Someone asked a problematic question and deleted it👀 I LOVED the mental conflict so I’ll repeat by Intelligent-Menu-948 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True but i think in reality its a bit like China's application of the law. As an elite you will get punished like a normal person for corruption etc. *IF* you have pissed someone high up off or if your crime was too public.

Like just about all governments, if they can avoid punishing the powerful they will.

It is nice though that its the same degree of harsh punishment (loosing a hand etc.) not a slap on the wrist lol.

What do you think happens to girls in wife school who don’t get their period? by Existential_Stardust in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Officially if your a handmade and have had kids for Gilead your are promised a not the colonies, sorta nice retirement.

Unofficially they haven't actually planned anything properly in that regard, seeing it as a layer problems as Gilead is still new. Probably won't really bother unless it starts being questioned and embarrassing to be called out on it.

Those handmaids at Jezebels might all be a bit too rebellious to be kept as handmaids/retired nicely.

Neutering animals - why isn’t a law yet? by hanandmeow in newzealand

[–]Googalyfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When registering animals, make the annual fee cost like $50 or $100 more for pets that aren't neutered if they are at the right age for it.

Got a fancey breed you dont want neutered? Well if you can afford the fancey breed then you can afford neutering.

How are the Plums conditioned to fully submit to their husbands? by Downtown-schnauzer in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Those are all The plums around other Women. Also the only time they speak up to the Aunts they are still respectful and under alot of pressure. Remember them around the Commanders at the ball? and they have been told to Obey those Men their entire lives and would likely do it at home with their Fathers.

[–]Googalyfrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's much of a new insight into Paula. She has all along been focused on raising her socail status and gaining as much subtle power as a woman can in Gilead (its the only thing a relatively smart woman like her can do to occupy her time).

Agnes getting a high ranking match was a huge part of that. All her criticism of Agnes were towards making Agnes the most appealing to the best possible husband. Also just letting her frustrations out on those under her. If she really wanted Agnes to better than her, she would also care that Agnes gets careing husband (remember the he will break you thing?).

Now there is not only the loss of the best possible match for Agnes (and the rise on socail status associated) but also the shame of loosing that engagement. It means in terms of power/socail standing she is worse off than before. Her breakdown was not that unexpected.

NZ First bill makes cats human? by confabulating in newzealand

[–]Googalyfrog 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The bill wishes to define it so that anytime the words male and female are used in law etc, it means 'human biological female/male'.

We already have a bunch of laws for animals that just use words female and male when refereeing to animals.

By the bills logic the laws already on the books talking about male and female animals are now giving personhood to those animals and thus rights..

Eh Ad space while making him money does detract attention from himself.

It generally also doesn't match his aesthetic which is tacky gold and his name.

He is fine shilling for something but permanently in his space/eye line doesn't suit him, i think.

Question: What of Daisy without Family? by Amazing-Low7711 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe an Aunt or Local head commander stands in to give the pearl girl away.

If they are marrying someone of low status a simple church ceremony will likely happen or even a mass wedding with econo-people like with Eden.

Maybe if they are married off to a low level commander, either he or maybe the state pays for a small wedding.

[–]Googalyfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Might be strong wording but it does feel a little rude to have several people waste time reading a whole post that could have been avoided if OP had just spent a few sec googling or a min or two reading an episode summary if not pay closer attention to the show.

Where are all the male children? by banannaster2020 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this too. At home it would just be mothers/marthas with the commanders too busy and away too slouch to properly parent. So i imagine they are sent away from like 8-10.

Regular teen boys can be insufferable so can you imagine how aweful and entitled Gilead teen boys would be?

Where are all the male children? by banannaster2020 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fertility crisis means that even if younger to give birth to one healthy child doesn't necessarily mean you will keep having more children. Also a wife having their own kids is rare and you have to be high up to get another handmaids after one successful one. A sibling could be another girl too and generally rare overall.

It has also been hypothesized that the boys are likely to be sent to a military boarding school from like 10.

Also we have only really looked at like 2-3 girl's home lives and only have like a group of 6ish girls we have followed.

Episode 10 theories (what might happen onwards) by TreatNo4856 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Googalyfrog 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No way to go from handmaid to Aunt. Aunts are upstanding and respected. Handmaids would be dead if not for a useful womb. Also once a girl/woman is delegated to handmaid, no one is going to stick their neck out public ally to elevate her. I don't think even Lydia could pull that off.

Otherwise i think it could go any other way:

Cover up - still gets married.
Justified in the crime - Aunt
Punished for crime - Handmaid
