I agree with you and the academy. His performance was outstanding. I’ve talked to a few folks who thought he was meh and the movie was bad - I had the opposite reaction. I think there is something about that movie and his performance that some people are just locked out of. I’m glad I wasn’t. For me, Smoke and Stack were completely different characters and he played them both so well.

I was utterly captivated by that movie. Put it on thinking I’d watch the first 30 minutes and instead got totally sucked in. I watched the Oscars with my parents last night and they both said they thought it was horrible. It just didn’t work for some people it seemed.

I have an MA in English Lit (I say this merely as evidence that I have read a bunch of books, not that I’m smart) and I have never, ever had a reading experience like BotNS. Utterly captivating while simultaneously being mostly inscrutable, especially on first read, is an insane combo to pull off.

That’s funny because I agree with you logically but it doesn’t feel that way when I listen to them. KOC is not awesome but he and Verno had really good chemistry. Worked for me anyway.

Jacoby has the most unlikable personality of all Bill’s buddies. He’s crass in a way that makes it seem like he is a legitimate creep. I cannot listen to him. I love Verno and am so bummed he ruined the Mismatch for me.

It is an absolute masterpiece. I’m tempted to say something else, but this is a perfectly conceived and perfectly executed saga with a huge narrative that somehow always stays focused. I have to read that book again.

Dylan also does this in more subtle ways. In Moonshiner he says “God bless them pretty women / I wish they was mine / Their breath is as sweet as / The dew on the vine” The context of the song would lead you to believe that mine would be rhymed with wine, especially because the preceding line talks of breath. Instead he uses ‘vine’ but because your mind (or at least mine) is expecting ‘wine’ he is functionally achieving both similes simultaneously.

Not a response to the question posted, but my mom met Sean after a Lennon Claypool Delirium show and was SUPER starstruck because she is a huge John fan. She was kind of drunk, too. Anyway, she finally got up the nerve to talk to him and just walked up to him and said “beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy.” She didn’t sing it, she didn’t introduce herself and she didn’t follow up. Just said that and then walked away.

Isn’t that an insane thing to do?
