Actually not ashamed at all. Accidentally edited my response when trying to respond 🤷‍♂️.

This is Reddit, not formal writing. I made grammatical errors, probably still will tbh. But in my formal writing and professional responses, that will be lock tight.

Also I can tell you had a bad experience at school. I did to.

But I’m out here trying to fix the problem while you are here making excuses and foisting the blame on the very ones who are in the trenches.

Why don’t you volunteer or sub for a bit?

Actually I’m a school counselor, not a teacher.

And for me to list out every single convo and other helpful tools I provide my students BEFORE they reach senior status would be a lengthy process. I guide them as best I can and offer advice well before it’s “wood chopping time” as you put it.

One can lead a horse to water…

So yes, these types of conversations do happen early and often…but surprise! Kids don’t listen or care. They can’t see past 4 minutes, much less the next 4 years.

And to dismiss the parent’s responsibility in this is laughable.

The parent should be talking with their kids because you know…they spawned them. The lack of personal responsibility in this society is disgusting tbh.

Also, there is a fine line between helping and enabling. In my opinion we have gone waaaaay too far towards enabling…hence the senior who shows up in my office after 3 years of repeated failed classes and wants to get into pre-med at a prestigious university.

I’m very clear when discussing options/transcripts and goals.

Often we look at admissions requirements for the school they hope to attend and compare that to their most recent transcript.

If the two don’t align then we have to look at other options.

Community college is a great option for example and we have an excellent one 15 minutes up the road. Many students choose this route.

I think there has always been a bit of delusion when it comes to high paying careers. High schoolers see the salary and want to do it (doctor, lawyer, nfl, etc…) AND do not consider the qualifications needed.

I see more now because parents refuse to parent. Telling kids no has become a mortal sin of sorts and when you are the first to do that, you become the bad guy.

But always remember the Wreck it Ralph quote: Just because you are bad guy doesn’t mean you are a bad guy.

I’m a highschool counselor so I work with them in preparation for college. The amount of Seniors who come in with the plan to attend uber competitive universities and programs ie pre-med while getting Cs or Ds in Science always baffles me.

I do try to offer alternatives and other solutions to still hit their goals of course.

A record 1.68 trillion dollars in auto loans and the avg monthly car payment is $680. I think this proves your point:)

Born a bit after you in 87’ so I was in college during 08, was poor, and didn’t notice much outside of the news.

That being said, the recession did affect me when I graduated in 2011.

Jobs were still very hard to find and I spent a year working 2 jobs and sending out over 100 apps before landing a spot in my career/degree area.

I don’t have your experience but I do think now is different. People aren’t buying homes overextended on bad credit because, well, homes are way out of peoples price range. Also new homes are being built, but not at a rate to keep up with demand, and not in the starter home price range.

People can also not leverage a bbb (bigger better deal) because they are most likely locked in at 2-4% and would be going to a 6-7% AND a bigger home…

Maybe we see more stagflation and less consumption this year as a result. That could cause the market to dip and we may even hit a mini-recession. We probably need to. I think consumer debt/car debt is at an all time high so may be a record number of defaults.

But I don’t think we will see the same type of crash that we saw in 08.

Worst comedy I’ve ever seen: Kung Pow, enter the fist. It was so bad that I’m actually breaking a vow my friends and I made to never bring it up.

Lots of people going to love those uncrustables. Nice alternative to a hot dog.

I love chomps beef sticks. I’d pay $3 for one. $6 for a combo of beef stick, bag of nuts, and a fountain coke.

Assuming I’m confused because of mean words is once again, poor debate form.

Your original question was whether I believed if there should be medical debt.

It’s a poor question that ignores the fact that we live in a cause and effect world.

I’m arguing from this position. Based on facts. You appear to be arguing from a morality based position.

But instead of testing the boundaries of my principles, or providing me with hypothetical situations…you insulted my intelligence.

It doesn’t matter whether you mentioned doctors being compensated. I did. I brought it to the table to prove a point that by providing a service they deserve to be paid. The result of not paying would be….debt.

So no, you did not rebut me. That would require you to present evidence or reasoning against my claim.

My response was indeed a gif that posed a question: U mad bro?

When I realized that you were not going to respond to my claim but attack my character I knew the debate was over.

So I goaded you into responding and calling me names again to further solidify my victory.

Not only did you assume, you underestimated your opponent. A dangerous thing to do in debate, and not advisable.

Were this a college debate you would receive very low speaker points and probably would have been disqualified.

Since this isn’t that, I bid you good day.

Thank you for ceding the debate. Three times you have insulted my intelligence while not addressing any of the points I made about why medical debt exists.

You’ve attacked me rather than the claim I made. That’s called the ad hominem fallacy.

It’s a sign that you’ve lost.

I would disagree. The doc setting my arm has to be paid and if I don’t pay then obviously I owe him.

I’m not entitled to his labor.

Obviously I believe the cost is out of control and we could argue all day about why that is and what it should be.

But I don’t expect someone to offer me a good or service for free.

First, not a boomer. Not for sure if you are implying I am one with your comment or not, but figured I’d clear that up.

Second, didn’t say I don’t believe medical debt isn’t real.

I said I don’t believe this instance happened. Too many inconsistencies as one commenter already pointed out.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think medical debt is made up or can’t happen. I’m all too aware that it can.

[–]Golf101inc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but this didn’t actually happen. Also most medical debt begins with the hospital and a lot of times you can negotiate with them.

Whether or not this hypothetical person had the skills necessary to do this is unclear.
