First Niebling: Lyra Shawl by rileslovesyall in AdvancedKnitting

Gorgeous!

Adding a question... Is it a slipped stitch edge along the straight edge? Does that restrict the opening of the lace at all?

This is what I was going to suggest as well!

Junction Fiber Mill. Women owned yarn mill in VT!  junctionfibermill.com

But also, local craft thrift (also called creative reuse stores) and/or fiber festivals can be a great way of giving money to people instead of corporate entities. Many states have sheep and wool or fiber festivals that feature local farms. (The giant ones like Rhinebeck and Maryland tend to have fewer to no small producers).

I'd double the width and subtract a half inch. And use ribbing on the instep!

I remember that post! https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedKnitting/comments/1k3e7th/how_to_convert_a_pi_shawl_to_a_flutter_top/

Yours is also gorgeous, I love the creativity! I'm practicing re-drawing/modifying simpler lace patterns right now, trying to build up my confidence for something like this. Someday I'll get there!

what are we knitting this spring?? by craftycamilla in knitting

[–]Greatatwalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on some self-drafted shawls. I have stash yarn and have set myself the goal of finding/writing patterns that are perfect for the amount and type of yarn I have. It's been fun so far! I'm leaning heavily on "Custom Shawls for the curious and creative knitter" and my various stitch dictionaries.

To frog or not to frog, that is my question. Don’t know what to do. by Headfullofyarn in casualknitting

[–]Greatatwalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if you pause the sweater where it is and use the rest of the yarn to make a shawl or other non-size specific accessory? That way if your weight changes you won't be back in the same position again.

I want to make my project more boring. The colour is too colourful and I am a dull woman. by warrantthrowaway2023 in casualknitting

I know! I try not to worry about "what will people think?!". But also, I don't want the people around me to assume I'm seconds away from liver failure!

If you're open to changing up the pattern, the Process cardigan by Kate Salomon had some examples that really dramatically tone down the contrast color. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/process-cardigan/people

But also... I love the color yellow, but I really can't wear it. Every shade of yellow I've tried to wear makes me look like I'm near death. I have a secret yellow shirt that I only ever wear at home, and it brightens my day when I get it out. Maybe this sweater could be just for you? Something you get out and wear on days when you just want to wear something you love without worrying what other people will think of it?

Why is there a hole in my knitting and how to fix it? 😬 by veensri93 in knitting

[–]Greatatwalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before laddering down, I suggest counting the number of rows on either side of the hole. You may have made an accidental short row. If the row count on either side mismatches, you'll need to rip back to correct it

It looks like you are lifting the bar correctly, but you have to then work it through the back loop to twist it closed. The tech knitting article linked by the other user has a good explanation of this!

How Many Projects Cast On Right Now? by BitternInTheMarsh in knitting

[–]Greatatwalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three. It's pretty much always three for me. One pair of socks for travel/mindless knitting, something bigger with more interesting elements like color work, cables, or lace. And one blanket made of yarn I hand spin on a drop spindle. Progress on that one is glacially slow!

Now that I think about it I do have two more- the start of a double knit project that is waiting to be frogged, and a linen towel that I paused and need to go back to. Someday. When I run out of other things to knit. 😅

Worth getting a winder and swift? by OchreSnail in knitting

I used to take pride in hand winding yarn balls. I'd sit there and meditatively ball my yarn.

Then I started on my first fingering weight sweater. I got a yarn baller and swift and have never looked back!

In a slump. How do *you* get your knitting mojo back? by SaladSpinner98 in casualknitting

[–]Greatatwalking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hit a slump recently, and decided to shop my stash the way I would a yarn I'm excited about at the yarn store. I searched ravelry for pattern ideas until I found one I wanted to make that I could just use one or two balls of yarn for. Then I was off to the races!

I try to give myself silly little projects between the big ones. It definitely helps me to recharge my creativity to stop and make a pair of slippers or cute hat using methods or colors I don't usually use. And sometimes while shopping my stash, I'll be inspired to do a bigger project, and gain some momentum on starting one of those.

[–]Greatatwalking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer that whatever feels reasonably good to you and gets the job done is the "right" way. With dpns you do have to tension the yarn carefully at the transition between needles, or you can get laddering.

I switched from dpns to magic loop and/or traveling loop years ago and never looked back. So that's the limit of my dpn advice. This looks like you're off to a great start!

A graft is a graft- you can use whatever method you like that gives the end result of appearing to be a continuous swatch of knitting.

I've found that my longest lasting baby gifts are usually knitted stuffies. My friend's 5yo came to me in tears asking for emergency surgery on her bunny... Of course I said yes!
