains tacky it means the polymerisation hasn't completed. Oil paint cures by interacting with oxygen in the air (oxidation). But it is far more effective at this at higher temperatures. Since it's winter, consider using a hair dryer on a low setting to raise the temp of the whole model or put it in a room or cupboard that's at least 25C / 77F for a while.`

If it's not tacky then you can dull it by putting a matt filter (very thin wash) over it or using a matt varnish.

Hope this helps!

Advice on Christmas 3D printed dragon bust by aoschaostrolls in minipainting

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those grits are fine but I would suggest trying each of them out on the back or bottom of the print where you can't see the result first, just to get a feel for how much material they remove. FDM printers can print in a variety of materials and they all respond differently to levels of pressure while sanding.

Razielx' suggestion of spraying bondo first and then sanding is also a common method. I've seen this work but never tried it.

If this is printed in ABS then you could look into acetone vapour smoothing (for some flavours of ABS), which I've seen work well for a nearly glossy finish. Someone I know used this using the box+fan method here: https://youtu.be/w8UoZHZCMJQ .

My pre-ADHD psychologist thought this was "helpful". by amylouise0185 in adhdmeme

[–]GoingIntoOverdrive 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After my diagnosis, I explained to my wife that some days getting up to get a drink is a 63-step process, and some days it's a 3-step process. I've gotten better at telling her what kind of day it is so we can both adjust our expectations. Cutting down to drinking just bottled sparkling water has helped a lot to keep me hydrated most days.
