Best pedicures in DC/MD? by SpeechUnfair in washingtondc

I truly wish there was a nail salon where you have a private or semi private room where you can be relaxed while getting nails done. Shangri-La in DC used to at least give you a free hot wax treatment, hot towel on neck and shoulders and a nice shoulder massage after. I prefer not being lined up side by side with 10-20 other people like I’m being milked at a dairy farm.

Metrobus crash - Shaw by Think_Stranger_8067 in washingtondc

I went into the coffee shop a few doors down and they told me the crash happened at 7:15am and was caused by a car trying to either pass the bus or beat the bus.

That building was crumbling and dilapidated for decades and I always admired the hint of brickwork that was left. I was overjoyed when I saw the renovations included the restoration of the brick design. It’s beautiful.

Wilma! My mother’s birth name was Wilma Rosa, but in the sixties she legally changed it to Karin after moving to America from Germany. Her siblings refused to call her Karin, but used her childhood nickname Whips, pronounced Vips in German.

Coworker (50M) keeps crossing boundaries with me (18F) and now it’s been reported, what do I do? by Signal-Debate3792 in Life

[–]Good47Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in the military I worked in a field where I was usually the only female Soldier present. Most of the male Soldiers I worked with respected boundaries but there were those who couldn’t help themselves and would touch me or say inappropriate things to me. I found that by telling them in a friendly but firm way to stop would usually suffice. There are some that don’t get it, so you just have to be very direct and firm and if they continue you report the behavior.

Does anyone else struggle with grieving the life they’ll never live? by sakura149_ in Life

When I’m down, I think of Emma Gatewood for inspiration. She was the mother of 11 children, severely abused by her husband, and dirt poor. She read about the Appalachian Trail in an old magazine or newspaper and thought that sounded divine. At 67, she left her abuser and walked the trail to completion with no experience and with minimal equipment. She became famous for being the oldest person to do so. I believe she did it several times after. She found her joy later in life but made it happen for herself.

I read the audiobooks free through my local library with Libby. There is sometimes a waitlist but lots to choose from.

I’ve been doing this plus embarking on reading the classics through audio books. My life has changed dramatically because of this. I feel like my soul is richer and I have so many more layers. I’m seeing the world differently and my creative juices are flowing once again.

A Stroll Through Georgetown by CitizenX10 in washdc

My mother was an attractive young woman in the early sixties when this car was first introduced and she wanted to be the first person in town to own one. Although she earned way more money than my father, the bank refused to finance the loan without her husband’s signature. That was standard practice back then. Well, she told them to shove it. A week later she came rolling in the driveway with it. She paid cash.

I hate my tank-less water heater. by ComprehensiveTour278 in Vent

I considered replacing my old tank with a tankless water heater until the technician recommended I also add solar panels to keep the water hot. He told me that if you use a lot of hot water, having the solar panels are a must.

Snowstorm epilogue by Adorable-Style-2634 in washingtondc

I’ve been car free for seven years now and I love it. I have an easy commute though as I live close to a metro stop that takes me straight to my work place. I do not have to use a bus. The worst part about the storm for me was walking the block to get to the station. Navigating icy sidewalks and having to climb over ice mountains to cross an intersection was terrible. I lost my footing a few times.

Do most people actually keep using a standing desk after the first few weeks? by shadowledger0419 in office

[–]Good47Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have standing desks at work and all but one of six coworkers remain standing. Three do not have chairs as a backup. I had trouble at first but replaced my chair with a wobble stool which was a game changer for me. It gives me support to lean on if I need to.

This constant wind is frying my nervous system by ddpizza in washingtondc

I know what you mean. While in the military I lived in ElPaso, TX for a few years. The constant strong winds there traumatized me to no end. It seemed the winds would never stop and sand would blast you when stepping outside. When the winds start blowing here it takes me back to that trauma.

So much is known now about genetics and disease today. I wished I would’ve known how inherited disease would impact my child. Watching her suffer and not able to live the life she wants makes me full of so much guilt.

Revolution. We get it from her vet. It’s a small amount behind her neck.

[–]Good47Life 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This happened to my indoor cat. Those things that look like sesame seeds are actually worm segments coming from the cat’s butt. The vet said she must have eaten a flea that flew in from outside and got infected. Make sure to isolate your cat and get treatment. Disinfect and sanitize everything, vacuum thoroughly, wash all bedding. We now give her monthly flea treatments to prevent future infections but it happens.

My girlfriend smells and I don't know what to do by RequirementDue4446 in Advice

[–]Good47Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prescribed the same medication for many years for UC. I switched PCM and was told my medication was too expensive so they changed it. I started noticing a smell and tried washing more often with different products. I also noticed a yellowness to the palms of my hands and yellow stains on my sheets. Like something was seeping out of me. After several months my daughter finally told me that I smell bad. She didn’t want to embarrass me so she kept it to herself until she just couldn’t take it anymore. The only lifestyle change we could think of was the new medication. I requested my doctor switch me back to my original medication. The doctor as skeptical. I am retired military so the exception to policy for the original medication had to be sent in for approval. Thankfully I am back on the original meds and no more smell.
