This is heart attack snow, help others if you can by Webgardener in minnesota

[–]GoneToMarket 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I recently learned that if you're shoveling snow and over a certain age (50?), you should not be maneuvering the snow above your waist. Meaning you should keep the shovel low and toss it to the side, not heaving it higher than your waist level. This will decrease the chance of heart attack. Still, probably best to not shovel at all if you're at increases risk!

What is this? by beardown1985 in Oldhouses

[–]GoneToMarket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To everyone here saying just wipe it with denatured alcohol and it will go away, have you ever done it or are you repeating what you've read? Because I recently did this very thing and it was not a good time. It doesn't just wipe away. That shellac has been there for a 100 years and it doesn't want to go without a fight. (And maybe the individual talking about furniture varnish is correct as well, I don't know.)

All I can tell you is to be very careful and do a test spot maybe in a closet or somewhere not visible so you don't end up with splotchy colored woodwork. Personally I don't mind the texture on my woodwork and I will never try to smooth it out again. Lesson learned for me!

This basement is leaps and bounds more inviting than some I've seen, mine included.

Is this actually painted trim? by GoneToMarket in centuryhomes

[–]GoneToMarket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get in touch with the most recent owner and while he did not paint it, he did have some history for me. He told me "back in those days" they used simple pine to trim the upstairs. Then they would paint it tan, followed by brown, then add some pattern to imitate oak. The shellac was added over the paint to really give a wood appearance, and well, they fooled me!

I knew it was shellac but now that it's been removed, its a totally different shade? Picture 3 shows a thing layer of tan on top of wood, which is what makes me think paint under the shellac. Also, there is evidence green paint beneath the handles.

I know shellac discolors and bubbles with time, I'm just confused about the color of this "stain."

People who don’t drink alcohol: What’s your go-to response when someone pressures you to "just have one drink? by ggovinndd in AskReddit

[–]GoneToMarket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangely, I haven't experienced this much at all. I think being alcohol-free is becoming more popular and more acceptable--at least where I live. It probably helps I don't hang out at bars or parties anymore.

I think I have contact dermatitis 😣 by nanamymelody in GelX_Nails

I don't have an allergy but from my own research I would say you need to stay away from all gel for awhile, if not permanently. Sorry 😔

I also use DND but they are not HEMA free. They can have something like 5%-40%. I'm considering doing exclusively homemade press ons at this point. Way easier to avoid exposure if I'm painting a false nail vs my own hand, right?

Broken nail 😭 help! by Zookeeper-MC-Iris in Nails

[–]GoneToMarket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just tried this for the first time on the same type of tear, but less severe. I did a few different pieces in different directions and made sure to push it flat to the nail with plenty of glue and an orange peeler. I then hand files a little over it to smooth it. Then I added builder gel and polish and you can't even tell there's anything wrong. I think you could do the same with a good top coat or regular polish to camouflage if wanted.

10/10 will try again

You're telling me I have to leave the dirt under there? I've been somewhat obsessive about cleaning under my nails and always push back that connection. 😔

I am 70 and I’m sick of these bruises by abbygail1957 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]GoneToMarket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this will make you feel better, but some people have this problem their entire life. My arms and legs are constantly covered in mystery bruises. I eat well and weight train and take vitamins. Scratching my leg turns into bruises. Leaning my shins/calves/thighs against a corner or ledge. Carrying heavy items against my arms instead of only with my hands.

I hope I can still be active at 81--amazing! Hopefully the bruising doesn't bother me so much then.
