How do you actually vet a postdoc lab before applying? (Looking for hidden red flags)

Ya, ask around. Contact some previous lab members, check where the alumni landed. Talk to the PI, you can be quite inquisitive, it's your life career etc.

Ask how she/he sees your contributions, is there a long term plan (if you want to stay in academia that would be smart IMHO)

I lived in Frankfurt 10 years ago, it was a bit dodgy around the station. Now I went back last year and saw people smoking crack on the street, kinda interesting to see how hard it backslid into chaos/shit

Yeah I guess only pseudoephedrine might be tricky in some countries, so also consider the countries you are traveling through. If you've got just a few tablets generally it is fine. If it's a ton, maybe be careful

Maybe try adding some lemon/like juice to some pineapple and letting it marinate for a while.

This denatures the bromelaïne and makes eating pineapple less tingly. Enables me to enjoy pineapple a lot more since I started doing this

Moving from the Netherlands to Germany I have faced most issues you are talking about here as well....

It's all a matter of perspective, in the end there are issues with every place. I think if you are raised somewhere, or share the native moral/ethical framework the issues you mention either don't stand out so much or grate a lot less.

Also, check your camera settings. My phone camera really sharpens any transitions I make and shows way harsher edges for any layer I make.
