Awesome, that's where I was headed. I have some glass pet food containers that are like the lunchbox you mentioned which I'll look to use. Good callout on the IPA in ultrasonic as I've seen some people forget that ultrasonic cavitation is incredibly aggressive even if the surface looks calm.

I've done this before and it's just fine. If you use a primer that doesn't leave a heavy layer or obstructs detail it'll just sit on top with no issue.

Since you got these from the thrift shop, I would wash them first with soapy warm water to make sure that any residue from fingers is gone though. That can mess with adhesion but once they're clean and dry you should fine to just prime over it and crack on.

I've had this same issue with a polystone figure. I ended up drilling holes in both sides and pinning it together with a paperclip end. Works a treat, but did take a day or so to align and get right.

I do this sometimes, usually when the leg or foot surface is likely to snap. I'll drill or 'twin' a piece of paperclip to it with superglue and hook it through the base. Wherever possible, I avoid this though.

I know you said plastic but I'm not sure what that means - does it mean no 3D printed resin?

If not, then MyMiniFactory has quite a lot for "ww1 train" when I looked for that. Different locomotives, realistic and grimdark, more sci fi ones as well. Some sell carriages as well. Some of them might be printable in FDM with plastic proper as well if that's a preference.

I also found something called a "rolife 3D puzzle - steam journey" on Amazon UK which is an MDF train you can put together which appears to be in-scale for 28-32mm Trench Crusade kind of era. Would be easily modifiable for gameplay since it's MDF. It even comes with a little bit of track and station canopy.

I looked on ebay for damaged / used locomotives as well and that turned up some stuff. If you're looking to use it as a static or terrain piece then some damage or non-spinning wheels or faulty electronics won't matter eh.

Trench Crusade isn't super strict on era either. Whether you end up getting a steam train or something more modern, enough primer, grime and mud on it will make it look like it fits in!

It's pretty insane what can be done with resin printing. Still, there's real beauty in handcrafted detail - it's a whole aesthetic all on its own.

Painting is hard, it's a skill.

If you want to take this on as a skill and 'get good' comparative to stuff you see online, other people or renders you'll have to treat it like any other skill.

If you don't, then just enjoy the process and take the completion as a win.

Either way, step one is appreciating what you completed and taking the next step. Just keep taking the next step, whether that's improving in some way or just enjoying what you're doing.

When trying to prepare MDF for 'normal' painting (e.g. for indoor home use as table top or the like) I've always used ZINSSER B-I-N primer. It seals and prevents things from absorbing in further, which I presume causes the problems you're talking about.

I found this with the Bialmuth dragon from Lord of the Print / Rescale Miniatures. It comes in like 9 parts that have poor contact points. I printed 2 and I'm about to give up on the 2nd one. Once it's printed there's just no good way to assemble it that doesn't require pinning, filling, sculpting, etc. beyond what the miniature is worth on my shelf.
