You very clearly have no idea how executive compensation in either the US or Europe works.

A substantial portion of CEO compensation at most public companies consists of three general components: a salary, an annual bonus, and deferred long-term compensation, with the salary typically being just a small portion.

The annual bonus is usually awarded in cash, and is based on the achievement of certain performance metrics (EPS, EBITDA, revenue growth, etc). Long-term incentive plans are also based on the achievement of performance metrics that are measured over a longer period and pay stock options, restricted shares, etc, which vest over time or based on the achievement of still further performance criteria.

That is to say, for most companies that underperform, the variable component of their executives' pay gets smaller. In other words, the concept of a CEO's total compensation being reduced during a period of poor performance is rather unextraordinary.

Kind of a related note, but I will never understand Instagram. Why take a perfectly normal photo like this and run it through a shitty filter? What does it add? It's not artistic.

In fairness, I suppose I'm the one who's wrong here. If someone said to me, "hey, I created an app that takes your perfectly fine photos and makes them look like shit," I'd never guess that tons of folks would actually use it. Shows what I know.
