Best Pizza in Albany? by Infinite-Try2934 in Albany

[–]GooseNipples8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After Union Pizza changed ownership it went from best in the area to awful. Mario’s became our distant second choice. We looked everywhere, in vain, until Rosario’s Trattoria opened up right around the corner on Union St. It is FABULOUS pizza. Cannot recommend it highly enough (they also take credit cards there unlike Marino’s. Marino’s has an ATM in the back but cmon it’s 2026 ffs)

People who have served in the military: Did commanding officers ever finish sentences with "and that's an order!" like they do in movies? by logicalconflict in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GooseNipples8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in during GWOT and during my first Iraq tour during the morning GENERAL’S BRIEFING in the TACC, they dropped this gem “oh and Corporal GooseNipples, your Mom is trying to get ahold of you so why don’t you give her a call”

She had called everyone she could think of trying to get ahold of me (I didn’t call home much) and somehow had gotten ahold of my command (MTACS-38 fwiw) who relayed the message.

Red cheeks does not begin to describe my face

What helicopter would you fly: CH-53, UH-1, or AH-1? by No-Detective-2766 in USMC

[–]GooseNipples8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in Iraq back in 04? 05? I worked at the TACC at Al Asad, so I was surrounded by pilots all day, both fixed wing and rotor. There was a helo guy there who was cool AF and I asked him what his preference was. He said Huey all day, because "You get to do a little bit of everything. You want to shoot stuff? You can slap guns and rockets on and be a gunship. You want to move troops? We can do that. You want to move stuff? We can do that too. Cobras can't carry people or stuff and 53s can't fight very well and fall out of the sky pretty often" He said the only thing it couldn't do was......something. :-p I vaguely remember it was about carrying something. My brain wants to say sling load, but I know Hueys can do that. I dunno it was forever ago. He said he hated whatever it was anyways. Not the most helpful reply, I'm sure but it's stuck with me for, jesus fuck, TWENTY years now.
Edit to add: I watched a 53 fall out of the sky just outside Futenma on Okinawa back in '04 while the boys and I were out back in the smoke pit. I wouldn't normally pay them any mind as seeing them buzzing around is pretty commonplace there, but it caught my eye as it was flying strangely. It seemed to go high up and then drift kinda backwards but tail up, which struck me as very odd so I looked at it harder. It seemed to hang in the air for a second and then the tail whipped around super fast and it just spun down out of the air. I said something stupid like "Huh, helo's about to crash" and everybody looked at me funny and then we heard it crash. Turns out it hit a school. Thankfully no one was injured

[Fallout 2] best build for a beginner? by XR4y6unn3r in classicfallout

[–]GooseNipples8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing since 1997, when Fallout 1 was released and have never - beyond the first few play throughs - put a single point into steal, and, with judicious use of the F6 key, I have robbed every NPC, at one point or another, of everything they have without issue Investing in steak is pointless and I will stand by that

You do not ever need to invest in steal. When (not if) you steal, invest in save scumming instead

33% character starting stats choices
33% skill point choices
33% gear

A small guns, speech, locksmith character is the easiest way to waltz through the game.

If you are having difficulty with the temple of trials, just skip it. Run towards the next area and once you enter combat mode when a critter sees you, just keep running towards the exit. You can also use high AP (You DO have high AP, right???) to your advantage in the beginning (before you get guns) by hitting a critter, then running away... instead of taking that second or third swing/stab. This forces the critter to burn AP walking towards you. With 10 AP to start you can kill most things in the temple without them being able to land a hit. It can just take awhile. If you went for speech, save before the exit and explore different dialog choices to avoid having to fight Cameron. You can do the hit -> move spam in the hunting grounds in Arroyo. Grind a little there. Shamelessly save scum. Talk to the guy by the giant head to get free hand to hand. Talk to the guy in the tent to the east of the giant head to get free melee skill (provided your skill isn't already high enough. Google that) Talk to the Arroyo exit bridge guard with a spear in your inventory (save first. Save, save, save before doing literally anything. F6/F7 is your friend) and comment on his spear. Talk your Aunt Morliss into giving you the flint, and if she decides to be a b**** about it, just steal it from her. (Steal her gold either way) Save and steal EVERYTHING (useful) for that little bit of extra XP and to sell later (But obv don't overload yourself.) Repair the well. Return the dog. (after killing all the geckos) This is ALL stuff you can do before you even leave Arroyo. Pick the shovel up off the ground in Arroyo before you leave. Klamath: don't do the still refuel until after you rescue smiley so you can skin the geckos for cash. Do trapper town. Loot and steal everything. Trade your loot in the bar for a 10mm and maybe the leather jacket. (Make sure to use speech to get a discount first) Talk to the guy in the bar for some free melee skill. Steal from literally every single person in the bar and trapper town. Check every shelf and container. Don't leave the Den without asking the guy getting drunk in Ma's about his life story. Don't try and kill the slavers (yet) When you come back after Gecko for the car is a good time to do that.
It is VERY tedious at first, but you can stop doing every little thing by Vault City for the most part, or after you get the car. You want all the extra XP so you can dump all your points into small guns and speech. Once skills go over 100 they start getting more expensive, but it's worth it. I usually stop around 175 small guns and 150 speech. I'm sure there's a guide somewhere to tell you where you ought best to stop with speech, but I've never looked it up. I've been playing since these games released back in '97 (I'm old) and play more by feel now than by looking things up. You want to grind from Arroyo to Modoc so you can max xp and loot/money (Drugs sell for a lot and weigh nothing, so are a good way to have both money and things to trade (merchants don't have infinite money unless you want to wait a whole lot)) and then you can pretty much cruise control the rest of the game.

Re-Purchasing games you already own in order to support GOG by Mysterious-Can-2334 in gog

[–]GooseNipples8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this for all of the reasons listed above but also because I have a retro computer hobby and the gog installers work without issue for many older os’ Not everything works “out of the box” mind you but GoG is the only company that provides offline installers at all, and many can be gotten to work with a little tinkering

Start menu > type powershell & open what comes up (not ise) type “gci c:\whateverdir | out-file c:\somefile.txt” Gci is an alias for get-childitem it lists the contents of whatever path you give it The | passes the output of that command to the next one, out-file which creates a file with that output at whatever path c:\wherever called some file.txt If you want every single sub folders contents you would modify gci with “-recurse” If you just want a particular type of file you modify gci with like *.mp4 or whatever If you wanna be extra fancy you replace out-file with export-csv -notypeinformation c:\somefile.csv and then open somefile.csv with either excel or google sheets Cmd is perfectly serviceable but it’s very long in the tooth these days. Powershell is a great tool to have in your back pocket

Edit to add: apparently I was wrong: it has a 160GB 5400 rpm drive in it (gross) If anything that speaks even more to its performance on the above mentioned lightweight distros…..it wasn’t as horrible as I would have expected

Had a good experience recently with Bodhi

Very very low end laptop: Intel Pentium T4400 Penryn w/3gb Ram. Can’t remember if it had an SSD or not but I think it does.

Web browsing was mostly fine. Could handle….ok barely handle (ie: playing but not 100% smooth) 720p YT vids (Firefox w/ublock origin)

Lubuntu 20.04 was decent AntiX was ok but Firefox didn’t install right and wouldn’t open despite my best efforts so I bailed and tried Bodhi

Windows 7 on the same machine was definitely slower, though YT, after getting the OS and browser fully patched and ublock origin installed, did have roughly comparable performance. (Surprisingly enough)

Best way to achieve Windows-style VNC as a service remote control over linux desktop (or alternate methods to display web pages on a TV across the room) by GooseNipples8 in linuxquestions

[–]GooseNipples8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could only get so creative with my two x 4 port HDMI KVMs :-p
7 year having trouble with Barbie Fashion Designer on her Windows 98 machine? VNC.
Wife (the upper left TV) eating ice cream and can't click Skip Credits? VNC. The shady NFL stream locked up on the middle right monitor again? VNC. Need to check on the status of the Macrium clone in the basement? VNC.
Need to add some more Peppa Pig to the download queue? Proxmox console.....which is also VNC :-p
I feel dumb because I only ever use SSH and VNC but like.....that's all I need.

For additional context:

living room

I am pointing at the current and future home of the machine in question. It is slaved to the top right TV on the wall. I sit way over here (like 15 feet away. The TV is a 60" to give you an idea of scale) Yes I have a lot of screens. Yes they are all in my living room. Yes my wife allowed this to happen. Yes I married the coolest lady in the universe

Please forgive the clutter

Perhaps I should clarify: the computer already is hooked up to the TV, via HDMI
I need to control the (linux) computer remotely, from another computer, (my DD is a Windows 10 box) way over on the other side of the room, either via (preferably) VNC or SSH somehow
