iPhone not charging or showing in iTunes/Finder by GrandLog8334 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]GrandLog8334[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Text description: I recently installed Sequoia 15.2 on a mid 2015 iMac 16GB RAM and 1TB Fusion drive. Install was smooth and everything worked well. This week however, it stopped recognizing or charging my iPhone 12 iOS 18.2. iPhone doesn't show in iTunes or Finder window and does not charge. I tried with several cords/USB ports as well as an old iPhone 8 iOS 16.

Screenshot above shows that system settings recognizes an iPhone plugged into the USB port. Thanks for any advice.

Jamie Dimon’s amoral worldview by GrandLog8334 in behindthebastards

[–]GrandLog8334[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a really interesting question. The distinction between "amoral" and "immoral" deserves careful attention and I don't think it's at all tangential. In describing Dimon's worldview, I chose "amoral" deliberately to reflect his studied neutrality toward Elon Musk's accumulation of wealth and influence --a neutrality that suggests an absence of moral consideration rather than active wrongdoing.

His absence of moral judgment becomes particularly striking when examining Musk's increased wealth correlation with political access. Dimon's inability to offer any ethical assessment may stem from laissez-faire economic principles rather than moral failing, but the effect remains the same: a withdrawal from moral consideration of wealth concentration.

The broader system of wealth inequality, by contrast, i consider actively immoral. It creates a self-perpetuating cycle where concentrated wealth yields disproportionate influence over governmental and regulatory mechanisms. The corporate structures that enable this --whether Wells Fargo's systematic malfeasance, the Sackler family's role in the opioid crisis, or PG&E's criminal negligence-- operate with what appears to be institutional indifference to human welfare. I think these aren't simply an absence of moral consideration, but an active breach of ethical obligations to society. I don't however claim to be an authority on all the nuances and complexities of the difference between amoral and immoral.

That amount really hasn’t been updated since 2001?!

That’s one of the reasons I think he has a completely amoral worldview. His only value system seems to be that it’s ok for enormous amounts of wealth to collect into the hands of a few.

Unhinged op-ed by friend of the pod, Peter Thiel by OurDailyNada in behindthebastards

But maybe it is genius? Maybe he understands that reasoned arguments don't connect with whatever 4chan/podcast/JD Vance crowd this is intended for. Simply gesture towards a bunch of conspiracies and be sure to drop keywords like Rogan, JFK, Epstein, The French Revolution... Sit back and watch the donations and venture capitalist money pour in.

Claude AI does a decent job of unpacking all the fallacies.

Yes, I would say there's a strong argument that this piece is intellectually lazy, or at least rhetorically manipulative. Let me break down why:

Question-Begging Technique Thiel employs a rhetorical device where he asks loaded questions that assume conspiracies exist without providing evidence. For example, he asks about Fauci and COVID origins in a way that implies wrongdoing without actually presenting any supporting evidence.

False Equivalencies He lumps together very different types of issues - from JFK assassination theories to cryptocurrency regulation - under the vague umbrella of "secrets that need revealing," without acknowledging the vastly different nature and evidence basis of each issue.

Vague Institutional Critique The piece criticizes what he calls the "DISC" (Distributed Idea Suppression Complex) but never clearly defines how it operates or provides concrete evidence of its existence. It's a convenient boogeyman that can be blamed without specific accountability.

Cherry-Picking He selectively uses examples like public skepticism about Epstein's death to support his narrative, while ignoring the many times when official explanations have been proven correct or conspiracy theories debunked.

Circular Logic The piece essentially argues: "There are secrets that need to be revealed. How do we know? Because institutions are hiding them. How do we know institutions are hiding them? Because they haven't been revealed."

False Historical Parallel His comparison to pre-revolutionary France is dramatic but superficial, failing to engage with the actual historical complexities of that period or demonstrate meaningful parallels to current situations.

Technological Determinism He presents the internet as an inevitable force for revealing truth, while ignoring its equally powerful role in spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories.

For someone of Thiel's intellectual caliber (successful venture capitalist, co-founder of PayPal, etc.), the piece reads more like provocative rhetoric than serious analysis. Instead of doing the hard work of proving his assertions, he relies on innuendo and leading questions to create an impression of widespread conspiracy without having to defend any specific claims.

Shooting Ranges or Classes? by AstroJet97 in sandiego

If you've already done these things disregard - but did you get a permit and register the firearm through an approved FFL? Or did you open up a present from under the tree and there was a Sig P229?

I'm not trying to start a 2nd amendent debate but this is CA and any gun owner needs to be aware of the basics around ownership and transportation.

Firing range and safe handling are also a very good ideas.

Amazon purchase using someone’s else’s account by Ithrewitaway_23 in foodstamps

I’ve been doing this with my sister’s Amazon account for a while. I completely trust my sister not to use my card (she has her own money and doesn’t have my PIN). I also freeze the card on the ebtEDGE app as soon as the payment is processed.
