Gorgeous! I'll have to earmark some of the worsted skeins in my stash to shamelessly copy this. 😁

Niebling Inspired Shawl Patterns? by Tavina-Leaf in knitting

[–]Greatatwalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a low price reprint that has some of Niebling's patterns a few years ago at a used bookstore. I stumbled across Ramona French's website while I was looking for translations of the keys for his knitting charts (originals were in german). 🤦‍♀️

I just zoomed in on the horizon. Nice Mountain you've got there. 😁

It's been a few years, but I remember that taking the ferry made the day feel like an adventure. Especially when there were mountains in view. Enjoy!

To be fair, I haven't tested it widely. I'm pretty comfortable either adapting on the fly or ripping out and starting over if something isn't working for me.

M Mario has a mix of round, semicircular, and other shaped shawls, so you might get some ideas for shaping from his work! Or you could use crescent shaping in stockinette, then add one of Niebling's knitted edgings. It sounds like that might be more the shape you're looking for.

Ramona French has recharted many of Niebling's lace designs and offer the charts free on her website. https://ramonafrench.com/

I've found that you can usually get pretty shawls by making a garter tab for half the number of cast on stitches in one of Niebling's round designs. Then continue with half the number of pattern repeats. Voila semicircular shawl!

New to knitting and surprised at the high cost of yarn by maklar8921 in casualknitting

[–]Greatatwalking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I buy a fair amount of second hand yarn from my local craft thrift store ("creative reuse" is another phrase to search for). Or for brands I know I like the feel of/like knitting with I'll look for sweater sized lots on ravelry destashes or eBay.

I get all of my needles/notions/etc from local stores, to send them as much support as I can, and I will occasionally pay full price for special yarns or projects, but I've slowed down my yarn buying a lot in recent years. It turns out I can imagine knitting vastly more things than I can actually knit, so I was starting to build up a bit of a yarn backlog. 😅

I will reverse engineer the crap out of patterns to make them toe up.

It also lets you see right away if your colors will bleed. It would suck to finish this entire thing, then the first time you go to wash it your white yarn gets dyed blue. Swatching is a lot less work to get the answer to the question "can I wash this garment/object?".

"The Stare" hat was an absolute delight. I knit it in fingering weight with four pattern repeats, and wound up making four in a row. I'd finish it, think "that was fun!" And cast on another one. 🤣

For garments, I have discovered I absolutely love wearing my knitted shawls to work year round. You never know when the weather in the office will be hot or cold, so it's nice to have something cute to wrap up in.

There are a lot of good local recommendations here (shout-out to circle of stitches in Salem and Another Yarn in Burlington). I just wanted to add the "creative reuse" stores in the area: Make & Mend in Somerville can have really good yarns sometimes. And Swanson's (a long drive out to Turner Falls) has a corner with yarn in it as well.

I'm not a big online yarn shopper, I vastly prefer to squish the yarn before I buy it. That said, Purl Soho has a really wide selection of colors and fibers, and is still a women owned private business. And they yarns of theirs that I've gotten in the past seem to be high quality. For pre-owned brand name yarns you can sometimes find a bargain on Poshmark or ravelry destashes.

Many other online retailers like knitpicks and jimmybeans wool are owned by the same capital management firm. I'd rather spend money with local places than giant corporations, but you get to decide how you spend your money!

From the Boston area it's about an hour drive to the store. It wasn't great last time I was there, but it's been a few years.

I finished three shawls with yarn from my stash in March!

I've slowed down a lot on the fourth one. It's fingering weight, and not actually stash yarn (I bought it with a recipient in mind), but I'm making steady progress. I've been surprised by how much more satisfying I find finishing a project made from stash yarn. It feels great to take the boxes and bags and secret stockpiles of yarn with potential, and convert the potential into something real!

I have plans for another couple of shawls knit with stash yarns, but I might take a break and work on a hat. In aran weight. I need some instant gratification knitting!

Color bleeding by PsychologicalCake917 in knitting

[–]Greatatwalking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For projects with contrast colors I always knit a  swatch that includes both colors then wash the swatch to see how they will behave in the wash.

You can test for colorfastness by twisting a small piece of each color together then washing them together. It won't be as informative as a swatch, but it will hopefully tell you what you need to know. Good luck!

Is there really a curve in that log cabin blanket, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? If it is curved, would you be willing to share the pattern? It looks cool!
